Evening All, here is a round-up of what I have managed to produce in 2020. I have always 'made stuff' but most of this has been under the radar. After some gentle arm twisting I finally took the plunge and started posting pictures of my work on RMWeb. This couldn't have come at a better time as it has been the source of much interaction during a period when it has been in short supply.

 

I started off 2020 by finishing off a scratchbuilt J78 crane tank which had been kicking around the back of my workbench for a couple of years.

 

 

This was followed by a scratchbuilt N12.

 

 

Restoration of an old Connoisseur Models J79. I originally built this a few years ago - the body was OK but I made a right hash of the chassis. A new scratchbuilt chassis was made and it now runs a lot better.

 

 

A 2mm finescale tar wagon for Laurie Adams. This is a 3-D printed body on a 2mm Association underframe. In an ideal world this would have been delivered to Laurie many months ago but it is unfortunately still in my possession.

 

 

Another restoration job - this is an old Ks Y8 that my late grandfather made 40+ years ago. It never ran very well so I made a new chassis and fitted it with a small High Level gearbox and motor, and it is now much better. It isn't the best  model but it has some sentimental value.

I completed these amongst other things during the last six Covid months, although living in Fortress WA we have not felt the effects of the virus as much as others. That said, getting modelling supplies from the UK has been tricky at times.

With regard to curtains in carriage/car windows, I just flick a sable over the inside of the glazing, using (what I believe to be) the right enamel colours. It's really two flicks; to give a suggestion of where they might be tied back. 

 

 

Blue for 1st Class Pullmans.

 

 

And fawn/yellow for 2nd Class. 

 

Pre-War, most Pullmans had blinds, not curtains. 

 

 

I think Hornby's rendition of Pullman curtains is a bit over-stated. They're particularly prominent in its 1st Class LMS carriages.

 

 

They're just visible here in this Comp (and, yes, I've still to alter the roof!).

 

In defence (if defence is the right word?), these are all layout cars/carriages, built as part of whole rakes; usually seen passing at high speed. 'Sketch-book' might be the right description.................

I am not sure I can legitimately post any photos of projects fully completed this year. There are many part completed ones, including 4 O Gauge locos plus one carriage and one horsebox, no fewer than 16 4mm carriages and one 4mm loco, which are at varying stages of completion. The baseboards for a new EM layout and the track have been sorted out.

 

Covid restrictions have caused big cutbacks in my involvement in two big projects, helping with Doncaster and the building of the new "Burnden Park" but hopefully it won't be too long before I can get involved with those again.

 

About the only two tasks that were almost completed were the 4mm model of Valour (still needs painting) and the LD&ECR signalbox for the EM layout, which is only needing a signalman and a nameboard.

Can I just say, slightly belatedly, that picture is an object lesson in how to properly 'plant' things on station platforms (and any other surface for that matter). A lovely, natural scene.

2020 has been very productive for me in terms of rolling stock. I used to think carriages and wagons were a bit boring but then I started looking at ECML formations I’d like to model and realised how interesting coaches are.

 

This is a Hornby Railroad donor cut down to 52’6” with new sides made from plasticard. I based the conversion on some of the ones Phil Brighton showed on his Potter’s Bar thread but he has the advantage of having a laser cutter.

This is a cut’n’shut of a Hornby CK and BCK to make a 52’6” TK...

...and with the other halves of the Hornby donors I made this D149 BFK. It still needs glazing and final detailing.

 

Moving on to locos I started the year by finishing off a Bachmann O4/1 to O4/3 conversion.

 

Like LNER4479, my lockdown project was an LRM superheated D2. This was my first etched brass loco and being a 4-4-0 it was quite challenging. The paint chips are from where I’ve been filing out the frames recently to stop short circuits and I was too lazy to take the body off. I’ll paint over them at some point.

I also made one of the new MJT V2s (and I’ve got a second waiting for for a chassis and tender).

This J11 had been in out of the box condition for years and decided it was time I renumbered it and weathered it. It turned out to be a bit more involved than that as I swapped the safety valves and made a snifting valve.

My biggest project has been the new layout; Tuxford North. As the photo shows, the scenery has barely been started with only the mainlines ballasted. It is however, finished in terms of electrics and track-laying.

For me, this has been a year of slow but steady progress with my layout.  I am taking my time with this project, for me its all about enjoying the journey, rather than setting a deadline to reach the destination.  

 

At the beginning of lockdown I had track laid and ballasted but the baseboard tops were bare ply... since then I have relaid some of the track to further ease the curves, built up and sculpted the landscape, walled and flocked the embankment and cuttings, constructed a tunnel and a four foot long retaining wall.  It all still looks a bit too neat and 'park-like' but will hopefully look more natural when I'm finally done with the static foliage applicator and mastered how to create realistic wild buddlea's!

 

I've also progressed with digitising my locomotive fleet.  Over 100 lamps and 60 loco crew members have been painted up and are in the process of finding their way onto various locomotives, along with a sizeable heap of miniature lumps of coal.   I've also built a new modelling workbench and spray booth, and installed a set of 'kickback' sidings for storing rakes of rolling stock to increase the operational flexibility of the layout.  So whilst I have been busy, I do apologise for having built nothing this year in the way of rolling stock to 'show and tell' on these pages.  Next will be additional scenics, the main station buildings and canopy, a coaling stage and office for the MPD, the installation of a turntable, and then signalling the layout...  It is undoubtedly a slower process when undertaking all the layout construction by yourself, becoming a 'jack of all trades'... and the inherent learning curve does present its frustrations at times, but overall I am pleased with progress to date, both with the layout and the skills being acquired on the way.

Thank you Chas - they are in 7mm scale - O gauge. I moved from 4mm scale about 15 years ago... I enjoy building locos and in 7mm there is a lot more loco to actually build!

I've told this tale, at least in part, before..........................

 

About 11 years ago, John Houlden, in his OO modelling days, dissatisfied with the V2 options of the time, built this.

 

It's part scratch-built, part DJH, part DMR and part Comet.

 

 

 

It was built to run on his (subsequently-cremated) Gamston Bank layout; which it did.

 

About four years ago, he decided to 'graduate' to O Gauge, Gamston Bank was burnt and (with some help from me) most of his locos and stock were sold-on (to several folk on here). This was the only loco not sold (apart from an A2/3 which he built for his dad, and he's kept as a memory). It was lent to Roy Jackson, and Roy built an EM set of loco and tender frames for it, to run on Retford; which it did (sadly, I have no pictures of it on that great railway). Several rakes of John's remaining stock were converted to EM as well. 

 

With Roy's death last year, I then sold-on the rest of John's stock (converting it back to OO). As a 'thank you', John gave me the V2. A most-generous gift. 

 

Now, with Retford's future uncertain at the time, and an EM V2 being of little use to me, I built a Comet set of frames in OO for it. What had happened to John's original OO chassis, nobody seemed to know.

 

 

 

I pinched most of the bits from Roy's EM chassis (just fitting shorter axles; heresy, I hear you cry!), and 60826 proceeded to bowl round LB. 

 

I even sold the EM frames on behalf of CRUK.

 

And then - Retford re-risen! 

 

Now, I must be very careful with my words here, because I appear to cop the ire of some by even suggesting anything on Retford could be 'improved'/'added to', especially if I'm involved. 

 

Retford certainly doesn't have enough V2s (in fact, it needs many more locos - I intend to be busy!). So, why not re-chassis (again) the John Houldlen V2, back to EM? OO, to EM, back to OO and then back to EM.

 

 

My friend to whom I sold Roy's EM frames, knowing of the Retford situation, gave me them back (thanks Ray). All I've done is to acquire all the necessary bits to complete it again. I've also got a brass sub-frame for the tender. Motion next!

 

One thing I did notice was that the body rode a little high. I've lowered it slightly (easier than lopping off bits off the tops of the frames), meaning a little more clearance needed underneath the footplate. 

 

And the OO chassis? Well, it's now in a box; I now have the best of both worlds - one loco/tender body and two chassis. Several other LB locos are going to have the same......................

 

As a further commitment to Retford, Geoff West has loaned to Sandra the JH rakes he bought (now re-gauged back to EM - OO, EM, OO and EM again!).

This is very good news. If I recall correctly, Sandra has only two V2s currently on Retford. One came from Roy and the other Sandra built as a lockdown project. Sandra has another V2 on the way but the layout could accommodate more. I believe there are hardly any spare engines at the moment and most if not all B1s are on trains when one or two should be standing pilot at Retford. From memory, there are only four A3s on the layout and at least one of those (Singapore) has somewhat limited pulling power.

 

As well as the carriages from Gamston Bank that Geoff West kindly loaned to Sandra, one of the ex-Gamston carriages I acquired has also now gone to Retford, a Thompson BZ which Sandra altered to EM. It's on a GC train. 

 

My own contribution to Retford has been somewhat more basic. The old NuCast B1 I acquired from Tony has gone there and Sandra has altered it to EM. There are also 20-30 of my RTR carriages in various trains including three sets on the GC side, which was very short of stock. One of those is a stop-gap set of Hornby parcels vans.

 

There is one 15-carriage train on the GN side which has nine ex-Gamston Bank carriages from Geoff, a couple of Hornby Mark 1s from me, two Bachmann Mark 1s which were reallocated from other trains and two more which Sandra added.

Hope its not too late for the showcase of 2020 projects?

 

I think 2020, apart from the obvious end of the world, has been rather rewarding in regards to my modelling. Although many projects have not been finished yet, here are a small showcase of the ones I am most proud off.

 

I must apologise for the horrible photos. 

 

Kicking off with the refurbishment of a DJH J10, I think I paid $60 AUD for this off Ebay as a non runner, quick email to The Man, The Myth, The Legend Tony Wright we deduced a new motor/gearbox, wheels and she should be good as new and so it was. Here she is here in need of some more fine tuning TLC accompanied by two scratchbuilt GNR ballast wagons. The one on the left, of which there are two, is cut down and made from a Hornby wagon and the longer one is a cut and shut job from a NER plate wagon from Wizards. I have also been working on the Dolphin wagons but that's another story very soon. Watch this space.

 

 

Another project was the Graeme King conversion for a K2, this is more or less finished, the lining annoyed the hell out of me, maybe a good weather to hide it? No no Jesse don't be lazy. 

Now the wagons from right to left, another Graeme King resin job, an LNER meat container, I have another three to do. Next is a DS GCR pershibles wagon, a real pain in the backside but I got there in the end and lastly a Wizards NER Perishable van.

Now for the finale...

 

One thing I noticed this year was my moving away from the RTR market. With Hornby releasing there W1 next year I was still adamant to make my own using Graeme King's resin parts and here she is, a suitable tender is on its way from SEF. It may not be as good as Hornby's but its mine! Another Milestone reached was to finally finish my first locomotive kit, a Nucast J6. A challenge as the body was still designed to sit on a whitemetal lump but I think she's turned out alright, it even works!!!!

 

 

All of this could not have been achieved without the help of many people on here, a few stand out, Graeme King, Tony Wright and also Jonathan Wealleans who I bombard with messages at least twice a day. Thanks a bunch.

I think 2020, apart from the obvious end of the world, has been rather rewarding in regards to my modelling. Although many projects have not been finished yet, here are a small showcase of the ones I am most proud off.

Kicking off with the refurbishment of a DJH J10, I think I paid $60 AUD for this off Ebay as a non runner, quick email to The Man, The Myth, The Legend Tony Wright we deduced a new motor/gearbox, wheels and she should be good as new and so it was. Here she is here in need of some more fine tuning TLC accompanied by two scratchbuilt GNR ballast wagons. The one on the left, of which there are two, is cut down and made from a Hornby wagon and the longer one is a cut and shut job from a NER plate wagon from Wizards. I have also been working on the Dolphin wagons but that's another story very soon. Watch this space.

 

 

Another project was the Graeme King conversion for a K2, this is more or less finished, the lining annoyed the hell out of me, maybe a good weather to hide it? No no Jesse don't be lazy. 

Now the wagons from right to left, another Graeme King resin job, an LNER meat container, I have another three to do. Next is a DS GCR pershibles wagon, a real pain in the backside but I got there in the end and lastly a Wizards NER Perishable van.
