noiseboy72
http://www.ctcprinter.com/product_detail.php?ProId=23 The Chinese "replicate" of the Makerbot2, sold for about £275 with twin extruders. Heated bed and can use PLA, ABS & HIPS etc. If you get a good one, they work very well. Just made a test print of an S-Stock underground train and the quality is excellent. Will post some pics in a more appropriate thread.
woko
Dont think anyone has listed this zortrax m200 www.zortrax.com which gets great reviews and of course there is the new BCN3D Sigma www.bcn3dtechnologies.com which is a dual extruder, both print in pla, incidently the zortrax is being used by a few modellers creating figurines. brian777999
What about 3D scanners : how much do you have to pay to get something that works well ? I have been reading a few reviews on Amazon and most of the scanners have received large numbers of scathing comments. Many of them seem to be a total waste of money. The MATTER AND FORM scanner seems to be okay. Has anybody used it for model trains ? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Matter-and-Form-Desktop-3D-Laser-Scanner-Fast-Delivery-in-Austalia-/142068953969?hash=item2113f83371:g:KEkAAOSwaB5XmvMu

stadman
Not our usual subject http://www.wazer.com not really for the general modeller. May be of use to the model engineering / live steamers though.
simon br blue
Does anyone have experience of a CTC SLA 3D printer? It looks like a copy of a Formlabs printer but a lot cheaper, link below to EBay- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CTC-SLA-3D-printer-Stereolithography-SLA-Factory-direct-low-price-UK-stock-/322512520547?hash=item4b173e8563:g:htMAAOSwdjNZCER3
douglas clark
Does anyone have experience of a CTC SLA 3D printer? It looks like a copy of a Formlabs printer but a lot cheaper, link below to EBay- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CTC-SLA-3D-printer-Stereolithography-SLA-Factory-direct-low-price-UK-stock-/322512520547?hash=item4b173e8563:g:htMAAOSwdjNZCER3 Unfortunately I have no experience of 3D printers whatsoever! However my interest in 3D printer technology suggests that 'banding' might be an issue for modellers, given that the small parts that we are likely to produce, surface irregularities are going to look like blemishes.Tho' yet again some of the examples I have seen are probably magnified well beyond what would be 'acceptable' in a model. If SLA resolves these issues, despite the far greater cost of resin, then it might be a solution. I would like to see a test print by an SLA printer of an open topped box. This would, perhaps, tell us whether the issues around 'banding' are resolved or not. A similar print of, say a boiler would resolve issues around 'support'. Even a completely flat print might give us something to go on. These are expensive items to add to a modellers tool kit, but without some reassurance about accuracy and quality, I for one will await those braver than I to invest and provide feed-back! (My own interest, apart from making an accurate model of an industrial locomotive - is to use the technology to make a fairly straightforward lever control for shutters, y'know, the wooden variety that goes on windows. To make these individually would be time consuming and destroy the business case. So, whilst I'd hope to see some replies here, if I see some elsewhere, I'll re-post here. If that makes sense?) rue_d_etropal
Price for basic printers does seem to be very low now, and will get lower, but for complex items I would still prefer to use Shapeways. I am considering a low cost printer, just for simple items such as window frames and other small fittings. All too often, some want something than can do everything, but I would rather have several more specialised and probably far cheaper tools to do different types of job. What is not always obvious from descriptions is whether printer is stand alone or has to be connected to computer.
Robin2
I recently bought an Anet A2 3D printer and while I have done very little with it yet I think it will be well able to make small things like window frames and railings. I bought it on EBay for £156 IIRC and I almost got my full money's worth from the fun of building it. It can print from a micro-SD card or (which I prefer) while controlled by a PC. ...R
