JonPotter
Well, last time I posted was on the old board, the layout thread (pics) at http://www.rmweb.co....php?f=9&t=49997 Since then work has come quite a long way! New stock, Dingham autocouplers and a fair load of scenery has put the layout as shown in the new pictures attached. The layout was booked for a show in April, but isn't anymore due to 3 double bookings at the show! The finishing touches are still required, paint on the bridge (which has been scratchbuilt since my last post) being the post prominent. The signal box has also been built from scratch since my last post. We have a whole load of kits to build - including a cattle dock and a small warehouse type building - and the area by the dock is still in need of quite a lot of work. A major change has been the complete ditching of the traverser to cassettes. This allows us to run using the space in the house and longer at shows. Typically the longest train will be the 4F+Van+2 Mk.1's, the loop only being long enough for 2 of the Mk. 1's. On the stock front, new purchaes include a Heljan Hymek, Pannier, and a whole load of wagons & kits - current kit projects include a 6-wheel tank, GW Container wagon and double bolster. Enjoy! JonPotter
In the last few days I have built up two more wagons - a container wagon an a Western Region open - and we have taken our first exhibition booking (for 2011)

RMweb Premium GW Jim Posted January 8, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 8, 2010 Hi. Layout looking good and almost finished, or is it the bits we can see!!! Wish mine was at this stage right now. Have modelled O gauge for a number of years, still trying to get some track down. Hand building the point ops sorry turnouts to 31,5mm which is fun!! However the use of Dingham auto couplers is of interest to me. Have you come across any issues fitting them and do you miss the look and joy of coupling up using 3 link. I have considered using the cassettes system, is it very difficult in use? Do you take the layout ???out??™ around the West Country? Regards James
JonPotter
Thanks for the replies The 2011 booking is for Amersham in Bucks, 16th April. I do miss 3 links, yes - although found them very tiring after more than 30 mins of operation, hence the change. They are very fiddly to get working, yes. We were using them on the 12V outlet but found it wasn't great so they're now on the 16.5V outlet on the controller which seems to do the trick. It could go to the West Country but is unlikely due to the location really. It is definately open to offers It is mostly finished, altough the dock area is ata a very basic stage at the minute. The grass sill needs adding as well, as does the cattle dock, the little warehouse building and station benches, lights etc. Hopefully I'll be able to get some pictures soon (when I'm next back from Uni) showing progress. Jack
Could you remind us of the track plan since the link isn't working?
JonPotter
Very rough track plan. Sorry about the delay!
RMweb Gold Donw Posted January 28, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 28, 2010 I thought Dingham couplings were handed (i.e. loop one end hook the other.) Does this causes any problems - like turning a cassette round? Donw
JonPotter
I thought I'd make a massive bump on this thread and put a few pictures in. The layout was completed (as much as any layout ever is!) for a exhibition in 2011 - due to changing cars we had to turn down a couple in 2012. However, we're keen to get it back out on the road at some point soon! The pics were shot today in the house, with the lights set up at the back of the layout (not ideal) and a fair amount of the general clutter scenic items packed away. lapford34102
Hi, Nothing but idle curiosity but assume the 1361 tank was a kit ? Cheers Stu
JonPotter
Hi Stu - it's actually a Tower Brass one. Completely unprototypical, but I fancied having one!
lapford34102
it's actually a Tower Brass one Ah Ha, thanks for that, interesting. Cheers Stu
pwr
Any more diesels since it last appeared? Paul R
JonPotter
Still the same stuff - a Hymek, Bubblecar and a completely out of place 02. I quite fancy a 20 (and also an even more out of place grey/yellow 37!!), but haven't got around to getting one/a kit yet. Too many other scales on the go! JonPotter
A bit of a tidy up means the layout is a bit more accessible, so three more shots: The Skytrex 02 (which I had almost forgotten I had!) posed at the end of the wharf. When not set up against a wall, a section of backscene runs along here, with half relief buildings a bit further on. The 02 is completely out of place for everything else, so doesn't have Dingham couplers fitted. 4F 44185 waits at the cattle dock. A general overview of the layout as set up here. The wharf, on the right, has an extra 18 inches added at exhibitions, which also extends the fiddle yard operational length to one long and one short cassette (when set up in the house there isn't room for two coaches and a loco!). Guest oldlugger
I like that last photo Jon; it's a shame that you can't smooth out the angles on the backscene with some curves, as it would really enhance what is already a very nice layout. All the best Simon
JonPotter
Thanks Simon. The section of the backscene by the alcove is actually curved - all of it is just resting at the minute hence all of the angles - it wasn't attached firmly when we bought it back from exhibiting it (two and a bit years ago!). JonPotter
I've spent most of the past few days focusing on stuff for a new 009 project, but have made a bit of progress with the O gauge. Here's a shot of the next wagon on the production line, still a way to go yet, but getting there: Also have finally sorted out the numberplates on the Pannier. The mess above the top hinge still needs to be sorted out: And a couple of different views, firstly the fiddle yard area. As can be seen we have short and long cassettes - the longer fiddle yard area allows for one long and one short - i.e. any loco plus two Mk. 1's or between five and seven wagons: And another angle - ignore the poster on the wall.....!:
JonPotter
'Henrell' will be out on the road again later this year, as we've accepted an invitation to Banrail in September (along with an in-construction 009 stablemate). Having agreed to do that, and going in the RM later this year, we'll gear up and accept some of the other invitations we've got (if they still stand a couple of years later!). I ran some trains today for the first time in a long while. Here's a shot:
