My detailing/repainting projects

Recommended Posts

I was looking at those cabinet images on flickr and wondering about it... I'm guessing it's all a self-built project (?) or is it an adaptation of a bought one... 'cause it looks very nice. You're getting lots of work done too... well done!

Jon

P.S. I see you got some enamel thinners too; despite a good rummage, they only had cellulose thinners in the Crawley one last week, but yes, I bought some paints glues and glue accelerator... the 50% offer is worth using although the 10 to 20% on everything else is less enticing although they said that it did mean that stock was shifting - nothing on Hornby or scalextric ('cause they don't own the stock do they!)

Cheers guys. Jon, the cabinet is built buy myself. Offcuts of plywood for the main carcase, a sheet of clear perspex for the front cover, and some bargain led strip lights purchased ages ago from Maplins, for 'one of those projects.'

Knew they would come in handy!!

I have started work on the big 40. I know this model is getting on a bit, and a new one is on the way, but it still captures the bulk of these huge lumbering beasts, and by the time it has some detailing and a bit of weathering, it's going to look pretty decent.
Today I added the sound decoder and 2 speakers. 1 in the under chassis tanks, and 1 under the fan. It sounds pretty decent. I'll post a few pictures of the work so far in a bit, but here's a video for now.

I particularly like these light kits, nice and yellow, perfect for blue locomotives!

Everything going well, the only little issue I have just twigged on is the fact I am going to have to shave off a bit of the metal chassis nose ends to get the body back on   :scratchhead:

Angle grinder anyone?

Not often I have to use a bit of muscle with these projects, but removing metal from the nose ends of the 40 chassis got the hacksaw out   :triniti:

Whilst I was at it, I decided to carry out yet more butchering, and improve the body to bogie gap.

The properly flush with the roofline etched fan grilles look so much better than the strangely recessed Hornby efforts.

Hi Lee,

Some epic work in a very short space of time!  You might have changed my opinion on replacement etched grills for RTR 4mm scale diesel/electric model locos: those on the class 56 are very neatly done indeed.

All the best,

Colin

Thank you Colin.

The 56 roof fan grilles have always bugged me as they just look so wrong out of the box from Hornby, they are recessed by approximately six inches when converted to prototype dimensions. I will have to do my whole fleet. The only other problem it now raises is showing just how crude the mesh is on the bodyside and cant line grilles, it just so happens I have a complete set from Shawplan to have a play with! But just how far do we take this detailing malarkey?

I think you've only got to compare a before and after for the roof fans on a Bachmann 47 to see how much of an improvement the etched parts can provide.... there are numerous suppliers out there but it's hard to beat Brian's EE range

Hi Lee,

Just thought I'd drop by and catch up on your progress. Great stuff as always.

It's always good to see what you've been up to for the past week or so. It's often very similar to what I have planned for the next ten years.

Cheers,
Dave

Hi Lee.

Are the class 40 bogies the original Bachmann ones? I have 6 Lima bodies to do when I can get the time and was considering using the Lima sideframes as they appear to me to have a lot more "chunk" to them, but yours seem to look good to me.

Also, I don't really like the DRS class 37 chassis. Something looks wrong about it to me.....

;o)

Sean.

Surprising how many bits and pieces are seperately fitted to locos these days. Especially so when you have to put the back on again!

Along with the etched roof grilles, the 56 has had some Shawplan etched horn grilles fitted.

Nearing completion, just about ready for weathering and varnishing.

again now awaiting detail refitting before weathering, these transfers have been the hardest thing to do so far. Still not sitting 100% quite right.

All very nice Lee. I'm not ever going to attempt to keep up with your pace... but picking up on the comments previously (from Colin) about the etch grills, here's a pic of a before and after Class 47 roof fan set up... the new ones are very fragile but treated with the necessary respect their a "must-do" for any project.

... and yes, my long term 47/4 project is not too far from the home straight now.

I find the large transfer is pretty easy to apply - just keep it fairly moist with water and a thin application of microsol, until you're happy with it's position. The use a bit more microslol and gradually push the transfer around the raised detail using neat microsol. Then leave for 24 hours. Also needs patience, as it can take 2-3 days and 4-5 applications of microsol to gently stretch the large decal into place over the raised detail.

Cheers,

Mick

Not a great deal done yesterday, domestic chores to the fore   :stinker:

Anyways, after receiving the rhtt wagons through the post, and looking like the Royal Mail had played football with them, I straightened all of the handrails, glued them all back on, added cant rail lining to all of the boxes and tanks, and fixed them onto the wagons. Now ready for weathering.

The stripping bath has been back in action, I sold 47301, and it's getting redone as 47407, 'Aycliffe'. The 37 is one of the older Bachmann bodies, she is getting redone as 678 in construction.

Hello.

First time commenter here. As others have said, marvellous work etc. and a real inspiration. Perhaps one day I'll be able to turn out 2mm diesels (and electrics and rolling stock) to the same standard.

What has made me push my head above the parapet was post #347 (the Class 67). We see the new numbers on the bodyside (030) but the end picture clearly shows the original number (001). There is a picture of a renumbered end in a subsequent post, but did you renumber both ends? I would assume that you did, but you never know... :-)

Hope this helps,

David.
