E3109
I've been playing a little with these, on and off. I broke Rule No1 by starting something before a previous project is finished, mind you I'm always doing that. Here's the original, and its twin. The second engine will be the later, modified version with grilles cut into the lower bodyside etc, allowances have been made for this at initial construction stage. My, how useful those Triang/Hornby Mk1 roofs are, when spliced down the middle.... You will notice that I've (sensibly) binned the old school Hornby class 58 chassis, in favour of Athearn (PA-1). The eagle-eyed will notice that I've reamed a couple of Mainline Peak wheelsets onto the Athearn stub axles, as they're close to correct size. Not sure how this will pan out, and I've kept the originals just in case.... Photos: Edited May 12, 2017 by E3109
whart57
This is one thread I wish I had known about ages ago, but not being a regular on RMWeb I missed it My interest is in Thai railways, which I am building to 3mm scale on 9mm gauge track. My layout is based on Bangkok's Thonburi station, though I have no intention of making an exact copy of that. Some of you might have seen the articles I wrote for Continental Modeller a few years ago, which I hope some people will find useful at some point. At the moment I have a GE 4000 class and an Alstholm completed, with another Alstholm near completion. I also have a couple of third class coaches built and have the etches for another five. I have resin casts for four wheeled freight vans and I have a trio of BCFs as well. I am working on container flats and fuel tankers as my layout also takes in the Khlong Thoei branch to Mae Nam (near the Rama IV road and the Thai boxing stadium in Lumphini), as Thonburi has no freight these days. I'm thinking of calling the layout Maenamburi! I try to avoid scratch building and most of my stuff is etched brass done to my artwork. The reason I came across this thread is that I have asked someone to do a 3D print job of the Thai 158 (he already does the BR version so it's a mod rather than a complete new item, but the beauty of 3D printing is that mods are relatively simple to do compared to other technologies). What he needs is some pics of the roof in order to get the aircon and other grilles right, so if anyone has any shots of a Thai Sprinter taken from above, can they post them here please? Thanks Wim
whart57
I should share some pics I started scratchbuilding some vans, but that was too time consuming so my first shortcut was to make a mould of the four wheel van body and cast it in resin. My first loco was this Alsthom - construction was described in CM For my next loco I went for a hybrid resin cast/etched brass construction. This is now completed and fitted with a Loksound DCC chip and speaker Wim
jpachl
Wim, As a TT scale modeller, it's great news that somebody is working on a Thai layout in 3 mm scale. Are there some more photos of your layout avaible online? Joern
whart57
Layout is not far enough advanced for photographs as yet. All track is laid and tested and wiring is complete (Don't let anyone tell you DCC is just two wires!) But ballasting is still only half done and ground cover even less. I have three buildings under construction (one of Thonburi station building and one of the Starbucks on Thanon Langsuan ) and am currently working on the station platforms (can't ballast the platform roads until that's done) Wim
whart57
Track btw, is PECO code 60 FB rail (sold for OO gauge modellers to model SR third rail electrification) on copper clad sleepers. No cheating and using N gauge track!

Thanks Wim Great to see the Thai models. I think I might have got some pictures of the roof of a 158 in Bangkok. I think I got a couple of shots from the bridge where the first couple of clips in this youtube video I found were taken https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyOLptvbxtQ The above film only has a side shot at 8min30sec and some shots in the works towards the end Am away at present but will check once home again Edited August 4, 2017 by Ryde-on-time
whart57
Ah yes, watching the pilot - usually the rustiest GE UM12C on the railway - loose shunting carriages from the Rama I road bridge. Great fun. Nice shots of a rake of the ex-Queensland Railway carriages near the end. An Aussie friend sent me a scan from an old QR stock book which I need to turn into a drawing of the Thai modified version. Great to see the Thai models. I think I might have got some pictures of the roof of a 158 in Bangkok. Supaned
Yes, I can see why so many SRT coaches are banana shaped having seen (and ridden on) the shunt moves at Hua Lamphong. Still , those ratty GEs still keep on motoring

E3109
Hello Wim I followed your CM articles with great interest, by the way much obliged for your Alsthom drawing, I think you said the line drawing produced by Mr Raemer was inaccurate, so it's your version I've been using for my ALS model. By the way I scaled both yours and Mr Raemer's drawings up to 1:64 via the work's photocopier, got pretty much all of the diesels underway now. Steam will be a greater challenge, but I will have one or two eventually no doubt. Likely to be a Japanese Mogul and maybe a MacArthur. I will post some photos later, but this is what I've got underway at present: Hunslet 0-6-0 shunt engine (Mainline 03 as a basis) 5xx Bo-Bo Davenport (2 off, and a chassis for one more) (Athearn SW1500 as a basis) 1958 Hitachi Co-Co (Airfix Class 31 as a basis) GE GEK 40xx (2 off, again Athearn chassis but Co-Co. Ex Alco PA) 41xx Alsthom (Hornby class 58, double-motored) GE 45xx (Hornby class 92 body, extended. Maybe I'll use the 92 chassis too, unsure yet). Also working on a 1:64 Class 158T, it's at the early stages so not worth posting the pics of it right now. Also a few C+W items in the pipeline. Got some Cambodian and Malayan traction on the way too...

Thanks Wim Wim I was provided with some roof pics of a 158T from an SRT boss a few years ago, upon request. I think he was 'Chief of Railcars' or something like that! I'll go and have a look for the CDs now, hopefully I can post the relevant photos shortly. Also bear in mind that the underframe kit on the 158T is different to the BR 158. Some components are similar but some are not. EDIT: Found the CDs, but my DVD/CD drive refuses to open.... Give me a few days, I'll use a different device. E3109
As I can't open the CD player, instead I've attached some underframe photos from a few years ago. Note that 158Ts have a narrow gauge version of what's basically a class 150/156 bogie. Plenty of shots on my Flickr page here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/barang_shkoot/albums/72157629781644838/page1
E3109
Some old Lima Class 33 bodies have finally found a use... I seem to be breeding these little Davenports, they're very easy to make compared to other locos!

whart57
Plenty of shots on my Flickr page here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/barang_shkoot/albums/72157629781644838/page1 I've had a chance to look through your Flickr page and taken the liberty of forwarding the link to the second page on to the 158 guy as there is a pic sort of from above on it. I'd still be interested in the official roof shots if possible. I'm surprised that in your comprehensive collection that you have only one shot of an ex-Queensland carriage. That's my next rolling stock project, and I'm hoping to use my Silhouette cutter to do something other than bits for model buildings. If you have more shots I'd appreciate them - interior ones especially. Wim
whart57
Got some Cambodian and Malayan traction on the way too... I spent a month using the "Komuter" from KL Sentral to Batu Tiga. E3109
Wim A long time ago, I found a website which went through the history of the ex Queensland SX stock - and I'm fairly sure it had dimensioned line drawings included. Can't find it right now, although I did have a quick look. First time I visited Thailand was 2004, and the SX stock was all stainless finish, i.e. unpainted, nowadays the carriages have yellow ends and green window panels. I may build a couple eventually, as the BR Mk1 Commonwealth bogie scales up reasonably well for this stock in 'Sm' scale/gauge. Feel free to save pics for your own use off my Flickr page, and once again I'll try to post the 158 roof detail shots soon, perhaps next week. Cheers

whart57
I reckon that would be a nice project for someone that has a Silhouette cutter. Unfortunately Thonburi (actually Bangkok Noi) has a simple shack, which I have already built. If you live out in Thailand and fancy a small project, producing a drawing and photos would probably tickle the fancy of Andrew Burnham over at Continental Modeller. I also need some decent roof shots of the BREL 158 Sprinters, if one ever passes while you are standing on a footbridge .........
