So in her very final days in service, then. I remember seeing some of these in the Crewe/Liverpool area when I went there on a MYSTEX in late 1968/early 1969- had to check the numbers, as they didn't look right..

Sold to NCB, so obviously a bit of life left in her!

My 'spotting notes' contain the following entry

Tues. 12/12/1972

Waterhall Jct. (actually from my classroom window !).

6979+12061+12063+12071

Note(s)

The three Cl.11 shunters had been purchased from 8F Springs Branch (Wigan) by the National Coal Board and were en-route to Nantgarw Colliery & Coke Ovens where they would replace the three Hunslet 18” 0-6-0ST locos.

Ten days later, Friday 22nd December 1972, a few friends and I caught the train to Taffs Well and then walked  to Nantgarw Colliery ( quite a hike) to catch the two working Hunslet 18" tanks, the third was laid up and the three Cl.11 shunters were inside the shed.

Thanks to whoever started this thread for reminding me I'm now forty years older !

Wolverton Works open day, 1985, D3018 Haversham with the sign leaning against it reading "the oldest surviving BR loco". I'm sure someone will dispute that claim, but that's what they said. Perhaps the sign wasn't big enough for "still in service".

The words underneath the sign are painted on:

HAND LIGHT SOCKET

ENGINE SUMP OIL DRAIN

Hard to get the exposure right with a clean black loco on a bright sunny day.

08749, I think on a passenger duty at Sheffield, March 1983: there was a two-portion cross-country service that had the short Leeds portion arrive into a bay platform, then the shunter would move the coaches onto the rear of the Newcastle (?) portion for the journey south.

The platform staff had a job to prevent haulage bashers from boarding, and would follow them onto the train to turf them off. If you were sneaky though, you'd hop on with a half-drunk cuppa, and a newspaper with the crossword mostly filled in, then quickly spread out on a table, and watch them walk right past. Allegedly.

Yes you're right. At the time, and until it's withdrawal it was the oldest active loco in BR service. Went to Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway via an Aylesbury Open Day. She did brake van rides at Aylesbury staion on their open day/s.

As i didnt have the time to scan the pics i basically took photos of them on the iphone and used photoshop express to crop and straighten them before using the photobucket app to upload them!

The same 08 644 at Penzance in 1984.  The naming ceremony for "Debbie" involved a bottle of milk being smashed over the buffers!

Great thread, some fantastic shots in here! I've had a dig through what I've got, most are at Eastleigh from the last few years with some from Southampton Maritime and a couple from Millbrook.

First up is 08482 with a solitary Seacow at Eastleigh on 16/2/07

post-7258-0-41207200-1357081404.jpg

I've always liked 08804's Yellow arrows and steps, makes it a bit different! Seen at Eastleigh on its own on 25/3/08 and again over a year later on 2/6/09 with the empty oil trip from the depot to the yard.

Seen on 9/2/10 is 08482 shunting MLA's

post-7258-0-27803700-1357081447.jpg

Bit of an odd one, but I believe 08904 had broken down earlier in the day. It ended up being attached to 08735 and dragged around the yard for the rest of the day! 28/5/10.

post-7258-0-93275400-1357081458.jpg

Doing the depot trip with a pair of UID 66's and TTA's is 08735 on 8/2/11. It had the unofficial (and crudely applied!) name; "The Cement Mixer".

post-7258-0-65433200-1357081481.jpg

Southampton Maritime on 14/5/11 has three on show. At the back is 08531, while resident scrapper 08575 sits rusting away at the front. Next to 70009 is 08624.

post-7258-0-43313700-1357081501.jpg

Cut down 08995 shunts a hefty piece of Balfour Beatty equipment on 13/6/11.

post-7258-0-92337200-1357081512.jpg

Shuttling FLA's around Southampton Maritime on 25/6/11 are 08531 on the left and 08624 in the middle.

post-7258-0-86834900-1357081520.jpg

A catch that was the icing to a spectacular hour at Millbrook on 14/6/12 is 08785 shunting out a flat from a rake before shifting some loaded wagons.

Hunslet hire-in 08873, still in RES colours, sits outside the repair shop at Southampton Maritime on 17/9/12.

It's good to see these old beasts being needed and out earning their keep! I just wonder what will replace them when their time is finally up.

Cheers,

Andy.
