RMweb Gold mudmagnet Posted January 8, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 8, 2015 Extension looks good, but the track does seem close to the edge. Have you considered an edging strip to prevent accidental knocking of stock onto the floor?
RBE
Like the idea of the extension. The track could do with straightening a bit though. Looks like a US backwater line! Nice 37 btw
Grimleygrid
Don’t worry Cav, I will have him aligning each sleeper individually this evening, measuring accurately to make sure that they are perfectly in line and straight! OCD time!
Southwich
Thanks Cav, David, Class 66 and MudMagnet. I like the idea MudMagnet but I still need to access the track for the moment so I will add that later on. Tonight I have taken some more photos of the extension, as well as making a start on redoing the fiddle yard and straightening the track. RMweb Gold mudmagnet Posted January 9, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 9, 2015 Looks good Will. The strip doesn't need to too high, but I take your point about reaching the back.
sdw7300
Hi Will Loving your progress. The extension is looking good. Regarding Ballasting. I have ballasted and weathered a short section of my layout and it's come out looking reasonable close to the picture Cav posted (post 216 - thanks Cav, that was a useful reference picture) A couple of photos here http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/76254-laoson-valley-1990s-to-modern-day-tmd-oil-terminal-p-way-yard/page-8&do=findComment&comment=1735890 I used a 50:50 mix of Gaugemaster grey granite and Woodland Scenic medium light grey blend. Weathering was a few light sprays of 75:25 mix of Railmatch Sleeper Grime and Frame Dirt. Hope this helps

Grimleygrid
As Will has mentioned, yesterday we started building the warehouse which will be another feature of the layout. This warehouse is based on a building which sits behind the terminal at Northenden, whilst not an exact replica it will form a nice back drop. The main parts of the warehouse have been laser cut, so we needed an inner structure to allow the pieces to be assembled. We did not want any warping or bowing of the roof so a wooden frame was decided upon using ply wood and wooden battens. The first job was to print off some templates, these were used for help with cutting the pieces to make the wooden frame. 5 mm ply wood was used, two pieces of the ply wood were nailed together and a template stuck down using tape. Then using a jig saw, I cut around the edge of the template. Having two pieces of ply wood nailed together would hopefully allow the cut parts to be identical, in theory! The inner frame consisted of two end pieces and two inner walls, all joined together using 6mm x 6mm wooden battens, glued and pinned in position. Here are a few photos, that will hopefully allow members to better understand the structure and process! The template for the end pieces: image by AP474, on Flickr The end pieces after being cut out using a jig saw, the two are still nailed together: image by AP474, on Flickr The template for the two inner walls, shown taped too the 5mm ply wood: image by AP474, on Flickr The inner pieces after being cut out: image by AP474, on Flickr A bit of filing and preparation required but nearly ready: image by AP474, on Flickr The 6mm x 6mm wooden battens used to hold the end and inner pieces together: image by AP474, on Flickr The finished wooden structure: image by AP474, on Flickr image by AP474, on Flickr Earlier I checked to see if it had glued okay and it certainly has! Using a few clamps, I held the laser cut outer walls to the wooden inner frame: image by AP474, on Flickr Here you can see how it will blend nicely into the background: image by AP474, on Flickr Next we will get the laser cut parts, except the roof pieces, glued to the wooden frame. The roof sections will have roof vents added and be painted and weathered before being glued down. The main warehouse will have metal cladding at the top with brick at the bottom. RBE
Looking good. The ballast looks a much better base colour to me too. Looking forward to more progress. What distance have you spaced the main lines btw? Look a tad wide apart to me though. Should be approx 50mm centre to centre.

Not in it's final spacing though so will adjust it to 50mm, thanks for the advice! I have some more photos to post later on. Thanks, Will

Southwich
Evening all, Thanks David! Tonight I have tested three different ballasting "techniques" on spare track. The results are mixed so any feedback/advice is greatly appreciated! Ballast testing by southwichrailway, on Flickr On this one I've laid the ballast down, sprayed the track with water, then laid the glue over the top. I personally think this is the best result, but we'll see when it's dried tomorrow morning. Next I laid the ballast down and then sprayed it with a watered down gluey mixture, sadly the photos we're blurry so I'll add another tomorrow morning. Finally some photos of 60500 and 60036 on a light engine movement past New Southwich: 60500 and 60036 pass New Southwich light engine by southwichrailway, on Flickr 60500 and 60036 pass New Southwich light engine by southwichrailway, on Flickr 60500 and 60036 pass New Southwich light engine by southwichrailway, on Flickr Any feedback is much appreciated! Southwich
Afternoon all, Just a quick update to say that I've decided on spraying the track with water, then administering the mixture of glue, water and fairy liquid with a syringe. Also Tim Horn paid us a visit and has delivered a laser cut stock stand which is absolutely superb, so thanks to him! Southwich
Evening all, Today I have done a few jobs on the layout, the main one being ballasting. I've started laying ballast, only glueing it down along the edge of the siding. I used a mix of 50/50 glue and water with a few drops of fairy liquid. I used a hairdresser's water sprayer to wet the track and ballast. This allows the glue to seep in much easier. I then added the glue mixture with a neurofen medicine syringe, which seeped in perfectly. Other jobs done include glueing down the relay boxes and more work on the security fence. Hopefully I will get a bit more done tomorrow. Any feedback is much appreciated! Thanks, Will
