I think the Hornby body reflects the curves of the prototype better. With a kit built chassis and a proper turnunder of the cylinder covers you would have the best you can make of an A4 in 4mm scale I reckon.

I have also found that my current (old and due to be replaced) DAB radio provides excellent warning of RF arcing.

My analogue TV running on a digibox is also a great detector.

I've just been sent a list of kits which I'll attempt to sell on behalf of a bereaved family.

Not a bereaved family but the owner is very unwell as a result of a stroke and serious heart problems. I'm helping to clear the house as they need to move to somewhere smaller and more suited to their needs.

By the way, the list has "chassis" as this is what is on the box.

If you are looking for realistic / current prices for kits that are no longer in production, you might take a look at WM collectables whose business majors on this sort of thing. See:

http://wmcollectables.co.uk/index.php?pg=gb

(I should add, no conection whatever!).

Best wishes

That site also includes current production kits including SEF, Roxey and LRM.

I expect that Tony W has a fairly good idea as to S/H prices for the DJH LNER kits but the Brassmasters kits may be a bit more problematic. They are rather complex and hence probably have a smaller market. I have rarely seen them on Ebay and never in the S4 forum sales section. They are also rather more expensive new - about £200 for the LMS 4-6-0s - and tenders aren't included adding another £50 or so. The Perseverance kits haven't been available for some time (although that may change) and the AGW ones  are only intermittently batched produced as far as I know so those have a degree of "rarity" value.

I will second this recommendation; I have previously used them for a guide price to list on eBay (nothing as exotic as a brass loco kit though).

Perhaps set your price by 10% under WMC.  As a business WMC are entitled to charge a bit more; your price will discourage the traders (who will want more margin) but will attract buyers who will see a competitive price for a kit they actually want.

I'll be collecting them at the weekend, and I'm told they're complete (some with wheels).

If anyone is initially-interested, please PM me.

All this has made me wonder what poor, unfortunate person will need to deal with all my stuff when I eventually fall off the perch. As I'm only 55, hopefully that won't be for a while yet.

As many of our possessions might be of a specialist nature, about which our heirs and executors may know very little (or nothing), I'd suggest that it is worth leaving some notes alongside ones will to tell those "poor unfortunate person(s)" where best to seek the right advice on how to dispose of such things. I did this some time ago on advice from my lawyer and I feel comfortable that my 'successors' will know where to seek guidance.

(Apologies for this sombre interlude!).

On that sombre note I am in the process of generating a death file.  My own circumstances being complicated by the need to inform people in 3 languages about my future (hopefully very future) demise.

So letters to banks, pension authorities, etc are all being prepared with only the need to fill in the dates.  Included in this is a note of where to find a catalogues of my railway items and a list of the books and periodicals along with a number of potential commercial buyers.

I keep a spreadsheet of all my model railway items, including price paid and modifications, including the make/version of DCC chips installed.  My wife knows that I keep this up to date, and how to contact trusted fellow club members who could help her if it ever becomes necessary.

All the RTR items original boxes are neatly stored and labelled too.

It might sound a bit OCD but I see this as an inherent part of my hobby.  Keeping track of stuff like this this has made me very aware of the cost of my indulgence, over the years it runs into tens of thousands of pounds spent, though the second hand value will be much less.  Given her long-suffering acceptance and patience with my hobby, the least I can do is not leave her with a bewildering and frustrating task of clearing out my stuff, and give her a reasonable chance of recovering some of its value.

I think of it as a life file, given the content.  Sounds much better!

Unfortunately non -modellers don't always realise that what an item originally cost is not what it will fetch second hand. They often therefore have an unrealistic idea of what a collection is worth and are disappointed when they are offered less. It is perhaps a good idea to add an indication of what a model might sell for on your spreadsheet.

I think I wrote about this subject on this very thread only recently.  @Chambyand @Andy Hayter are clearly ahead of the game and I really need to follow my own advice and get on with this, even if (hopefully) will need to refer to the information for a very long time.  To use management terminology, your Will is the Strategy, your "Life File" is the Plan for how it will be executed (in both senses of the word).  For instance, it is no good your will saying you want half your money to go to "Organisations related to Animal Welfare", when that could conceivably mean the local vet.

I have never considered how much my model railway stuff is, to me it is priceless as it gives me a lot of pleasure. If when I am gone the vultures think they are sitting on a fortune it is up to them how the dispose of it and how much they can flog it for. Its monetary value to me while I am alive is meaningless and it will be more so when I am not around.

Totally agree Clive and my file contains a note to expect a 30% return on the models and a 15% return on the books.  To me it is completely irrelevant to but to a surviving relative that is important information and most particularly does not raise expectations.
