My detailing/repainting projects

Recommended Posts

Lee... hope you got the pm.... here's my 47 in a very cruel close up. I really must clean up that aluminium paint

Hope the PM and the above is of some inspiration.

And here is Jon's Response.

Hi Lee, thanks for the thought, but I've got to be honest, I'm not the 47 guy... I'm just doing what I see fit in response to each engineering challenge I hit... current project is a 47, so yes, I guess I've had to learn a "bit".

But.... your issue. Hmmm. well, to be honest, I'd go for what you said you didn't want to do.... but practice maybe? For my 47, I had to cut the hole in the end to fit glazing, which I've done cutting a piece of clear plastic (thin stuff used to pack out collars in shirts... M&S ones anyway)... and have trial n error filed and smoothed this to shape. However, my 47 was a little more detailed in that it had the step down... and then step again for the glazing to sit in. there is still a bit of a gap that the klear hasn't filled, but I think it'll blend in when it's all coated with a little front end grime... that's my hope anyway. I was unsure whether this would actually work... but I think it's ok. To be honest, once the headcode panel is fitted in from behind, the eye is drawn to the digits rather than the glazing frame (hope hope hope). I'm just back from a business trip and I'll see if I can grab a photo to include in the next blog update that I drafted whilst doing the billy-no-mates thing stuck in a hotel miles from civilisation on the outskirts of Cambridge last night - oh well... at least Star Trek was on TV... again!

As for yours ... looking again, you might need an outer frame, with an inner lip into which the glazing can sit... or glaze it and then add a frame around it to hide and gaps (plasticard)... it's a tricky one. TBH, I've shied away from the tubby duff... which is a shame because in isolation they just look "right"... and it's taken me quite a bit of effort to get the Bachmann one sufficiently close.

Although you work at lightning speed, why not do this slow time (if you can) and have a play with a few ideas, you might be surprised when you hit upon a solution using glazing and a frame (or something) ... or overall glaze and paint a frame???? part of the fun is finding a workable solution to an engineering problem... at least, that's what keeps me (relatively) sane .

As I said... feel free to post this on your thread if you think it might be of interest... I think it'll be nice to see ideas develop  ;)

Jon

I do really like the 'tubby duffs', they have lovely chassis and really sit well on the layout. I will have a go with shaping plasticard for the aperture, but I just feel it won't look spot on sitting next to other duffs with properly moulded marker boxes. Ho hum.

The 47 is very much a fave of mine and Jon that close up looks very good. I wouldnt worry myself if I were you. You should try N close ups!!! I have to disagree with the Heljan duff thing though. I hate them tbh. To me they look very wrong, the tubbiness is one thing but for me its the awful front cab windows. They are the wrong shape altogether and the body is too flat across the windows too. Should be slightly more 'pointed' if thats the word. For me the Vi trains is still the one Id choose with bachy close behind.

Had a crack at doing some Shawplan roof fans today.

Not bad for my 1st attempt!

37081 and 56133 completely finished.

I have used 'Railtec' transfers for the 1st time on these locos, and they seem to be really good quality. Fox are starting to get a bit too pricey for my liking.

DRS pair finished.

Hiya, yes, Shawplan do a full range of just about any detailing part you can think of for most of the diesel fleet that ever ran. Give Brian a ring, he's very helpful and will sort you out. As regards 31 cabs, I guess you would have to obtain a suitable body and cut em off?

More detailing work. Really getting a taste for these Shawplan bits.
This is Bachmann's 40 windscreen out of the box. Slightly the wrong shape, and very thick pillars. so, out with the files.....

A test fit of the new etch.

Sprayed the etches whilst doing a bit more filing.

Still yet more fettling required, but looking better. These are getting glazed with Extreme Etchings laserglaze.

Next it's onto replacing the roof fan.

This is the cover that is so fine it distorts as you pick it up. I closed my eyes whilst gluing it down......

Oddly roof grilles would be pretty much invisible at 2mm scale in any case. Always makes me smile when people omit ohle wires arguing that you wouldnt see them and then run locos with roof grilles. The wire on a roof grille is about 3mm to 5mm diameter an OHLE wire is about 15mm. Go figure. I wouldnt omit any of the two tbh. Anyway I digress. Im very tempted to have a go.

Some big beasties photographed outside on the diorama today. Apologies about the bridge sides, they fell off :scratchhead: Dodgy engineering department. Don't worry, I'm finally getting around to bulding new bridge supports, so soon the scenery can begin!

For now, all I have done to 97403 is given her a light weathering. Prototype photographs show she never got really dirty.

The 40 has had it's wiring properly installed, and I have added some connectors so the body can easily be disconnected..

And a few shots of her, work in progress out enjoying the sun!
Wish I could find some better mu connectors than those huge overscale things hanging off the bogie sides. Any suggestions?

Is this really such a bad model?

New window frames attached in this view, I have trial glazed them, but I ain't really happy with them yet. Practise practise. The different blue will vanish when we get to the weathering stage.

Hi Lee,

Nice lot of models under way there.

As a matter of interest, how many coats of yellow paint did you use to get good coverage on the 08/09 cab?

Is that a Cambrian or Flangeways Mermaid in the background on the turntable by the way?

All the best,

Colin
