New Southwich

Evening all,

Tonight I have been out to the "train room" to continue with the wiring. As well as wiring I have taken numerous photos and recorded a rather belated update video. Over the next few days, with the help of my grandad, aka Grimley senior, I will be building the fiddle yards and hopefully putting up the back scenes. Photos and videos to follow:

Evening all!

I have been very busy today with my grandad building the two 5ftx2ft fiddle yards, which now sit on two more trestles in the train room. The far end fiddle yard has all the track pinned down and dropper wires soldered on ready to be wired up tomorrow morning. The second scenic board is also ready to be wired up properly, so hopefully can have a train running from one fiddle yard to the other by the end of tomorrow. Photos to follow of baseboard construction as well as the first train running on new Southwich!

Firstly the fiddle yards were dry fitted:

Next we glued them together using wikes adhesive wood glue:

Then the screws were drilled in the previously countersunk holes:

Finally photos and video of the whole layout:

Hopefully tomorrow I can finish the wiring on the layout.

Any feedback is much appreciated,

Thanks,

Will

Evening all!

Today I have finished the fiddle yards by wiring them up. I have brought the power into a chocolate box then sent the power of in four different wires to four separate chocolate boxes, one for each board's power. The joins in the boards created a large problem for me to transfer the power from one to the next, however this was overcome by using 3 pin connectors provided by my grandad, (grimley senior), which include a plug and socket which dangle beneath the boards. Photos to follow of the fiddle yards and a video of trains running on the layout:

I'm having problems uploading the video at the moment so will edit in the link hopefully tomorrow after it has uploaded.

Any feedback is much appreciated,

Thanks,

Will

Evening all!

Thanks for all the positive comments, they are much appreciated! There hasn't been much work over the last few days due to the running of trains, but hopefully I will be able to get the back scenes up tomorrow. Tonight I have bolted on the end buffer piece to stop any run away trains! This took an hour to do as I split the wood, which had to be repaired, as well as enlarging the holes for the bolts. The vibrations were a right pain to control, so I had to hold the boards down to limit the vibrations. Photos to follow of the buffer at the end of the fiddle yard:

Hopefully I will have a layout update out by the end of next week.

Any feedback is much appreciated,

Thanks,

Will

Evening all!

Tonight I have finally finished construction on the layout! All the boards are together for the first time with the back scenes on. Many thanks to my dad, grimley grid and my Grandad, grimley senior for all their help. The back scenes need to be painted again, as well as having the holes where the screws are filled. Tomorrow I plan on making an experimental board to practice the ballasting on, we will see how that turns out! I now have other scenic items such as trees, clump foliage, relay boxes and orange pipes all waiting to be added to the layout! Pictures to follow of the layout:

Something different: scenic board/programming track.

Evening all,

Over the last few days I have been producing a scenic board, which I will use to photograph future rolling stock projects, and to programme locos.

First off I created the frame for the bottom of the board:

I marked out and drilled the holes for the screws to make the frame, then added Wickes wood glue to make sure when I screwed the frame together it wouldn't move! After making the frame I added the side scenes and back scenes. Next I added the bed for the track as I planned to have a hill side either side of the track, which can be seen here:

After adding the track bed, with the help of my dad (grimley grid) I've redone the wire mesh for the paper mâché base for the hillside:

Finally I've taken photos of the first loco on the board:

Any feedback is much appreciated!

Thanks,

Will

Whilst helping Will program some locos earlier, I suddenly thought........

New Southwich in the late eighties/early nineties, oh yeah baby!

Now that's more like it, a 31 on PCAs, lovely. I have been saying to Will that the layout would look great set in that period. I know that it is his layout but he just needs a bit of guidance now and again!
