The National Archives has a plan of Leeds Wellington under reference RAIL 491/640, but I imagine it will be a little early for your purposes, being dated 1868. Also to be found at the NA is 'West Riding of the County of York. City & County Borough of Leeds. Holbeck widening and Whitehall Junction. Sheet No. 2': plan covering an area from Aire Street to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and showing stations and railway lines. Scale: plan and horizontal sections 1 inch to 2 chains; vertical sections 1 inch to 40 feet. This is dated 1901. Probably of rather more use would be the large scale track plans from the former BR/OPC collection, now held by the NRM under reference 21159 (3 plans). Good luck with Son of Bradfield, and let me know if you are ever short of exhibition operators! (assuming it is destined to be exhibited)

Will you be building the art deco station concourse, which I presume was built in the 1930s? One thing I remember from the early 1960s was a news cinema in the NE corner, which I never visited as we never had enough time between trains when we were travelling from Hull to the Lake District with the church choir - we went on an annual youth hostel walking holiday with the vicar and choir master.

I'm really looking forward to seeing more of this project.

Best wishes,

Ian

There are a lot of photos and plans in 'Leeds Termini' published by Challenger ISBN 1-899624-27-9 . I well remember using that whenm at the age of 5, we moved house from Chesterfield to Clapham (North Yorks) in 1959 and the porter wheeling our stuff down the ramp from leeds new to the Midland Paltforms. I wasn't happy at the way he handled the box with our cat in it).

Hi Ian, the concourse was built around 1938 as part of the LMS rebuilding and formed the link between "Wellington" and "New" station as it was called before being renamed "City". That was about as far as the "integration" went. It is of course still standing and renovated to its art deco splendour, complete with Macdonalds and Wetherspoons!! I will model it in low relief against the end backscene.

Thanks for the info Andy, you are quite right about some of it being a bit early. The rebuilding and re modelling by the LMS in the 1930's formed the basis of what was left in the 1950's and is what I intend to model. The BR/OPC plans held by the NRM sound like they could be useful and I will try and persue them. There must have been drawings produced for the rebuilding in the thirties, I am told that the LMS drawing office in Manchester would have covered the Leeds area and wonder if the Manchester science Museum may have them or may have passed them to the NRM!! Something else to follow up.

Leeds City North (Wellington) - son of Bradfield! Otherwise known as 'Bradfield on Steroids'!

The Laird has a winter 1962/3 working time table which will form the basis for the planned sequence. We're also fortunate in being able to access the London Midland Region Midland Lines Passenger Train Marshalling book for 10th September 1962 to 16th June 1963 (or until further notice) via a scan on Robert Carrolls excellent BRCoachingStock Yahoo group, found HERE

Whilst this only covers trains travelling south of Chesterfield on the Midland Main Line, it gives us almost all the Class 1 train formations, the only exceptions being the Leeds-Glasgow working and its return train, and the Leeds - Morecambe/Carnforth services. Several of the class 2 Leeds-Sheffield trains were also steam hauled at this time. Published photographs (in print and on t'internet) are being scrutinised to give us the actual formations for the period concerned.

As well as Leeds Terminii, the recent Book Law publication on Leeds City is useful, whist several books in the Bellcode series on the railways of West & South Yorkshire are an invaluable resource.

We're slowly figuring out how the station was worked but more information on this subject, and details of which platforms were served by the arrivals and departures throughout the 24 hour period would be more than useful.

Got some time on Tuesday night, I'll scan my material then (how much I get done in the first attack will depend how easy the scans are)

Edit - I've just won the Leeds 1967 resignalling notice, which may be of interest.

Some of Donald Binn's many books may be of use as they show the trains further north and the one about the Little North Western has many photos of the Morecambe trains. There is one of his older ones called IIRC Railways in Airedale that covers the line out of Leeds. I can't remember the exact formations accurately but do remember meeting myt brother at Giggleswick on his way home from school with a 2P hauled trian. I'll also look in my father's trainspotting diaries for those dates and see if there are any locos recorded that would be of use.

Evening,

Not seen it mentioned afore on here, but http://www.davidheyscollection.com/ would more then likely prove useful, I prowl its pages all the time, some very good anecdote-y articles and a lot of really useful information on West Yorks railways, particularly the Steam/Diesel transition, and the years immediately prior and after.

Regards, and best wishes.

Jon.
