So my first thoughts were to construct a frame of glazing bars to which the clear sheet could be added later, but it would have to be too thick as can be seen in the first pic. I then tried cutting the glazing from 20th Perspex intending to fit the bars over it but again this was unsatisfactory. I have now decided to use the Portrait cutter to produce a self adhesive vinyl overlay for the bars stuck to slaters 10th clear sheet. The vinyl is Dark Grey matt so no painting required. The clear sheet is cut after the vinyl is stuck on. I think it works Ok! Looking forward to a closer look..... had pondered something similar for signal box windows. That was right next to Wellington Station, but as far as I know, was hardly used in 1960. The line did bisect the newer (1928) PS at Kirkstall, a bit further out. The two parts of this PS were joined by a rickety footbridge over the railway, which was four tracks then. The southern part of the PS was the coal wharf where coal came by barge on the Leeds Liverpool canal. The other, larger part of the site contained the PS proper and the offices (and laboratory where I worked until 1959) and where most of the coal came by rail or road. The lab staff had to go across to the canal side every day to check the coal being delivered by the barges. It could be a cold job and was unpopular with the staff. However, since it crossed the main Midland line out of Leeds, and trains were in view right from Armley Canal Road station in one direction and in the other right out to Kirkstall station. So, I used to volunteer for the job, but it was soon noticed I took longer than anyone else. One day the boss followed me and caught me hanging over the bridge waiting for the Bradford part of the “Devonian”. to appear. As it turned out, he was also interested in the railway and stood with me. He told he started his working life in the railway laboratories at Derby, but preferred the GWR engines. The A4 size sheet of self adhesive Vinyl with six panels cut. (about 55p a sheet). The process called "weeding", releasing all the unwanted pieces of Vinyl. Continuing the weeding process with tweezers. Weeding complete and the transparent "Transfer Film" applied to the first section. This is lifted off carefully and applied to the Plastiglaze. Transfer film removed to reveal the canopy ready to be cut out with a craft knife. The vinyl acts as a template for cutting. After cutting out and scoring the ridges, the sheet is folded against a steel rule using a paint scraper to ensure an even fold. Small fillets of 10th plasticard 1.5mm x 5mm and scored down the centre are applied to reinforce the corner joint. 17 2 19 2 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

The very eagle eyed amongst you will have noticed that on the Vinyl sheet, there is a 2mm wide surround to each canopy (pay attention at the back), this is saved on a spare sheet for later and is applied to the ridges to hide the join and score marks. Progress to date, 33 glazing sections complete and 18 to go. It should be mentioned that each one of the sections is a slightly different shape and so each of the 51 sections has to be drawn out separately and cut. I must admit that the geometry really hurt my head initially but after a couple of false starts it seems about right now! (the glazing not my head). All 51 canopies now constructed and temporarily placed. They all need the ridges doing next and then some trusses to fix them. Not entirely as per the real thing but I think it looks quite like it. Apart from a couple of days when the sun came out and being forced to drink beer, I have been plodding on with the canopies. After the euphoria of having completed the 51 glazed sections I had to start all over again fitting the 2mm vinyl to the ridges and joints. Once that job was done it was a case of fitting the plastic strip around the edge of the support structure to represent the gutter, over 13ft of it in six inch sections! Then as can be seen in the attached pic, a lick of paint all round including the platform surface. Next job is to fit the colour light signals to the last two sections of the structure so that it can be installed, then I need to make the small trusses and fit them to the glazed sections. One of the trusses can be seen in the pic, this is the prototype and as can be seen is what will hold the canopies in place slightly above the gutter. Some sections need only two trusses but most will need three, so over a hundred to make and paint before fitting - don't hold your breath waiting for the next update!!
