Halvarras
D3291 on pilot duty at Stafford 11/11/73. On close inspection its original identity 13291 could be made out under its newer number. It was shortly to be renumbered again to 08221, still in this filthy green livery with early BR emblem. It doesn't appear to have been deemed worthy of a data panel! Applying TOPS numbers in the older block serif style numerals (7 years out-of-date) was very much a Scottish Region habit, but the WR's Old Oak Common managed to dig some out of the stores for 08483/630/779/947......here's 08779 so adorned at OOC on 6/4/74. According to my notebook the green 08 to the left would appear to have been 08035. Apologies for the image quality, the camera responsible didn't last long.........
D826
Love the Old Oak picture, variety in 3 Gronks. Also the glimpse of the Hymek behind. My, the Hymeks were stylish. Cracking Neil. Thanks. johnd
Neil I am not sure about the date you quoted for D7502 being on Penzance shed along side D1026 as the visit and picture taken by me as it was was made during a layover of a railtour starting at Crewe and travelling down overnight. on the return run we disembarked at Bodmin Road for a trip up to Bodmin station. I have pictures that would drive the elf & safety brigade into another world with the way we all were at track level. The Western D1026 was carrying the return head board whilst on shed of the tour - "The Great Western" in readiness for the north bound journey. All the same would interested to know the date thanks. Halvarras
John this seems to have slipped into the wrong thread so I'll try to be brief - quite right, D7502 was still active in Cornwall that May, in fact on 6/5/72 I logged it between Chacewater and Truro working the up 'Cornishman' (1E21) paired with D7577; presumably they came off at Plymouth. This is relevant because the 'sixbellsjunction' website lists a "Great Western" tour running two weeks later, 19 - 21/5/72, organised by WRC (?) with headcodes 1Z43/1Z41 and traction "at least 1045". Seems to fit.......hope this helps!

I have a shot of 7029 outside the Factory at Old Oak taken in August '75, nearby is 08 035 looking fairly tidy in its recently applied blue livery.
Owd Bob
Bad pic' but someone once asked about the old Red Coach. It had 'Mess Van' written on the sides, seen on the scrap line at SP depot as 08744 passes. 6-11-83. Was an early Sunday morning, the day after bonfire night, hence the foggy atmosphere!

Rugd1022
I wondered what that short stubby siding was for at Small Heath...... the site of the scrapyard is now occupied by a garage with a dodgy reputation.... Southof1E top tmd
Whilst Motherwell's/Shields leaping salmon emblem was regulary photographed on their class 37's and 81's perhaps less common was salmon on shunters. 08568 shows her leaping salmon nicely at Mossend yard on June 20th 1986. Why does the shunter in the lower picture have an extra cabinet below the grill whereas the shunter in the upper picture does not. I do not have easy access to books focusing on these locos and I have not been able to find an answer on the internet or on this forum - I realize that this could be my search terms. Thanks for the help, Tex

The Shunter in the upper picture is Vacuum Brake only and the lower picture is Dual Braked (Vacuum and Air) hence the additional cabinet. 1 1

Hi David, I appreciate the response - it was what I suspected, but was not sure. Further questions for the collective. Were some built vacuum only and some dual braked? Or were air brakes added later? Thanks for the help, Tex
Hippel
Hi Tex, They were not built with train air brakes, the air brake was just a 'straight' air brake in use on the loco only. Train air brakes were fitted to some later. All were built with vacuum train brakes except for 13092-13101 (D3092-3101). Paul.

Can anyone guide me on how to find out when a specific class member had the air brake modification? Specifically, I would like to determine when 08611 had the conversion performed. Thanks in advance, Tex

It was Dual Braked during 1982. The Loco was stored Unserviceable LO(u) in May 1982 and re-instated LO August 1982 so it's possible the conversion took place during that period. RMweb Premium keefer Posted September 19, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 19, 2020 (edited) September 1982 R.O. (roughly covering June/July) shows 08611 at Swindon for Intermediate Overhaul and Dual brake modification. October issue says 'Swindon...29th July 08611(reinstated)' November issue says 'DB fitted August: 08611' and 'TRANSFERS: August: 08611 Su-LO' Interestingly, around the same time, there are many 08s losing their vacuum brakes when being fitted thus becoming air-brake only.
