Freightliner Container Traffic - photos from the NRM

I'll dig the NLL book out but my best guess is the train is exiting Maiden Lane, West on to the NLL where it'll cross on to the line third from right which would be the Westbound goods line on the NLL.

Checked the book and the train is exiting Maiden Lane terminal on to the NLL. The train 47 has just crossed the Midland Main line, the retaining wall of which can just be seen above the caboose unit. There was a West to South curve from the passenger lines which gave access into St Pancras/ Somers Town Goods, this would be to the right of the photographer. Maiden Lane box was at the end of the line the 47 is on.

The goods lines had no third rail but the Eastbound line had a short stretch east of Camden Rd to allow passenger trains to pass freight trains waiting on the Eastbound passenger line to access the curve, this is the second from top line in the pic. The date is troubling though, the book claims that 25kv overhead was installed in 1965 from the WCML link at Primrose Hill, through Camden Rd Jct and into Maiden Lane depot, but there's no sign of any overhead in this pic.

The overhead was short lived in operation, Maiden Lane Freightliner closed in June 1968 and the overhead was de-energised in 1971. It remained in situ (There's a pic of Camden Rd with a named class 50 in the book) and was re-used in the NLL electrification.

Resurrecting an old topic, on a recent wander round the NRM, I found that the Freightliner caboose 09Z04 has been painted up, along with another container, on a pair of original "outer" FGA wagons. It's at the very northern tip of the public areas beyond the station hall.

It's good to know that the NRM isn't just letting it rot away. Actually it would be even better if the NRM set up a display that showed the evolution of container traffic on the UK railways, with some of the later designs and sizes of containers. Perhaps they could even grab those Mini Link containers that are sitting in the yard at Warrington Arpley!
