Woodcock29
Tony I think the Hornby body reflects the curves of the prototype better. With a kit built chassis and a proper turnunder of the cylinder covers you would have the best you can make of an A4 in 4mm scale I reckon. RMweb Gold Tony Teague Posted May 25, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 25, 2021 (edited) Tony If you are looking for realistic / current prices for kits that are no longer in production, you might take a look at WM collectables whose business majors on this sort of thing. See: http://wmcollectables.co.uk/index.php?pg=gb (I should add, no conection whatever!). Best wishes Tony That site also includes current production kits including SEF, Roxey and LRM. I expect that Tony W has a fairly good idea as to S/H prices for the DJH LNER kits but the Brassmasters kits may be a bit more problematic. They are rather complex and hence probably have a smaller market. I have rarely seen them on Ebay and never in the S4 forum sales section. They are also rather more expensive new - about £200 for the LMS 4-6-0s - and tenders aren't included adding another £50 or so. The Perseverance kits haven't been available for some time (although that may change) and the AGW ones are only intermittently batched produced as far as I know so those have a degree of "rarity" value. 1

Best wishes Tony I will second this recommendation; I have previously used them for a guide price to list on eBay (nothing as exotic as a brass loco kit though). Perhaps set your price by 10% under WMC. As a business WMC are entitled to charge a bit more; your price will discourage the traders (who will want more margin) but will attract buyers who will see a competitive price for a kit they actually want.

RMweb Gold Popular Post Barry Ten Posted May 25, 2021 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted May 25, 2021 A late entry into the old RTR thread - not really that old, perhaps, but still going well. It's a 40 year old Hornby Spamcan (obviously!) which was re-released in 1981 after a hiatus in the catalogue. This was the period when Hornby were starting to lift their game relative to Mainline and Airfix, with models such as the Schools and the Fowler 4P which were a step up from what had gone before. At the time, I'd been absorbing the works of Ivo Peters et al and I had high hopes that the re-released Bulleid would be improved in some respects, but other than the semi-flanged center wheel, I don't think Hornby made any changes to the model. All I did to mine, following an article in Model Trains, was to add rear cab sheets, fill the holes in the body side, restore a bit of missing lining, and add the tops of the ladders on the back of the tender. I also glued in a bit of weight (a few Tri-ang coach weights) to give a bit more adhesion. At some more recent point I changed the bogie wheels but that's about it, and it's never had anything done to it mechanically. I'd given up on it as a weedy non-runner but all it needed was a bit of gentle persuasion and it came back to life, and was soon running very quickly on just one pickup - the other had gone out of adjustment! I tweaked the back to backs a bit (they were a tiny bit tight on Code 75 pointwork), fixed the pickup, added some light lubrication and she's as good as - if not better than - new. I say better than because she's now become sure-fitted enough to take the 7 coach Pines, with just a bit of realistic wheel slip when getting going. It might seem like madness but to my eye, this catches the look of a Bulleid Pacific quite satisfyingly and doesn't have that obviously riding-high look of lot of Tri-ang era stuff. So rather than bin the model, or replace the chassis, I've tracked down one of the Crownline detailing kits that I could neither find nor afford when they were on the market, but which should now make for a fun little project. Popular Post Tony Wright
Thanks for all the feedback and the PMs regarding the list of kits. Some appear to have already sold. My apologies for suggesting the owner of the kits has already died. Indeed, I wish him the swiftest of recoveries, though he won't be building those kits. Anyway, much fun has been had today when a good friend came round, bringing with him several kit-built locos to run on LB. Including................. An ABS L1. A Craftsman C12 A DJH A1. I fixed an intermittent short on this one. A DJH A3. An LRM J6. A Nu-Cast O2/2. And an SEF J39. All of these ran really well. One which was collected was this Crownline A2/3, on which I'd repaired the valve gear. Tevor, many thanks for bringing these, and my most grateful thanks for your hugely-generous donation to CRUK.

Unfortunately, I don't think the owner will ever be his old self again. The gentleman in question has been suffering declining health for several years and only just survived a near-fatal heart problem a few years ago. Had he not already been in an ambulance or with paramedics at the time, he would not have survived. It's good to know there is some interest in these kits. The kits are the tip of the iceberg in terms of what there is as I'm charged with selling the RTR stock as well. Most of it appears to be models made in 2000-2010 or thereabouts. Lots of old dark blue with red line Bachmann boxes, plus other makes. I need to sort it all out and will probably then sell most to dealers. A further twist, which may yield some more kits, is that there is a self-storage unit that the family has yet to empty out. Apart from knowing it's full, they have no idea what is in it. It could be more models, kits or something else entirely. Another friend is in charge of sorting out the railway documents, such as working timetables and special traffic notices, which are going to a society. There are probably several thousand individual documents. All this has made me wonder what poor, unfortunate person will need to deal with all my stuff when I eventually fall off the perch. As I'm only 55, hopefully that won't be for a while yet. 5

As many of our possessions might be of a specialist nature, about which our heirs and executors may know very little (or nothing), I'd suggest that it is worth leaving some notes alongside ones will to tell those "poor unfortunate person(s)" where best to seek the right advice on how to dispose of such things. I did this some time ago on advice from my lawyer and I feel comfortable that my 'successors' will know where to seek guidance. RMweb Premium Andy Hayter Posted May 26, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 26, 2021 On that sombre note I am in the process of generating a death file. My own circumstances being complicated by the need to inform people in 3 languages about my future (hopefully very future) demise. So letters to banks, pension authorities, etc are all being prepared with only the need to fill in the dates. Included in this is a note of where to find a catalogues of my railway items and a list of the books and periodicals along with a number of potential commercial buyers. 2
RMweb Premium Chamby Posted May 26, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 26, 2021 I keep a spreadsheet of all my model railway items, including price paid and modifications, including the make/version of DCC chips installed. My wife knows that I keep this up to date, and how to contact trusted fellow club members who could help her if it ever becomes necessary. All the RTR items original boxes are neatly stored and labelled too. It might sound a bit OCD but I see this as an inherent part of my hobby. Keeping track of stuff like this this has made me very aware of the cost of my indulgence, over the years it runs into tens of thousands of pounds spent, though the second hand value will be much less. Given her long-suffering acceptance and patience with my hobby, the least I can do is not leave her with a bewildering and frustrating task of clearing out my stuff, and give her a reasonable chance of recovering some of its value. 8 2

Unfortunately non -modellers don't always realise that what an item originally cost is not what it will fetch second hand. They often therefore have an unrealistic idea of what a collection is worth and are disappointed when they are offered less. It is perhaps a good idea to add an indication of what a model might sell for on your spreadsheet. 1

I think I wrote about this subject on this very thread only recently. @Chambyand @Andy Hayter are clearly ahead of the game and I really need to follow my own advice and get on with this, even if (hopefully) will need to refer to the information for a very long time. To use management terminology, your Will is the Strategy, your "Life File" is the Plan for how it will be executed (in both senses of the word). For instance, it is no good your will saying you want half your money to go to "Organisations related to Animal Welfare", when that could conceivably mean the local vet.

RMweb Premium Clive Mortimore Posted May 26, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 26, 2021 I have never considered how much my model railway stuff is, to me it is priceless as it gives me a lot of pleasure. If when I am gone the vultures think they are sitting on a fortune it is up to them how the dispose of it and how much they can flog it for. Its monetary value to me while I am alive is meaningless and it will be more so when I am not around. 5 3
RMweb Premium Andy Hayter Posted May 26, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 26, 2021 Totally agree Clive and my file contains a note to expect a 30% return on the models and a 15% return on the books. To me it is completely irrelevant to but to a surviving relative that is important information and most particularly does not raise expectations. 1
