Millfield.............. A helix build in progress.............

A Video showing various stock ascending and descending the helix

Note how 37511 with its tank ballast weight removed (to allow for speaker placement)manages to climb the helix with 14 BAA and 16 MEA in tow (just a test not prototypical of course)but the 56 slips with only 9 Tilcon JGA.

After investigations it seems the JGAs are not particularly free running. In fact they wont descend the helix under their own inertia if left to do so individually!! So some wagon maintenence is neccessaary.

There also seems to be a steep spot in the helix at about 2 'O' Clock as you look at it square on. It is made aparant by locos slipping to a vaying degree when under a large load. So some rejigging of the threaded rods may be in order.

I am also having trouble with the two 56s couplings locking at an angle and derailing the lead wagon, a bit like my 60 does!?!? does anyone have a solution for this?

Very nice Guy

One cheap way to check the incline would be to mount a small spirit level on a bogie bolster and send it up and down as slowly as you can watching the bubble you will be able to see buy it's movement in the tube the high and low spots.

If you can get a level that indicates angles as well you can check that at the same time, Micro Mark do a digital meter that will go on a wagon which is ideal but there site is down at the moment so I could not get a link for you.

That old Hornby coupling problem again I had the same with my Class 50s and a 60 and I've also fixed pitbull1845s 60 as well!

All that's needed is to file off the point of the triangle in the coupling mechanism (part of the metal chassis). It's a bit of trial and error as to how much so little at a time and check. What you want is the coupling (when all reassembled) to return to centre on its own if you push it to either side with your finger. Some people recommend removing the spring but I have left them in on all my locos and all work perfectly and do not derail stock.

Hi Ian,

My four '56s and the 60 have always suffered from that, so when I finally get round to building a helix I'll drop them round to the Exford workshop.

Nice work Guy.

You've given me ideas to increase the storage capacity on Blackmill.......... So I can put more yellow stuff on.

Cheers,

Mick

Hmmm. I think Nobby and the rest of the Blackmill crew might have something to say about that! Probably let the yellow stuff down but not back up again!

Nothing happening with the layout as such but I have finished one of my Hunslet Barclay Weedkilling class 20's

I have added a Zimo sound chip that I have reallocated the functions on so I can have independent control of the lights that I have also fitted.

Any questions (apart from why have you destroyed a limited edition loco) please ask.

Oh and I will be doing its sister loco soon so I might do a video how to of fitting all the kit and reallocating the functions.

Also a quick vid of me using my HTC phone to control it

Nice work Guy. The class 20 looks and sounds great.

Just out of interest, have you tried the Hornby Railmaster demo app with your HTC? I am interested in how it compares with the JMRI setup you have.

Hi Guy,

Our JGA's were also a bit sluggish. The internal weights have been removed - they are fitted with loads, so that's weighty enough.

One thing that can occur over time with Bachmann wagons is that the pinpoints need cleaning out (axle end and chassis) and a tiny dab of dry lubricant adding - graphite is ideal. It's all to do with the plastic that is used - this is how it was explained to me -  it's ABS based, so not "self-lubricating" as poly type plastics are. I once had a rake of 20 HEA's that dragged badly - they were cleaned and lubricated and the free running was transformed.

Cheers,

Mick

Thanks Mick just the sort of info I was looking for.

Hi Guy

...........however it looks like you're on a slippery slope........

Phil

You are so right Phil. I'm opening boxes left right and centre! It's going to take a day to box all the stock up so I can carry on constructing! Gets a bit addictive this playing with trains lark!

I Guy,

20 sounds great, I wish I had got the weed killer pair now...  I have no requirement for a pair of 20's but would happily have a couple paired together witha sound chip.

Thanks for the tip Mick, I think some of my stock needs that treatment.

Cheers

Hi Scott

You can still get them off Ebay now and again for a little bit less or about the same price as Kernow sold them for.

Both of mine will be chipped and lighted with one at each end of a weed killing train.

I just think they are really nice looking locos and whilst a bit specialised, I just had to have them. Hopefully Kernow will have 2 of the coaches out soon as well!

Hi Dave

I've not tried the Railmaster set up yet. I didn't even know you could get a demo of it! I might put that on my list of things to try!

Cheers

Sounds superb Guy. I presume it is a Digitrains recording if it´s on the Zimo?

I had my old (5ish year old) SWD class 20 chip reblown to something else as I couldn´t stand the sound of it in the end but this is something else.

I´m going back to the UK tomorrow for the weekend and I´m off to the Stafford show on Sunday (although I´m not going just because of the show you understand!!) and I see Digitrains are in attendance. You´ve got me thinking now??

What sort of speaker did you put in it? I seem to remember that space is a bit tight under the nose end.

Thanks Mick just the sort of info I was looking for.

Thanks from me too. I´ve always put a drop of oil on the pin point but it doesn´t last that long, not on a roundy-roundy layout.

Hi mate

I have to say i am very impressed with the helx so far.but will you be building another helix for the return loop?

Hi Terry, there will be another helix sometime in the distant future! ;-)

Great video, david

Cheers David

Hi Andy, both of the Hunslet 20s will have Sounds from Digitrains on their zimo chips. I also have a 08 that has Zimo/Digitrains sounds.

The zimo chips are so versatile with loads of function options on them and JMRI Decoder Pro makes them so easy to program. The speaker is also from Digitrains, I will have to check the model number but its one that Jeremy from Digitrains recommended.
