I buy a lot of second hand stock and I find that about a quarter has worn axle holes.

Will be brass bearing some Airfix B sets.

Yet the Airfix B4s seem to hold up well, I fit Replica bogies to Limas.

Tony.

In similar vein I altered the ride height of these Hornby (ex-Lima) CCT vans by melting in bearings, then gently nudging them up a mm or so.  Apologies for the rubbish picture.

No idea who told me this, whoever it was it was yonks ago....... but if there was a problem with sticky wheels then a poke around in the 'axle box' with a 4b pencil would keep things running smoothly.

These days I also swear by a 'Truck tuner' something now I wouldn't be without.

If it doesn't have brass bearings, then it gets a good twiddling round with the tuner.

Its amazing the crud that comes out!

Tony....,l re the Deltic, there's always plenty of 'old' kits on EBay. The new kits are made from soft ( to save the dies I guess) recycled plastic and the plastic is softer and not as crisp as the kits from the 60's and 70's.

Eight hours ago this 42 year old Kitmaster DELTIC was in one piece. Then, in attempting some routine maintenance, during the journey from Little Bytham to my workshop, I dropped it! On to stone flags! It did not survive, though, astonishingly it's old modified Lima chassis did; and, it still runs fine. Amazing.

Now, some questions if I may?

Are Dapol DELTIC (ex-Kitmaster) kits still available (and with them the name transfers)?

Are Bachmann prototype DELTICS still available?

There's always the one elder son Tom has been building, but that's now in EM Gauge.

I'd like to replace the dear old smashed-to-bits thing in one way or another.

Thanks in anticipation.

It can still be seen running - it will appear on LB during the forthcoming virtual exhibition.

Deltic kits are still in the Dapol range - see  https://www.Dapol.co.uk/shop/model-accessories/self-assembly-oo-kits/c009-deltic-diesel-locomotive-511

Good evening Al,

In the case of these three (all 4mm), I've forgotten their origins, but they're rather nice.

And Iain Henderson's Caprotti one.

396308900_TowerBlackFive01.jpg.85c3ef659503ba0b6a25ae300d743a87.jpg

I built one in O Gauge, from a Tower/DJH kit, which Ian Rathbone painted.

I've also repaired some, and detailed a Hornby example using Brassmasters' parts which featured on the Right Track 4 DVD.

I also built a Comet Caprotti Black Five, which featured in BRM.

Regards,

Tony.

Thanks, Tony. Very nice indeed to see those.

I don't believe I've ever seen one in the experimental green liveries (there were three, weren't there, and only lined on one side?) but it's certainly of historical interest. Your 7mm one looks suitably imposing.

Many thanks,

Al

Is the body beyond salvation, Tony? I've often thought "that's that!" after dropping something but after coming back to it with a clear head, things sometimes look more salvageable, if that's a word. If plastic cracks quite cleanly, it's surprisingly amenable to being reassembled with minimal signs of damage.

I'm sure they're very nice but Tony's ex-Deltic ("It is no more") had two motors and if required, could just about pull his car in and out of the garage.  If the chassis still works, someone of Tony's talents could probably knock the plastic kit together and paint it in an afternoon, although there'd be no soldering to do and he would have to use gl*e......

There isca Kitmaster society that sell off original kits. They used to have a stand at Warley so Paul Jones may well have contact details.

Jamie

I wonder whether they have them in the original Shredded Wheat packaging, which is where mine came from?

Hi

I am sure that would be the case, but one of Tony’s questions was Are the Bachmann Deltics still available?

so I assumed he was referring to the Prototype Deltic.

The vehicles all have wooden underframes, other than the Bogie vehicle. The solebars should be the body colour not Black, only the metal parts were painted Black.

That well known and widely advertised model railway establishment in Liverpool has one Dapol DP1 kit left in stock at the time of writing, at £10.34.

The one in Sheffield also shows it in stock, at £11.00.

So they are still around.
