Popular Post TheLaird
Yes folks, its that time of year again! No not xmas, but for those of us who keep their trainsets in wooden buildings, time for a coat of preservative whilst the weather is still dry. Not only does this protect and waterproof the timber, if you use the right stuff it deters any critters from taking up residence for the winter! I find it helpful if you fumigate a little while beforehand as well. For the larger pests, I use a number of ultra sonic plug in transmitters. Despite all this, my ops team still keep turning up!! 20 1

If I turn up in with full nbc kit...... and I can remember the 1960 bellcodes...... have some free weeks coming up if you need a frame tester?
Popular Post TheLaird
Good news and bad, the shed got finished in a day and a half along with some pruning but I put my back out in the process. At least the sunny weather gave me a chance to rest and recuperate, admiring the handiwork whilst eating anti-inflammatory's like smarties!! However, back to the plot. One of the driving forces behind doing the canopy is the need to hang colour light signals from it. The signals need to be detachable for maintenance so I came up with the scheme in the photos. The brass tubes plug in to holes in the platform and go right through the baseboard. They then rotate and clip in to plasticard brackets I made attached to the transverse girders. The grey posts are not prototypical just my way of hiding the cable runs, hopefully will not be too visible once all is complete. These are signals 20 and 31. On the left is platform 5 third starter No20. On the right is P5 to North Departure starter and Calling On Subsidiary N031. The latter is also the section signal controlling entrance to the permissive block section, hence the need for the Calling On that works automatically when the block is at ToL, as illustrated. 21

No such thing as a stupid question! The plan is for the glazed sections above the signals not to be glued but just clip into place so they can be removed, one of the advantages of a non portable layout. TheLaird
Just to complete things on platform 5, this is my representation of signalW19, the second starter, along with a pic of the real thing.
TheLaird
I must confess that I have been putting off the next stage in the canopy construction as it proves to be yet another tedious, repetitive and boring job. As mentioned earlier each glazed section requires at least two and some three trusses. I have bitten the bullet and produced enough for this job and hopefully for those on platform 3&4. Cut on the trusty laser from 1mm perspex, they now need painting and then sticking to the glazed sections. 15 1

Popular Post TheLaird
Trusses painted and fixed to glazing sections. All now complete and placed in position. I will not glue them down yet as they need weathering along with the supporting structure. 24 10
Popular Post TheLaird
So here we go again. The glazing bars for the U Beam section of canopy that I constructed some time ago, weeding in progress. The canopy on the bench having the glazing fitted. And finally the U Beam section fitted in place on platform 5, again in need of weathering. 33 7 1
Ian_H
I think it would have been easier to go with Bradfields open roof ........ but then it wouldn't have been Leeds;-) Excellent modelling, well done and keep on giving us the insight to how you are producing these excellent models. best regards Ian 2 1
Popular Post TheLaird
Having done a decent job of the canopies, it made the skylights on the platform building look a bit shabby, so I decided to re do them to the same standard. 25 13

TheLaird
So with my courage grasped firmly in both hands, I am now embarking on the weathering down phase. This could be the ruination of six months work!! Watch this space for pics... or an obituary! John E. (Being afraid, very afraid!).
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted October 17, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 17, 2020 Try a mix of coloured inks and water.. bits of green, brown and black may just work..and you could wash it off or tone it down easier.... Baz
RMweb Gold lezz01 Posted October 17, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 17, 2020 Pale grey with a bit of green stirred in for pigeon droppings. Don't mix it in well you want a swirl effect, think about where a bird would sit and drop the mix on to that area. Don't splat it on at random it is concentrated below where they perch. Then add in a tiny spot of black/brown here and there. Regards Lez.
Popular Post TheLaird
So no obituary you will be pleased to know, just some pics of the weathered canopy. Hopefully will soon have some pics with trains in the platform. 23
Dave Holt
Coming along very nicely John. You could probably go a bit heavier with the weathering. My recollection of such glazed areas in steam days was that the glass was completely opaque. Are the other platforms due to have canopies eventually? Will make judging the position of the uncoupling magnets rather more interesting - unless you have CCTV looking down? Dave. 4
leopardml2341
Nah, there's a whole row of them a loco length or so from the buffers, so you can't fail to get one Don't be fooled by any driver claiming 'positioning skills'. 1
