pH
Some photos of Durango and Silverton steam engines taken last week, both operational and 'stuffed and mounted', plus one Rio Grande Southern engine. Rio Grande Southern C-17 Class 2-8-0 #42 in the Durango and Silverton Museum at Durango: I think this is Durango and Silverton K-28 class 2-8-2 #473 in the Durango shops. (I should have been paying a bit more attention!) It was found to have a crack in a tube-plate. It was getting close to a general overhaul, so they decided to bring that forward, and this is now being done. If you look closely, you can see right through the boiler - the new tube-plates are in place, but no tubes have been fitted yet: Durango and Silverton K-28 class 2-8-2 #476 in the Durango and Silverton Museum at Durango: Durango and Silverton K-28 class 2-8-2 #478 in the yard at the Durango shops. This engine was in the shops for attention when #473's general overhaul was brought forward, so 478 was moved out of the shops to make space for 473. Durango and Silverton K-36 class 2-8-2 #480 arriving in Durango from Silverton: Durango and Silverton K-37 class 2-8-2 #498 in the yard at the Durango shops. The guide said this type was not popular, and the engine is being cannabilised for spares for the K36s, and is not likely to run again. (Though he said 'never say never'.) The other Durango and Silverton K-37 class 2-8-2 #493 on display in the yard at Silverton. This engine is not operational.
pH
That thing makes the WHR loco's look anemic!!! Just looking at this topic again. I agree with that comment. Those K-36s have a higher tractive effort than an ex-LMS 8F!
