Another odd paint job

08879 Tinsley

Interesting to note 08879 sans "wasp stripes", which is still a requirement of National Safety Rules.

I've been uploading more stuff to the Flickr, some suitable content for this thread extracted from my 'Shunting Devices' collection here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/96749081@N03/albums/72157712233503436

These pictures are all from a couple of years back, so things may have moved on a little since, but I believe the 08s are all still hard at work, with 08652 in storage.

08650 (with the high level pipes) and 08947 at Whatley, both involved in a shunt on the wagon repair shops.

Overnight a train at Whatley had been cancelled (from memory it was for Exeter) and space in the sidings is as at a premium as anyone who's ever visited will know. The loaded wagons were over the limit of what the SW1001 Switcher 120 'Kenneth John Witcombe' could handle solo, so 08652 was added and the pair were driven in tandem to get the wagons back to the quarry.

The motley mix of wagons in tow behind 08650 are evidence of the cripple shunt taking place. For those not familiar with the cripple sidings, it is where defective wagons are placed for repair when removed from a train. The mix seen above could well be to get a certain wagon to a particular siding for a repair or two move defective and repaired wagons around. These shunts tend to be 'as required', so you need a bit of luck to catch one in progress.

Mendip Rail has a small track maintenance team and they have the capability to carry out a range of repairs. Several internal user wagons are maintained for this purpose, one is seen loaded with sleepers and attached to 08652 as it sits alongside 66053

08652 looks forgotten as it sits frosted over in the winter wonderland of a frosty Whatley. Several overhauled 08s have arrived at Whatley recently and it wasn't long before 652 was away to Merehead on the back of a lorry.

08643 is ex St Philip's Marsh, hence its early First Great Western era green paint. It was no doubt subjected to a less dirty job in Bristol, but is gainfully employed at Merehead shunting the cripple sidings and providing back up for the Switcher when needed.

Had to share this cracking shot from Russell Maiden, D3754 at Royal Oak in October '67... a real time capsule with one of Old Oak's many 350s attached to a GW shunting truck, and taken just before the track layout here was altered and before the Westaway appeared in the background...

A few pics of the Trafford Park FLT pilots over the past few years.

First up 08585 'Vicky' in the Powerhaul scheme. 08585 relieved 08624 here in 2015 and would stay until being replaced by 08785 in Oct 2017.

Secondly then is 08785 which completed a 2 year stint here from Oct 2017 until November 2019. It being moved to LH Group for a well deserved exam and repairs.

And finally, 08530 is the current pilot having taken over from 08785 in November 2019.

Some good Springs Branch workhorses there, 08485 and 08815 in particular come to mind :)

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks  Chris' ;) I was surprised to see 397 last long enough at SP to get painted into grey. Funny how some 08 numbers at SP have always stuck in the mind since the late 1970's like the low numbered ones such as 126, 129, 130, then 301 302, 304, 337, 340, 342. 423 was a long time stayer, as was 08 744, and as you mentioned 815 (once named 'Brenda') and my fave 08 925.:)

A few more for the records. 08 396 first in the scrap line with stored 08's & 25's. 08 130 with a missing number 3, and last is the back end of 08337 sticking out of the old steam shed.
