Whilst Will has been busy cracking on with the points, I have managed to do a bit of work on the silos. This evening I have assembled the boxes that sit under the silos on the platform.

Here they are with the hoppers inside.

Hopefully, subject to the weather, we can get the boxes and hoppers primed and painted this weekend.

Evening all,

Tonight I have done a little bit of track cutting, but that has been suspended until the joiners arrive. Also the MERG servo controllers have arrived, which will be used to control the servos underneath the points. Hopefully we will be able to get them put in place by the end of the Christmas holidays. Finally I have taken a few photos of 60040 at Southwich:

Any feedback is much appreciated,

Thanks,

Hi all,

Tonight has been spent by putting together the MERG servo controller which will be used to control the servos, instead of using point motors. A few photos of the board:

Also I have cut most of the track to length, including the points. Pics to follow:

Evening all,

Thanks, David and class60lover.

No work has been done on the layout today, however I have taken more photos of stock on the point work and on the main line section.

  • 2 weeks later...

Over the past few days I have been working on toning down and weathering the hopper and surrounding boxes. At the moment they look far too clean and pristine! First off some dirt was added to both:

Then the hoppers had a couple of washes of Railmatch concrete applied on top of the dirt, although the photo does not really show it off that well:

This afternoon the boxes and hoppers had a further toning down using some Mig weathering powders.

Once the weather finally dries up, well if it does, then I can get a coat of Matt varnish applied before getting the boxes added to the silos. Then the silos can be sprayed concrete colour.

Well last night I swapped skylights for silos......

Since the last update I have given the hoppers and boxes a coat of matt varnish. Then two washes of Railmatch concrete were added over the top of the dirt.

Some poor planning and thinking on my part has seen the platforms glued on to the silo legs meaning that the hoppers and boxes cannot be added!

What an idiot I am........last night the platforms were carefully removed in order to allow them to be reused. Luckily I had a couple of spares if needed but in the end only one got slightly damaged during removal. What a relief.

I took the opportunity last night to offer up the hopper and box to one of the silos to see how it looked:

Tonight we plan to prepare the silos and platforms for spraying and subject to the weather, give them a coat of grey primer tomorrow. Then hopefully get the top coat of concrete colour added over the weekend.

The past couple of evenings have been spent working on producing some sort of representation for what lies underneath the silo platform. I have searched the internet and have not found anything that could really help. So a bit of modeller’s licence has been used.

Last night I made up some doors on rails in order to have something underneath the silo platform, although I am not even sure that you will be able to see them! At least there will be something there....

Here is a photo of one set:

I am looking forward to seeing the silos painted. Fingers crossed we can get them painted over the weekend.

Thanks.

With another dry day in the offing, we took full advantage and sprayed the silos with Plastikote suede:

Then inside to dry:

The silos need a bit of toning down with some weathering but I am looking forward to seeing the hoppers and boxes added. Next up is to spray two rings of each silo light blue before starting on the weathering.

Yesterday evening I finished toning down the silos and they now resemble a nice uneven concrete colour and texture. Next up is to paint the two bands light blue and then give it a faded blue look. Then following that a few washes of dirt and grime ready for getting the platform and hoppers added.

Progress, albeit slow.....

This afternoon I managed to get the blue bands sprayed on the five silos.

Last night the preparation ahead of spraying commenced. First of all the grooves either side and in between the two bands were covered in Maskol to protect the weathering. Then this afternoon ahead of spraying the rest of the silo was masked up. We were very wary of getting paint on the rest of the silos, so every effort was made to make sure that the silos were properly masked up and covered.

Here they are before spraying:

After the two bands had been sprayed:

Tomorrow I plan to give the two bands a couple of washes to fade and tone them down. Then I can give all the silos a wash of weathered black before finally assembling them.

I am looking forward to seeing how the assembled silos look on the layout.

Yesterday evening I added a couple of washes to the two blue bands on each silo. After leaving them to dry for a while I removed the masking tape and Maskol.
This was done very carefully, I feared that once removed I would see some blue paint underneath but thankfully this was not the case!

Hopefully this week I can tidy the edges of the blue bands up before giving the silos a wash of weathered black. Then the platform, hoppers and boxes can be added. Once all that has been done we can get the walkway on the top and ladders and pipes added.

Here they are, although they appear much darker in the photos:

12174214523_20eab8c304.jpg

These are a bit better but still not as light as they are in reality:

12174396314_97b3a0016d.jpg

12174396694_bc254781cf.jpg

They are beginning to take shape now, hopefully by the end of the week I will have more progress to show.

Whilst helping me with the brass work for Boxenby, Grimley Senior brought around his Compact Point Assembly to show us. This contains; the micro servo, 2 micro switches, actuator for the stretcher bar and a six-way plug enabling “plug and play”.
Very impressive!
These assemblies will be used on the three points on New Southwich and all the points on Boxenby.

Once the silos are ready for the pipe work to be added we can start getting the track down and wired up.
