R A Watson
OldSutt, I returned to work for a plant hire company just around the corner some ten years later (1974) and there were still the remains of some subs there, I think they took the Dai Woodham approach to breaking large things, dealing in ready cut scrap is much easier! Yes they also cut up the occasional surface ship normally on their own side of the river. Jan, Best pub on the Barby, "Billy's " AKA The Dolphin by the time you were there it had been taken over St Austell Breweries who tried to "modernise" it but had to bow to public opinion as to how far they could go with the alterations. There are some who say the place lost its ambience when they steam cleaned the toilets. Wally Ps just a thought after writing that last bit did Stubby ever drink in the Dophin when he lived in Plymouth?

RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted February 5, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 5, 2013 (edited) Good grief, just how the 'old' place has changed. I was transferred from 83D in 1966; 72A for 3 years and then I was scrapped (got married). Hey, ho. P P.S. Old Sutt - would you be an old Sutton High person then? Its really ironic that some of the brand new bullhead rails we installed off the end of the wash plant road towards Friary yard still have their bar code stickers on the heads of the rails!! The only thing to run over them in the 5 years since they were fitted were the roadrailers that lowered them into the chairs!! nat37670
What date was it the 37's ran?? May 3rd 2012. Was the radio signal verification train, checking the signal for the G-SMR system. I believe a FGW class 150/1 is booked over the remains of the Cattewater Branch in a couple months time as some Branchline Railtour... see link; http://www.branchline.org.uk/gw_tracker.pdf Edited February 5, 2013 by nat37670
floss_4
As regards the two flows that are in the pipeline, there are reasons that nothing has happened yet, but we are trying to keep the momentum going, whilst at the same time seeking a sensible, 'joined-up' result (and I use these terms advisedly). What's the current situation with this? I notice Exeter and Truro sidings have been 'tidied up' but nothing at Tavistock Jn yet.
RMweb Gold Re6/6 Posted November 7, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 7, 2013 (edited) This snap came to light after a sort out. 66233 clearing the undergrowth with a train of SSAs collecting scrap from SWM recyling at Cattewater. This train had one of the few remaining Queen Marys at the other end for the propelling shunt back. Taken a few years ago by Pete Archard, the other half of Matford. As far as I can recall the track has now been removed from a point behind the camera to Cattewater Bitumen depot. I'm not sure if it even remains for the scrap yard any more. Does anyone know of any scrap flows there any more? Edited November 7, 2013 by Re6/6
RMweb Premium Kris Posted November 7, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 7, 2013 I don't believe that there are any scrap flows at the moment.
phoenixchris
Just stumbled across this post... Ref Jans post about the submarine that was buried, it's actually underneath my place of work! On the opposite side of the river is Yacht Haven Quay (the old gasworks) - our dry stack marina is built over the top of two old dry docks, one of which holds the remains of an German submarine... As far as I know aren't EMR still loading scrap once a month to go by rail? Cheers Chris

phoenixchris
Ahh ok, does anyone know where the scrap that has been running out of Tavistock yard lately has been originating from? I just assumed it was local loading

RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted November 8, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 8, 2013 What's the current situation with this? I notice Exeter and Truro sidings have been 'tidied up' but nothing at Tavistock Jn yet. Exeter Riverside is (mostly) NR infrastructure, as is Truro Yard, and have both been tidied up in recent times. Tavistock Jct is a DB Schenker Yard, with the exception of four 'Networked' sidings (ie. NR infrastructure) at the back of the office block, which are currently used for on-track plant, rail grinding train stabling etc.
mason
Hi Do you have a track plan of the branch and the bituman laoding sidings by any chance?? Thanks Neil
RMweb Gold Re6/6 Posted January 6, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 6, 2014 Neil, I don't have a track plan, but I do have a few shots taken from the cliffs above which may be of help. You can get a good Idea of the layout from them. I'll dig them out later today and put them up.

RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted May 13, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 13, 2014 (edited) And here are some of my shots taken in connection with that trip... The unit arrives from the Laira direction: First of all, running towards the end of the line at Friary: Group shot! On the way now to Cattewater: The end of the line: Ready to start back: Looking back towards Laira, as we pass the site of Lucas Terrace Halt: Time for me to leave the train, prior to it starting back to Mount Gould Jct, Lipson Jct and Plymouth station: The train departs Plymouth Friary: After this it was time to drive up to Exeter to join 1Z52, which is described on another thread... bgman
Hi KC, Good photos, slightly envious Whilst waiting for the 1Z52, I met a chap on Exeter St.Davids who told me about the trip and nearly missed the Castle on its run through!! Note to self " stop talking to enthusiastic strangers about trains and concentrate upon the mission in hand!" Cheers
RMweb Gold Re6/6 Posted May 14, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 14, 2014 Thanks for the link Geoff and to CK for the snaps. It's a shame that the rest of the branch has now gone, but if it hadn't, I doubt that a unit would have been allowed right down there!
