Some of you may have seen Widnes either for real or on here, we try and make it feel like you are track side watching a real railway operate, we aren't attracted by gimmicks as these are few and far between on the real thing, we are however attracted by operating the railway correctly - more of this in time for now here's some links to the existing threads on the old RMWeb.

Looking forward to seeing WVY again on Saturday at Woking when the "Leaford on the road crew" will be making the trip specifically to see it.smile.gif

Looks like we have some extra operators then :D

You are welcome (providing everything is running ok of course) to have a go :)

Why wouldn't everything run OK, or is Woking within the sphere of influence of the Crystal Palace radio transmitter? :P

Chris

Woking is the home of H.G.Wells ...

Ally Pally is next year for Widnes  ;)

Sounds great!! Thanks beast

I've waited a long time to see this one.

Cheers

Scott

Another operator :) - seriously, we will let anyone have a go.

If you can use *any* controller you are most of the way there, we will show you how to use our Digitrax variations, then follow the instructions from the fiddleyard man "You have train nnnn" then "Wait" then "Go!" normally, and the signals on the scenic section (there's a little bit of a complication but once you know, you know) and that's it - the MILF will handle you for as long as you want to play

Having had the pleasure of an invite to operate the layout at Darlington show a few years ago, I can vouch for the realism. I dont think I have been so nervous though, and concentration level for just a short period was draining. (Look forward to seeing Charlotte road at our show this year).

Last show for Lotty - then the breakers torch !

The trick with Widnes is not to worry about whats happening around you bit drive as instructed, either by the fiddle yard controller or the signals, there are lots of interesting moves which look like impending disaster but its all interlocked so providing SPADs are avoided all will be well :)

Thanks to all the Widnes crew for letting a complete novice take a controller today.:)

Once you're shown how its not as scary as it looks, just need to look at the signals not the other trains!

Hope to see you all again somewhere.

Good isn't it? I'd say it's the most interesting layout to operate I've ever come across.

Glad you enjoyed it Ian :)

Nice to meet you at last Paul B)

A really good show capped by a young lad (aged about 7) who was patiently waiting for the shunter to move so we said "come and move it yourself", his smile was a mile when he was eventually persuaded to leave :)

Very funny when his dad wanted to drive one as well and overruled his son  (I think "dad" worked for the big railway)

The layout was virtually faultless, although the operators weren't quite so good

In true "demo" style (anyone who's ever done a demo to an audience will know that no matter how much you test things, when you demo them something nearly always goes wrong) - we were showing the system to a senior manager from the Western (apparently they do have signals there after all :P ) and we showed him the SPADI, all nice stuff, but then I set the route for the train and forgot to reset the SPAD, and the route and signal cleared ... (not permitted !!) - DOH!)

Yep was nice to meet you too and the others who showed me how the controls worked. Very impressed with the roll cages and packing cases, looked expensive but efficient and protects all the gear well. Going to make a second trolley to make wheeling our layouts around even easier.

Hi Paul

Just keep an eye on ebay. It's amazing what you can pick up locally so no transport costs involved. Most of our storage was sourced that way.
