Industrial diesel

Recommended Posts

Can anyone recomend a good kit/ model of an industrial diesel. something along the lines of a simplex or ruston. fancy a dabble in some narrow gauge. I have seen some in an old model railway journal for 2ft gauge? what is the difference with this and narrow gauge on 00 track? thanks rolleyes.gif

First the common scales:

4mm Scale uses 9mm track for track, and also 12mm track

7mm Scale uses 16.5mm and 14mm and 12mm and 9mm

Some of these combinations give an exact scale track, others are taken as near enough, and lots of other combinations are used as well, these the above are the common ones.

KB scale ( a member here as well), does scale O scale on 14mm for Industrial kits, which is exact scale 2 foot complete with track parts, wagons etc.( You mentioned 2 foot........)

Nigel Lawton does 4mm on 9mm industrial Simplex and a new 7mm version adjustable for 16.5 and 14mm I believe, but check with his site. With care both kits can run on other gauges, but check.

Backwoods Miniatures do industrial 4mm on 9mm ( OO9 ), and US/International outline O scale on 16.5 gauge.

There are other specialist smaller makers that do kits and RTR for each of these scales and some bigger makers do occasional suitable items. MY apologies to other suppliers not mentioned, I am sure other posters will add as needed to the list.

(No connection with any supplier mentioned).

You will find some information on the web site of the 7mm Narrow Gauge Association here http://www.7mmnga.org.uk/

Stephen has already explained that 2ft gauge is 14mm track but if you want to make use of OO track, this is known as O16.5 and is readily available along with points from Peco - who also produce some white metal loco kits, plastic coach kits and plastic or white metal wagon kits (but no industrial diesel)

Wrightlines are one of the main producers of a variety of white metal kits for industrial locos - no web site but contact details are here http://www.emgs.org/TraderInfo/trader_abs.html

Other manufacturers to look out for are Smallbrook Studios http://www.smallbrookstudio.com/page_1201118902437.html resin kits that fit Hornby chassis - there is a model of Harlech Castle but that's a bit bigger than you wanted

Port Wynnstay Models produce resin kits for almost every Festiniog prototype plus many freelance models. Roger Chivers produces plastic kits for both British and American wagons. Port Wynnstay and Chivers are both available from EDM Models http://www.ngtrains.com/ but I can't give you a direct link to each page as the web site is closed at the moment for an update. Chivers did at one time produce a diesel loco body but I haven't seen one for some time - again perhaps too big for your idea.

If you are in the East Midlands area, the 7mm NGA are holding an Open Day at Mickleover Community Centre on 16 January (details will be on the EDM Models site when it's working). The next Narrow Gauge show will be at Shepton Mallet in February, Sparsholt (Winchester) in April and the 7mm NGA Exhibition at Burton upon Trent is in May

No connection with Peco, Wrightlines or Smallbrook but I do help Paul Martin (EDM Models) and Phil Traxson (Port Wynnstay) with their trade stands :D

Hope that helps

Mike

Heres a picture of my Wrightlines 7mm NG Ruston before it was painted and weathered.

Easy kit to make and nicely detailed.

Looks better now I have weathered it, if I can find it I'll take another picture of it.

BTW driver figure comes with the kit

Hope thats of interest :-)

Thank you so much for the replies. On investigation I think it is much easier for me to produce something to a gauge of 0 16.5 as I can ustilise peco track and have something that can be operated easily while I get started. I think in the future if I get biten by the narrow gauge bug I will probably opt for the correct 2ft gauge. The wrightlines ruston certainly looks the part and I think I will plum for one of them, certainly hope I can produce something of that standard!

Shepton Mallet show sounds like its the one to go to, will put it in my diary.

Off to the Ffestiniog tomorrow for some much needed steam and some inspiration

Thanks again and will let you know of how things pan out

Gary I love the Ruston! what chassis did you use?

Bob

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the comment.

Originally I bought Wrightlines own motor chassis kit, but quite frankly, it was not very good at all.

I told them it was not good enough and they happily refunded so this now has a Tenshodo underneath.

Thanks Garry. I had heard similar about them.

Bob

They were very good about it though.

I had actually built it so it was useless to sell on, probably ended up in the melting pot lol.

I have got pictures of it in various stages of construction.

Let me know if you need any other information.biggrin.gif
