Shunters MPD - Layout Now for Sale

Recommended Posts

Cheers InterCity125 a lot of time and effort has gone into it, even though i've only spent £150 on it not inc stock of course,

next show is at Dukinfield next weekend, still got plenty of little details to add, as well as getting all the stock cleaned and prepped ready to go

hope fully add some new photos on here in a bit  :locomotive:

You're welcome. Considering the budget of just £150, the result is fantastic. Nice detailing too.

Look forward to reading more following its appearance at the Dukinfield Show.

I have just read the whole thread and this is a great little layout, it oozes plenty of activity and atmosphere. For the mention £150 spend (locos included), I think you have done a marvelous job in presenting an exhibition layout. Well done. :good:

One question in regards to uncoupling, I don't see any ramps nor staples on couplers (magnetic uncoupling), so how do you go about shunting/uncoupling during operating sessions ?

Cheers, Gary.

Hi Gary,

the £150.00 doesn't include the locos or stock, as its forever changing and increasing.

for uncoupling we use a paper clip that is unfolded into a hook shape, given the amount of positions available to uncouple stock etc it was felt that this method would give us a more flexible way of shunting

as in the real world (having done it many times). also by doing it this way it prevents the layout being cluttered with magnets and ramps, which in a small space could spoil the overall effect.

on a larger layout i would be tempted by uncoupling ramps or magnets, especially if there were any fixed uncoupling places such as at a station, for running round etc.

regarding couplings we decided to stick with the narrow tension lock system, as it works for us, but given the amount of stock we have, to convert it all to anything else would be a massive task.

Hope this helps

Cheers Kevin

Time for an update on the latest happenings at Shunters MPD:

well we have a couple of new locomotives a repainted Hornby pug named Stormer and an Andrew Barclay 040 saddle tank built from the ARC Models kits onto a Hornby Pug chassis

The layout recently attended the Leigh model railway show where these two locos made their debut, the barclay still requires further detailing work but performed brilliantly over the two days and was very well received.

over the weekend, sadly I noticed that some of the older 2nd hand points were starting to show their age as such I'm are planning to relay them with new ones over the coming few weeks, i hope to post photos of this over the coming few weeks

below are a few photos from the weekend:

Just "fast forwarded" through your thread, and enjoyed it greatly.

I noticed that there has been a gradual shift from wholly mainline towards true industrial locos. Don't know if you are a member, but the Industrial Railway Society has a lot of its magazines on-line now. Try here, and work down through the "archive" section:

http://www.irsociety.co.uk

You could always do horrible things to Terriers, Jinties and GWR panniers! because members of all three types went into industrial use in various places.

All the best, Kevin

Morning all,

I know its been a while since the last update on the layout, sadly been very busy with other things.

However, we're excited currently with our own model shop developments as we have recently won a small business award from none other than Dragons' Den star, Theo Paphitis! We got to meet him in person to collect our award and to chat to fellow Dragon, Deborah Meaden on the day as she was one of the guest speakers at the event in Birmingham. Plenty of exciting times ahead now that we're in Mr Paphitis' inner circle of business...

Here we both are collecting our award from Theo Paphitis. I am on the left whilst Christopher, my business partner for the model shop, is on the right.

In further news i am intending on selling this layout, as im ready to start a new industrial layout. I have one last show with this layout just before Easter. If anyone is interested in buying the layout please send me a private message. The sale is for the layout only, so no stock, lights or controllers will be included.

Cheers

Kevin

When you say 'model shop', do you mean 'shop, selling models'? Or, is there more to it than that?

Either way, the very best of fortune with it. We need more model shops, of any description, especially ones run by chaps called Kevin.

Kevin

yes its an online model shop selling small detailing kits and accessories :) www.northwesternmodels.co.uk
