Hi David, here is a photo taken of a Peco large radius point next to the C&L point:

Hope that helps.

We have just placed the silos on the board to see how they look.

Whilst Will still needs convincing of my idea to run New Southwich in BR days as well as during the Late EWS/early DB days I took the opportunity for a bit of Banger Blue action:

Nice point work Will.

As mentioned before, the hand-built points look so much better than commercial points.

How are you planning to operate?

Conventional Seeps / Peco point 'motors' (i.e. solenoids) do not work so well with hand made points, as the point motors rely on the over-centre spring to hold the blades over.

We had problems with the Seeps used on the hand built points on Tawbridge, hence changing over to servos.

Manual operation with wire-in-tube or similar work fine, with a little resistance to hold over and of course a switch to change the frog polarity.

Oh, don't forget to add the wires to the frog etc.

Hi MudMagnet,

Thanks for the advice, very helpful! I plan to use servos and a MERG Servo controller wired up to a main control panel.

As for an update for tonight, I placed the point onto the layout and marked out where the other points will go.

Thanks,

Will

Hi Will,

We are using MERG boards (servo and decoder) for the points on Tawbridge.

There are a few photos on this page.

I'll try and take some clearer photos tomorrow.

Hi all,

Thanks for the advice and photos MudMagnet.

Over the last few nights I have started work on the third point, with the sleepers and first rail being glued down. Also my dad has glued the silo tops on. Over the next few nights I aim to have the rails all glued down in readiness for the blades to go on on Saturday/Sunday.

Thanks,

Will

Hi all,

Thanks to Class"66", David and class60lover for the positive feedback.

Tonight I have finished the left hand point I have been working on. A few pictures to follow:

Over the next week I plan on finishing off the track work with a set of trap points.

Thanks,

A little progress on the silos. Grimley Senior has kindly made the cone shaped parts that sit under the silo, and what a superb job he has made of them. Very impressed and pleased with the result.

This is how they started off:

And here they are:

This is what you will see once installed at the bottom of the silo and enclosed:

Next I need to get the enclosed boxed structures made up, painted and weathered. Once the walkway that straddles the four silos has been finished we can then make a start on painting the silos.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi all,

Tonight I have finished building the trap point for the layout. It will be put just in front of the main line point. Pics to follow:

The rails still need to be cut to size after I have fitted the point on the layout. Any feedback is much appreciated,

Thanks,

Will
