RMweb Gold westerhamstation Posted February 15, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 15, 2013 The builders have gone. so I thought i would see what the Railway terrace looked like in situ, it still needs a load of work doing to get it to sit right in its new home, and sort the road and landscaping around it. also I dont know if I should make small back gardens or as space is tight go for backyards. I have only quickly plonked the terrace in position and still need to finish off the drain pipes and gutters on the rear of the building.

RMweb Gold westerhamstation Posted February 15, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 15, 2013 I've just found your work on here. Your layout is beautiful, and you are so fast as well! Thank you, the reason for the relatively speedy progress is I have most of the day as I am retired now. and enjoy the modelling side of the hobby, other aspects such as wiring the layout take me forever with little discernible progress. RMweb Gold westerhamstation Posted February 16, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 16, 2013 (edited) If the builders had been a real problem you could have called in that BBC morning programe about cowboy builders !!!!! The layout is brilliant I admire someone who can model a real location its so easy to make a location up and not worry about if you got a detail wrong. Thank you for your comments, he really winds me up the bloke on cowboy builders, like most of the them on daytime tv. Thank goodness for railway modelling, The fun of modelling a real location for me, is the different details you find out, which most of the time have nothing to do with what you are actual trying to make. That's so true. I've learnt so much more about my home town, and in fact my family since I started my project. I didn't realise that the research stage could be so interesting. RMweb Gold westerhamstation Posted February 17, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 17, 2013 The sun is out, spring is in the air, so I thought I might have a run down to Westerham to do a bit of gardening at railway terrace. Jumped on the old Lambretta and set off. Passed Biggin Hill airfield, a stop at the Salt Box, for a coffee seemed in order but it was full of Ton Up boys, guessed they might not take kindly to a scooter in their midst, passed the Nightingale cafe that was full of bikes as well. Reached the the top of Westerham Hill, and saw a couple of lads on push bikes struggling to climb the hill, mind you they were doing better than an old Ford pop with a family of four in it. so flying down westerham hill passed Pilgrims Way. and just as I got to Westerham station with the Crown Hotel on my right hand side, the traffic was stopped and queuing, possibly due to the special constable controlling the traffic at the junction of London road and the A25.but I only had a few yards to go, before turning left, into the road down to the goods yard and railway terrace and a nice spot of gardening. Oh dear!

RMweb Gold westerhamstation Posted February 23, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 23, 2013 In the Kentish Times, they were advertising 5 bob joy ride flights from Biggin Hill this weekend, in a De havilland Rapide. so I thought why not, I have never been in a plane before. My luck was in we flew right over Westerham station, I had my box brownie with me and managed to get a snap. Watch out Biggles.
cromptonnut
Nice to see 'google earth' style photos of the layout, which obvioulsly we can't as the station is no longer there. Still very impressed with this layout
RMweb Gold westerhamstation Posted February 25, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 25, 2013 Westerham Valley Railway. Are pleased to announce the resumption of regular train services to Dunton Green and beyond. I finally managed to get the loco and carriages out of it's box without breaking it. ( scalpel, razor saw, swearing etc:) here are a few pictures of it on the line. Its all clean and new, which begs the question am i brave enough to weather it. I am not at all sure.
RMweb Gold westerhamstation Posted March 8, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 8, 2013 (edited) I put a post up for information regarding the Warehouse next to Railway Terrace. And waited for the replies to come flooding in,none came. So being an impatient sort of chap I decide to press on with building it, using the one clear picture of it that I had, that was my first mistake. As soon as i had finished it, the replies came in, I was referred to a article in British Railways Illustrated vol4 No4 jan 1995.O-joy My building was not the same as in the pictures in the magazine. Its got loads of pictures of Westerham Valley Railway a track plan, pictures of the warehouse from various angles in fact everything I needed to know when I first started building my layout. Wish I had seen this before I started!!! So much for the internet it knows nothing compared with you fellows. It seems that the Warehouse was rebuilt some time after 1947,its a bit like playing spot the difference Doors, gangplank, windows, changed /removed,chimney added the list goes on,so not knowing what the roadside of the building looked like I decided on a compromise, and kept that as it was, and changed the rail side and end of the warehouse, to try and capture a feel of the the building which is a mix of both eras of the warehouse Any way here are some pictures of the modified warehouse, and one of the nightmare which is the underside of my baseboard. RMweb Gold westerhamstation Posted March 14, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 14, 2013 Meanwhile back at Westerham, Its a sunny day and a spot of planting in the garden is the order of the day at Railway Terrace. And when I have done that, Its time to hang the washing out. No pub for me today The paths have been laid using some scrap from the modifications to the warehouse nothing gets wasted in my era. Making pegs was beyond my eyesight, so good old pva, was used to hang the washing out, (I don't recommend this for full size washing). Do I need to put more washing on the other lines or is this enough just to give it a feel. It still needs a few more bits of clutter in the yards like dustbins etc.
cromptonnut
It's the little details like washing on the line that you don't even spot at first that really bring it to life.
RMweb Gold westerhamstation Posted March 14, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 14, 2013 What's shall I do on the other side of the bridge? Fiddle Yard, or carry on to Brasted Station all suggestions welcome.
cromptonnut
If you have the space, I'd always vote for "carry on" Especially if the standards so far are maintained...

I will try to put a plan together, and what space may be available subject to negotiations with the relevant authorities, to show you what I am thinking of. john flann
To attempt to model a real location is an admirable intent and you seem to be pulling it off. I particularly like the warehouse that has just the right atmosphere about it. And yes, getting those M7's out of the box is some task. It makes me wonder how they got them in in the first place. RMweb Gold westerhamstation Posted March 15, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 15, 2013 Thanks John. The warehouse did cause me some problems, but not as many as the wiring seems to be giving me
Bulleidnutter
Definetly continue! If space is there, why not keep heading towards Dunton Green? Maybe throw in a OO works H tank and some Roxey SECR push pull coaches?
RMweb Gold westerhamstation Posted March 15, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 15, 2013 Definetly continue! If space is there, why not keep heading towards Dunton Green? Maybe throw in a OO works H tank and some Roxey SECR push pull coaches? To get to Dunton Green is a nice thought, but space, time and resources prohibit such a venture, not to mention the wife, I know I would be on to a loser before I even started.I still have a fair amount of work on Westerham to finish. but will content myself with planning onwards to Brasted. This may take quite a while, but should be fun if I learn from all my previous mistakes but i doubt it.
RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted March 15, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 15, 2013 In them thar days, I'm certain that the inn-sign at Brasted on the A25 said "Pull in to the Bull Inn". If you are enjoying the scenic aspects of the layout - as we are! - then proceeding further looks good. Increased operational scope as a result of an extension appears limited, however. Only you know what motivates you.
