It is a Bill Bedford boiler and cab on a Bachmann O4 with a new reversing rod and Alan Gibson bogey wheels. I chose 63770 as it was one of the last examples at Colwick and I found an online colour image of it heading through Nottingham Victoria in July 64. I really need to do some more weathering on the model as I can still make out the emblem on the tender! Keep safe and keep modeling! Matthew Very natural, Matthew. Thanks for showing us. The BR device could just be discerned at times, even under grime....... Retford GC shed in the days when I was a trainspotter there. Note the wonderfully-wiggly pipe! Bytham's O4/7; built from a Little Engines kit by Rob Kinsey, painted/weathered by me. This one could do with better pony wheels. And Geoff Kent's O4/7, also ( think) built from a Little Engines kit, in EM. It's one of the few in the sub-class fitted with vacuum brakes, and it's running on his Black Lion Crossing. Popular Post dibateg
63770 seems to be a popular engine, and indeed the most photographed of the 04/7s Allen Hammett built me this one a few years ago, but I'm now thinking the numbers are too small - Allen has a habit of doing that! I didn't have the heart to weather the cab interior... They always look best in gloriously filthy condition. As well as 04/8 63639, combined from a Gladiator kit and DMR B1 etchings. I'm currently working on an O1 for myself, something I never though would be available as kit in 7mm - or as ready to run in 4mm for that matter. Apologies for the indulgence - but 2-8-0s rule! There's a story on the Annesley Fireman website, told by the author, who on his first day as a cleaner there was given that very task. Apparently they'd not had a cleaner in some time and that was the best thing the foreman could get him to do. Certainly helped us trainspotters along the line! Just looked up the photo on my phone, taken in November last year. Without wishing to be critical of such superb models from experts, they're all far too clean! CUTLER2579
Tony, did our Yorkshire Friend not win best in show at the O Gauge Guilds, Guildex show in about 2012 with that 04/8 63639, combined from a Gladiator kit and DMR B1 etchings. If not Best he was second for certain.. My Gazettes are not handy,so I can't check without phoning a friend. Lovely pair of Loco's as is the David Andrews O1. By the way you really had me scratching my head about the Tower J39.I thought you were saying only 64955 pulled a 4200 Group standard Tender, but then the Penny dropped. Allthe models they produced were fitted with such a tender and amongst them in real life was 2F Woodford Halse's 64955. Regards,Derek. Edited April 5, 2020 by CUTLER2579 Mention of J39. Woodcock29
I love seeing all the 2-8-0s. What they hauled probably earnt the LNER a high proportion of its income in the southern area. I'll probably end up with 12 or more LNER 2-8-0s on my medium sized layout (22.5 x 17ft). Just a comment to those modifying Bachmann O4s or WR/GWR RODs. It's well worth modifying the top of the cylinders so they sit higher up and the piston rod lines up with the centre of the driven axle. Also the pony wheel needs to be brought further back by modifying the pony truck. Graeme King and I wrote all this and more up in two articles in the GCRS journal Forward about 10 years ago. In regard to the incorrect footplate shape on the Bachmann O4 models I would recommend following the recent advice of Headstock. I'll be doing that for the first Bachmann O4 I did based on the original model. Also for anyone making an O4/8 Graeme King makes a nice taller chimney and the correct dome as well. Popular Post DougN
It's been another quiet weekend here in Australia, Melbourne has also been very wet and cold. I spent a fair bit of the weekend continuing with my pair of V2 kits. I feel my technique of soldered pins to the valve gear quite successful. The half joints are coloured in with a Sharpie texta as a solder resist along with using tight pins and using the Power flow cream flux, which seems to stay where it's put and not to wick into the joint. this is one of the chassis I have been working on. There is still 2 joints to be pined but it does catch the look of the loco it is meant to be! I do have to make sure this all moves and wiggles the way it needs too! Popular Post Tony Wright
As promised, the MR/M&GNR sequence on LB........ First up is the early morning Nottingham-Kings Lynn three-set. Some of the superannuated D3s finished their lives on the M&GNR, and this is one. Corridor stock was the usual accommodation on these services but pictures exist of non-gangwayed carriages in these trains as well. The usual consist was Brake Third/Compo/Brake Third. The time period on the little bit of LB is much more flexible than on the main line; namely, the last ten years of the line's existence. On summer Saturdays in the '50s the line was very busy, taking day- and week-trippers to the East Anglian coast from the East Midland cities. Because of the lengths of some of the passing loops (the M&GNR was single track for quite long sections), trains were limited to 10 carriages. Obviously, fully-laden this excursion (it should have a reporting number) needs two 4Fs. Double-heading would never be seen on the main line! The first Lynn-Notts three-set of the day set waits for the road to take the single-track section as far as Saxby Junction. With the 'express' out of the way, this modest train trundles off, next stop Castle Bytham. All the nine 4Fs available are ones which worked on the M&GNR. The most important train on the line was 'The Leicester' (in the summer, extended to New Street in certain years). It's in the charge of an Ivatt 4MT today (modified Bachmann). The train sported a Restaurant/Buffet car, of some antiquity. On other occasions, I'll put a B12/3 on 'The Leicester', though, strictly-speaking for this period the ex-GE Restaurant Car should be in carmine/cream (and the rest of the rake). Remembering an earlier time; another B12/3 heads westwards. Having probably passed 'The Leicester' at Melton Mowbray, a Yarmouth-bound service heads towards Bourne behind a K2. Another Ivatt 'Flying Pig' waits its turn. And then gets the road with another Lynn-Notts three-set. The loco (another modified Bachmann) was the work of my dear, late friend, Dave Shakespeare. It is a treasured possession. There'd probably be two freights a day (but unlikely on Saturdays). Here, the Up goods heads westwards behind a J6. And the Down one heads eastwards. Sometimes it would be much shorter. Nottingham-based 3Fs must have worked on the M&GNR. The last Notts-Lynn three set of the day plods along, next stop Bourne. 2Ps were quite common motive power, before the all-conquering 'Doodlebugs' took over. More trains can be made-up in the fiddle yard, but the ones above seem to be enough. I think (I hope) they're a reasonable representation of what once went east/west through Little Bytham 60-70 years ago (can it really be that long ago?). Most are made-up based on photographs. In between taking pictures, I've completed more of the point rodding on LB. It stretches into the distance. With its presence on both sides in places, there's over 30' of it! There are a few inevitable wiggles, but I think the effect 'works'. Now that the signals have been 'fixed', it's time to disguise their bases. Behind the camera, there's still some four feet to complete. Whew!!!! I've now run out of stools and rodding, so an order to MSE/Wizard/Comet will be made. It's one of those jobs which has to be done. Its presence is essential for realism, but what a bore/chore. Not because of any problems with the products - they're excellent. It's just tedious. I very much doubt that without 'lock-down' I'd have got this much done. Speaking of 'lock-down', I've just seen that selfish people have been disregarding the advice of staying at home and not gathering in groups. When I did the DVD with Hattons about the firm's O Gauge A3s last year, what I said about those who trespass on railways to get a shot of FLYING SCOTSMAN had to be cut. 'Politically-incorrect and pejorative' I was told. I used words like imbecile, moron, idiot and retard. Would it be incorrect to use such adjectives to describe those who flout the current rules? Those who put lives at risk through their 'me first' attitude. (Perhaps the moderators will make a judgement). On a personal level, it could be that we're banned from going on local walks; which Mo and I enjoy, but keeping our distance from others we meet. Regards, Tony. RMweb Gold zr2498 Posted April 5, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 5, 2020 A follow up to the GAM Silver Jubilee coach conversion on page 1740. The Coronation coaches have been coverted in much the same way via pin point bearings / shim washers and new wheel sets plus stand off spacers used to attach the bogies. So, now up to 9 coaches without slip. Please forgive the A4 (wrong period and loco). The Mallard wouldn't show any sign of life when put on track (another job!). I'm planning to detail the method used in a separate topic. Well done Tony for getting stuck into that rodding. Dave 12

My neighbours decided this afternoon to have a BBQ with music turned up (and swearing louder accordingly) and relatives invited round. It rather ended the peaceful afternoon's modelling in the garden I had planned.
