RMweb Premium Barry O Posted June 13, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 13, 2019 After mending some locos for a couple of clients I have managed to get some very subtle weathering on a number of diesels using mt normal ink and weathering powders Bachmann/Kernow Sir Daniel Gooch Vitrains Class 37 Heljan Class 58 Baz
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted October 28, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 28, 2019 I managed to givea Black 5 a little gentle "weatehring" at our show in Leeds this weekend. Found a colour photo of the loco.. so a quick wash of my usual ink.water and a drop of washing up liquid then added some weathering powder ..mostly soot black, followed by a bit of dark earth for the road dirt on the front of the cylinder covers...no rust on this loco! baz

tigerburnie
Nice work Barry, can I ask what ink do you use please, I will be starting on some wagons in the next few days hopefully.
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted November 20, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 20, 2019 I use non acrylic inks from White and Newton (for colours) and Rotring for the Black. The Range sell them as do other big craft shops. I get mine from my local Artist Shop..Dinsdales in Headingley/ 1
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted November 28, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 28, 2019 Spent last weekend doing a weathering" demo at Warley. Typically I show visitors a little bit of how I do weathering, then get them to try it and offer help and advice. An enjoyable (if somewhat tiring) weekend and our budding "weathering" visitors did a great job! A few examples of their and my work. First up a single wooden mineral wagon. Complete with a bit of rust Now two minerals, again with some rust - I need to clean some of their "rust on wooden planks" with a bit of ink/water on a cotton wool bud Then three off.. with just a touch of ink and water then coal dust brushed on while the ink is dry And some of my work. The start of some Coke Wagons (one Hornby the other a 3H kit built one). These need to be finished. Thanks to all who had a go! Baz
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted December 31, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 31, 2019 Been busy catching up with some weathering for me for a change Finishing the POs shown above Then some parcels stock... Two Stove Rs one built by me one by Nicktoix and a Lima Guv and a couple of locos SeaHorse.. a KS Jubilee I acquired recently. It needed a major motor sort out .. it seems to be sort of working but if all else fails a High Level Gearbox awaits fitting (The tender connecting wires need redoing.. soldered temporarily to try and sort out a mysterious short) and a very old Nucast J27 built by me. One of these has a brass chassis .. my other one has a whitemetal one.. time for a replacement to be fitted! Enjoy! and have a great 2020! RMweb Premium Barry O Posted March 22, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 22, 2020 Long time ..no posts... Been away and now confined to barracks. Time for some weathering. Some POs from the Leeds area and the other side not sure if any of these firms existed but they do look nice. Baz
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted May 6, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 6, 2020 Recent weathering work has been problematical due to some urgent house changes. Now everything is back in place I have restarted weathering. I was asked to weather a Hornby Rebuilt Patriot. The Stanier tenders had a propensity to gather "clag" along their top "edges". Oily water (from the loco exhaust) gets on the slope then a visit to the coaling plant does the rest. And it is a real problem trying to clean that bit in real life. That area has powder tapped onto the ink while still wet. Baz
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted June 4, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 4, 2020 Managed to get some weathering done today as its raining so I can't do gardening. A Bachmann Patriot renamed A Wills 4F with etched High sided tender e (I need to change the first 4 in the cabside number! A job for tomorrow) Model Loco Black 5 Kit built Jinty and some wagons with my one and only vac fitted 16T (apologies for the "tilt" my camera is playing up!) A couple of vans for Chapel en le Frith It is great that we can now look at a wealth of colour photos of locos and stock.. makes it easier to get a view of how and where to weather. RMweb Premium Barry O Posted June 25, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 25, 2020 Finally managed to complete a Loco for Carlisle. Mike Edge has built a "Super" Power EE type 4..It now has a Legomanbiffo Loksound 5 sound chip added plus.. courtesy of a photo in Michael Welches Book on "Diesels on the London Midland" a bit of weathering. As it isn't quite the same loco (D335 in in the photo but this is D334) I need to put a bit of weathering on the two outer yellow panels and then rub it off.. the nose doors had obviously been cleaned. RMweb Premium Barry O Posted June 28, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 28, 2020 (edited) Retouched the yellow panels.. just too dark to get a reasonable photo.. Baz Edited June 28, 2020 by Barry O

RMweb Premium Barry O Posted August 3, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 3, 2020 (edited) Two photos , both in BR green, one with black backgrounds, the other with red (mind you the black could be blue) one has an early BR crest but is dated 1962. The other is undated but I can't see the tender clearly. Baz Edited August 7, 2020 by Barry O
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted August 7, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 7, 2020 Some better photos today.. not as sunny! and a 3 quarter shot and from the back.. Baz
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted October 13, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 13, 2020 Getting weatehring to look right is easier if you have a nice colour photo. Without thta it can be difficult .. but not impossible so long as the person you are doing it for knows what they want. This S Scale NER 0-6-0 was built by Trevor Nunn and painted professionally.. it is owned by a friend of mine. colour photos of the loco are non existent.. but he could tell me what he wanted.. an "in use" loco. So a 20% ink/80 water mix was made up and applied starting at roof level and down, then from the bottom edge of the frames.. up. Where it was too "dark" I removed the mix with a cotton wool bud (wet ..using water from the tap) I then added a little "coal dust and soot" using weathering powder.. A bit of road dirt was added to the frames.. and more soot to the cab roof and tender cab roof. It is very subtle and takes as long as a heavy weathering would take.. Indeed the coupling rods show a smidgeon of dirt.. I enjoy doing weathering like this... Baz 4
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted October 16, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 16, 2020 (edited) I have renumbered/renamed one of my own Duchesses. It had been masquerading as City of Liverpool.. now it has become City of Leicester I have given it a "loco shed clean" weathered finish I need to go back and get a bit more "dirt" on the boiler top. But the tender has typical Stanier Tender dirt! Baz Edited October 17, 2020 by Barry O Spuling
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted January 2, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 2, 2021 I converted a Hornby Fowler 2-6-4T using Judith Edge rivetted tank overlays. Now managed to get a light weathering applied to it.. slightly different technique used.. no ink/water applied .. just a lot of powders worked in using a stiff brush. and some wagons/vans using the same technique I need to revisit the chassis and add a bit more "rust" highlights... RMweb Premium Barry O Posted February 20, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 20, 2021 Been catching up with some vans and locos. I had hoped the light would be better but today it is very grey.. A Brassmasters Ivatt Mogul Found an excellent colour photo showing the track mud on the tender chassis and some interesting shades of dirt on the pipework. and some staining below the smokebox door.. I started the Model Loco Stanier Black 5 ages ago but some commission work stopped me completing it.. And a few very shiny "bought in" vans have been toned down.. Parkside BR Fruit Van Ratio Banana Van ( I need to go and redo the door locking bar). and a Parkside Palvan I built in Lockdown 1 Baz
RMweb Premium PMP99 Posted March 10, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 10, 2021 Trying some of Barry’s techniques I have done some weathering of my Dapol wagon using dilute ink. I actually used a sepia ink, although it has had some other brown acrylic dry brushed around the frame. A tiny amount of rust dry brushed onto some ‘metal’ fittings as well. The inside will be further weathered later when I have thought about what load the wagon will contain.
