HO NEM close couplings

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I have two fairly old 2nd-hand Roco long wheelbase 2-axle wagons (swiss outline) with NEM coupling sockets but no close-coupling mechanisms ("KKK"). On the inner box it states that  Roco close coupling mechanisms no. 4592 may be fitted. I have failed to find these online under this reference number. Does anyone have any useful tips?

I also have some older items of 2-axle and bogie rolling stock (Lima, Liliput, dc-converted Maerklin) and a Lima SBB RBe4/4 electric railcar, all currently fitted with fixed hook-and-loop couplers. I would like to convert these also to take NEM coupling pockets, if possible with close-coupling mechanisms. Again, hints and tips would be greatly appreciated.

I have limited experience with alterations, but am prepared to give it a go.

Thanks.

Peter

The narrower version of the Roco close coupling mech http://www.roco.com/products/Roco/40343.aspx is probably better for 2-axle stock. If not using close coupling mechanisms, the adaptors made by Chivers Finelines or Parkside Dundas are a possibility. They are intended to take the Bachmann 'fishtail' NEM pockets as used on their wagons (and available in their NEM coupler packages).

Another, albeit expensive and fragile, option is the Fleischmann mechanism which has a NEM 363 connection (sort of channel) that can take the appropriate Fleischmann or Roco heads. http://www.roco.com/products/Fleischmann/6574.aspx

Also, this is the Roco 4592 coupling http://www.ebay.de/itm/Roco-Kurzkupplung-4592-/290603509483

  • 2 months later...

I have now replaced old fixed couplers with Symoba close-coupling units and Roco close couplings in a dozen items of rolling stock. Some required significant cutting of floors, but in bogie passenger cars I found that when a square of underside was removed the couplings fixed nicely to the underside of the seats moulding. I had to cut away the front frames of bogies to make clearance. Initially I used the recommended UHU clear two-part epoxy, but the last few have fixed very nicely with double-sided adhesive tape. The only vehicle which really gave clearance problems was a Lima SBB RBe4/4 where the motor bogie does not allow clearance for a fully close coupling. Altogether I would agree with the recommndation about Symoba. Thanks, Petri.
