Clever idea for the washer plant base, coming along well

Thanks David, I am really pleased with how it has turned out. Will look better once painted and in location but hopefully it gives you an idea of what I am hoping to achieve.

These two photos hopefully show what I am trying to model, these are taken at March depot but very similar.

I am waiting for some bits and bobs to arrive and then hopefully more progress can be made.

Not much to report on Boxenby. Unfortunately there has not been any progress since the last post. However, today I received two parcels from Tim Horn Lasercutting. Thanks Tim!

These are the additional boards which will be added to the front of the layout to allow the fuelling point and the rest of the stabling sidings to be modelled.

Looking forward to getting the boards put together and in position. Then I can lay some more sleepers! Yay!!

A small update.

During the evenings last week I managed to find some time to get the majority of the assembly of the new boards completed. Now just need to finish off and get the end plates and baseboard alignment dowels fitted.

The plan has always been to model the refuelling point and add this later on when the time was right. Now that sleeper laying has begun it made sense to get the baseboards built to allow the majority of the track to be put down and aligned. Thanks to Tim Horn for making the baseboards, I would thoroughly recommend his products.

The new boards also allow for the rest of the three stabling sidings.

Here are some photos showing the new baseboards positioned next to the three main boards. The new boards need raising a little to sit at the same height as the main boards.

Hopefully this gives you an idea of how it will look when the track is eventually finished in 2030!!

Looking towards the depot from the north end of the depot.

You can see 56013 and 56083 positioned where the refuelling point will be. 56049 and 58006 are at the end of the three stabling sidings.

Some more views.

wow

it looks like the original boards are up against the wall,   is the plan to maybe have it a bit more central so you can walk all the way round?    I'm not sure what sort of width you have there but it looks like quite a stretch.

Hi Class60lover, there is just enough of a gap to allow you to stand behind the original baseboards. To be honest it is starting to get a bit tight but I will have to manage for now!

The idea is that the layout will be operated from the east side, most of the photos posted have been taken from this side.

Today I managed to raise the new baseboards and they are now not too far off. A bit of adjustment is required but it is pretty much there.

Tomorrow I plan to get the baseboard alignment dowels in and the boards properly connected.

Then I can get the trackplan down and start laying sleepers.

A few photos.

A small update today.

The new baseboards have now been aligned and bolted together with just a small tweak required on the levelling but overall I am really pleased.

I have printed off the track plan for the refuelling point area and this has just been laid on the board.

Now the track plan is down this has raised a problem with the track, which to be honest I had been expecting, there is a point across a baseboard joint. I am actually quite surprised that it is only one point that is straddling a baseboard joint.

If anyone has any suggestions for how best to deal with the point issue I would be very grateful.

I think this just shows that planning ahead is always beneficial!!

A few photos.

I am now going to make a start on the design for the concrete area for the refuelling point and then finish laying the sleepers for the three stabling sidings.

Hopefully this will give me some time to have a think about how best to deal with the point across the joint.

You can approach this in a number of ways.
Cut the point.
Move the point.
Move the baseboard joint.

And ... the answer is probably a combination of all of them.

Cut the point -- only the blades absolutely need to be kept intact on one board to work properly. It's best not to cut through the vee, too. That means you can split the point in the middle (between the vee and the start of the blades) without too much difficulty.

Move the point -- if the blades or vee do line up with the joint, massage the plan slightly to move the point so it doesn't line up like that. Remember you don't have to get the entire thing off the join, just move it enough to avoid the critical pieces.

Move the joint -- Make a small triangle recess in one board, and add a small triangle on the side of the other board that matches up. This makes a non-straight joint. With careful planning you can then cross the line at right-angles at a convenient place where there are no points. Have a look at the Liverpool Lime Street thread on this site to see this kind of baseboard joint in action.

Good evening Bloodnok, thank you for your post and suggestions, much appreciated.

I will certainly have a look at the Liverpool Lime Street thread. Thank you.

Thanks again, I think some time to consider the best way forward is required for the time being.

Tracklaying has continued this weekend - a few more lengths of flat bottom have been laid and the first point is all but complete. This point just needs the tie bar, check rails and a few cosmetic chairs adding then it’s ready to be wired up. A few photos of progress:

One down, only 28 left to go!

Kind regards,

When you look at that task its looks rather a daunting prospect of doing it all individually but it seems like you can get them down pretty fast, assuming of course  progress to date has been 18 hours a day :D.

It proves that if you take your time and do things correctly you get a much more rewarding finish.

Thanks, Class60lover and Craig for posting on my thread.

Sorry for the lack of updates, due to a family bereavement in June, progress on my project has all but ground to a halt.

The end of November saw me find a few hours to thread some chairs on to rails which had the effect of getting me back to the project albeit slowly and on a small scale.

IMG_6956.jpg.cbc58311798055d84674e5e044a57422.jpg

Since then I have threaded quite a few chairs on to rails…..and, earlier today a few more sections of rail were laid, thanks Will!

I am hoping that 2022 will see more progress and the first proper running of locomotives at Boxenby. Fingers crossed!
Hopefully next summer I can organise a ballasting party!

Happy New Year to all RMweb members, Andy Y and the team at RMweb.

I have just realised, it was 12 years ago today!

How time flies...I really must get this project finished.....

Happy New Year!

Today I have mostly been threading chairs on to rail….

Another important job that we have done today is to cut out and remove the area of the baseboard to allow the washer plant road concrete pad to be lowered into position. This now sits at the correct height. It needs a bit of a tidy up, but the main work has been completed.

This is a job well done.

A few more lengths of rail have also been laid.

Thanks Will!

How long is that taking to lay all them out as i thought it would  take an age but you seem to be getting on a quite a rate?

@Grimleygrid pre threads the clips on the rails and I glue the clips down to the sleepers using roller gauges to hold the track in place until the MEK goes off. I reckon it takes about 30-45 minutes per metre of track to lay, and we’ve done one metre per road so far.

Kind regards,

Will

Happy New Year Class60lover.

Thank you.

I see that Will has answered!

Slow progress but hopefully 2022 will see the first real running of trains at Boxenby!
