Hi all,

Slightly off topic for Dent but can anyone identify the locations of these photos, I am wading through thousands of old photos and the old grey cells are well grey even more!

I hope someone out there recognizes some of them, they may all be the same place to be honest.

Just catching up on your progress Mike.  Photos 1 and 3 are I am sure the same place, although I am in about four-minds as to where it is.  Picture 2 with the shed, I am fairly sure is Carlisle Kingmoor - I am just not sure if the south end of the shed was wired.

Hi Rich

Yes it is Carlisle Kingmoor TMD taken following full electrification to Glasgow. It was the angle on one of the shots and the office block that had me stumped but my mate Andy confirmed it some weeks later, should have noted it on the forum but seems I forgot. DOH.

Hi Mike, Belated Happy New Year, and may see you at Stafford in a few weeks, I hope to be going on the Sunday.

Just been back through the last couple of pages, and I must say the progress is terrific, I'm looking forward to doing a Roundy Layout if I have enough room after we move.

All the very best for 2020 and beyond.

Hi all,

Had a day out to the Stafford show yesterday, I don't think the show was as good as last year but I got a few good deals. We chose to travel by train and take advantage of the free bus service laid on, I doubt I will try this again. The inward journey went well and we opted for the 2.40 departure. Arriving at the bus sitting in the car park at about 2.15 we found it was full and the next bus would be a 3.10 departure which meant we would miss our booked train. The farce that followed is too long winded and included attempting to book a taxi from 4 separate Stafford firms who were all unable or unwilling, we felt we had gone to a 3rd world town not a county town. In the end the preserved bus operators made alternative arrangements saving a couple of dozen exhibition goers a lot of grief. I have to say this put me off after many years of supporting this show.

I almost went to Stafford by train and bus, glad I drove today now based on your experience! Enjoyed the show I have to say.

The layout looks great as always. Regarding the turnbuckles on the cement containers, 'N Brass' do some 4mm scale etched ones for Conflat containers, or are there different versions? Item 4489 on this page:

Martyn.

I’ve actually got an etch of these turnbuckles but in N and have to say in over 50 years of N modelling they are the first things that have defeated me.

Hi guys,

Thanks for your comments on the turnbuckles. The first wagon is actually made up from Roxey Mouldings components and required 5 separate pieces on each to make up the length, in all 30 pieces to restrain 3 containers! I then opted to use my own version of the screw-link coupling I had etched for reviving some old LIMA parcels stock but this just looks a bit on the thick side, considering its meant to be a coupling that makes perfect sense so I'm drawing up a special fret to do all three containers with just two components, it's nearly there!

Hi all,

Just had a fantastic day on an official visit to Buckley Wells workshops at the East Lancashire Railway. I am currently manufacturing some new doors (see below) for the only preserved Class 110 DMU which is based there and was invited to the site and given a full one-to-one guided tour by the owner Allan. It certainly brought back memories of my days as a fitter at BR, in particular, Glasgow Works and Derby Loco' Works. Allan is also the CME of the Bury Standard 4 Group (80097 + 46428) and I was privileged to see some repairs being done first hand under the cab floor on 80097 and preparation work being carried out on parts of 46428. Although the whole workshop site is pretty large and there is plenty of machine tools and equipment it is obviously not as strait forward as it was in my days at BR. I was particularly impressed with the repairs to an ex:LMS 1st Class Dining Car, the internal joinery work on the paneling etc is outstanding. One other surprise was seeing the only Class 28 in residence D5705 which looks pretty good. Whilst walking around and being introduced to many different people working on various projects it does sort of make you feel as though you should be doing something to help. I kept saying 'I used to work on those' every time we passed a particular loco class but it was the 75t breakdown crane a type I worked on at Derby which seemingly stunned Allan as it appears no one is that sure about how it works. He said I would be like gold dust to these here! Ah well perhaps when I retire eh! In the meantime I am certainly going to join the Standard 4 Group as these loco's were among my absolute favourites back in the day and 80000 was allocated to my local shed Corkerhill (67A) almost all its life.

I know its not model railway chat but I thought it quite relevant. Dent is undergoing a bit of a tidy up in preparation for Andy York's photography visit in March for a forthcoming edition of BRM something I am really looking forward to.

That's it guys.

Mike,

It's your thread and your restoration work is a million times more relevant than MANY of the threads on this site, which are filled with hundreds of posts of inane chatter - and NO product whatever.

Great work here. I've many memories of DMUs in the 1970s, mostly 108s.

Good to hear about the Dent photoshoot. Maybe one day AndyY will catch up with me before I destroy the layout. I don't buy rail mags any more, but I'll be sure to get the BRM issue with Dent in.

Hi all,

I've been busy preparing Dent for the photoshoot next week, a general clean-up and a few scenic refreshments here and there, its amazing how much dust collects on the grass especially. In the meantime I have been working a couple of tool van conversion for my new breakdown crane. I am using two of those cheap 'Hatchet' Mk1 coaches which were free with a magazine some years ago, not a bad coach for the money but they stand out in a rake if mixed with Bachmann or Hornby.

316714253_2020-02-2217_31_37.jpg.9028046e7ca1b77585f45c592fe86709.jpg

I have cut out the openings ready to receive the 'sliding doors' and filled in the windows with Model-Lite filler, however after sanding smooth I can still feel the framing so intend to cover the sides with 0.010" plasticard before spraying.

1570896443_2020-02-2217_31_44.jpg.f32bd7a0a22d30cb7bb176dd15d08495.jpg

Next step was to form the sliding door blanks

1425725694_2020-02-2311_23_42.jpg.66aab88253a5a9243e2fa858a7c79eaf.jpg

Behind these a further layer to form the window surrounds with one window shown left open.

988800981_2020-02-2311_30_04.jpg.c016bc7e48293f042bbcb51a506aaba0.jpg

Some of the glazing had to be cut back to house the above items closer to the coach face. I took the photos of this stage with another camera Oooops!

The lower aperture is some sort of slanted inset plate so filler has been used to form this.

On my visit to the ELR last weekend this was the only train I saw running and as the weather was bleeding awful this was all I took.

Hi all,

Just had a message from The Railway Touring Co. advising of the 'Cotton Mill Express' running this weekend which is tempting me, I was surprised to see the rostered loco ex: 45699 Galatea has been permanently renumbered and renamed to 45562 Alberta, I failed to see this back in the day as it always seemed to be 45593 Kolhapur which reached Glasgow when I was out and about. The picture of 45562 looks great to be fair.

That'll no doubt get my dad worked up if he ever sees it. Not because he's anything against such renumbering but he grumbled that when he was a kid every other train he saw seemed to be hauled by Alberta (so the model of it was an instant buy for me - appropriate for the S&C too).
