Del
I've had a hunt about various places and I can't find anywhere that tells me when HAL & BIL were withdrawn from passenger service. Can anyone let me know? Also did they run on the South Eastern division? EDIT - just found the BILs were withdrawn in '69, so that's that out of the way. Dates depend on where you're interested in - for the Coastways (Central Division, East and West of Brighton) they were withdrawn in July 1971, at least according to Welch's "Slam Doors On The Southern". I've no idea if 2-BILs were ever requlars on the SED, but I guess the 2-HALs were moved off there following Phase I of the Kent Coast electrification. This is all probably documented at semgonline. ??en
SRman
BILs didn't run on the SED. HALs ran on all three divisions at times. Allocations changed as new stock came in to replace old in particular areas. Alan Williams book on Southern Electrics shows one 2 BIL that made it on to the South Eastern ... it was minus its bogies at the time as it overran the buffers at Balham! robertcwp
The last 2 BIL and 2 HAL units were withdrawn in 1971 though most had gone by the end of 1970, bulk withdrawals having taken place from 1969. Though BILs did not work regularly on the SED, they would have visited Slade Green, where some overhaul work was carried out. Also, one peak hour Sevenoaks train was formed of BIL stock just before WW2 (and possibly afterwards). This was in reaction to complaints led by Orpington MP Waldron Smithers about poor quality trains.
Del
Thank you, people! Could possibly use a BIL or HAL then, depending on some other factors...
br2975
On Saturday 25th. April, 1970 I travelled on a Cardiff - Eastbourne 'Mystery Excursion' which took the SWML to North Pole, then the WLL to Clapham. . From Eastbourne we went to Lewes on 2-BIL 2052. . Lewes to Brighton was care of 4-COR 3161, returning to Lewes on 3167 . Lewes to Eastbourne was using 2-BIL 2133. . Most of the services were a 2-BIL / 2-HAL combination. . All string parcels shelves, wooden panelling and a deafening noise of gears grinding on the 4-CORs . These are the units I recorded that day . RMweb Premium zarniwhoop Posted January 2, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 2, 2010 These are the units I recorded that day [...] Mmm, many thanks for that - my memory is obviously faulty (I lost interest in trains for many years, and have forgotten a lot) because I sort of remember that the 4-CORs only appeared on the Coastways after the BILs and HALs were withdrawn, and all the pics of 4-CORs I can find are from 1972 (except one at Lovers Walk in 1969, that I'd guessed might have been used for mainline or Littlehampton-London Bridge. Now I can confidently run both at the same time for 1971 (well, aside from the fact I don't have any of them and no layout :-) cheers. ??en
