Sentinel steam loco photos

Recommended Posts

Super photographs, as usual, Philip. A remarkable feature of Tennants, certainly in all the photos I've seen, is not just how well the locomotives were kept, but also, how tidy the entire place seems. Unusual for a foundry or it's like.

Here is one from today. 'The Guardian' does not normally do 'Sentinel' locos as its centre spread (!) but the Ley's Malleable Castings shunter in Derby looks well in this 1933 photo:

Nice photos at Wifflet Foundry, so nice in fact that I've Googled it and found a couple of shots in colour on this Flickr site.  As it happens, the colour is a close match to my 'corporate' livery for my industrial diesels.

Any links etc. to track plans etc. etc.?  Looks like quite an inspirational site for a model.

Cracking photos PGH.I wish I had discovered this place when I was younger as I'm only 4 miles or so from it.

Bands, beer and women were the order of the day at that period. As far as I can gather the site is now a B&Q amongst other things.

Enjoying all these photos and Sandy's build and it looks like a purchase for my birthday next month.

Regards Al.

Does anyone know what became of the Sentinel of this type that was at Thomas Hill's works in about 1987/88? It was parked at the end of the headshunt, next to the BR main line for a long time then it disappeared. I'm sure it was complete but not in working order and I don't think it was converted into a diesel as I doubt there was much call for such a small loco by that time.

Thanks David - thats a great find - especially as it's all part of the Format Photography Festival here in Derby sponsored by the University.

For another part of the Festival, Huw Davies (now Dean of Art, Design and Technology) has been back to places and/or people that he first photographed in 1986 including several at the BR Carriage and Wagon Works http://www.derby.ac.uk/huwdaviesformat

Details of the Festival can be found here http://www.formatfestival.com/whats-on

Sorry for drifting slightly off topic . . . .

PGH - thanks for the links, very useful.  I tried doing a 'quote' reply but the function doesn't seem to want to work!

I reckon the short headshunt by the gates and the associated 'triangle' with wagon turntable could provide an interesting little minimum space shunting puzzle.   Hmm, now where did I put those bits of plywood..............................................

That picture of the Ley's loco (Sentinel 5733) got me thinking as the Derwent Valley had one of the same CE type which predated the LNER Y1/Y3 type, and I have a spare Walsworth chassis which could suit it.

The prototype LNER 8400 was different from all those which followed it in classes Y1/Y3 and was actually identical to the others in the CE batch (although they had detail differences). They were rather quirky, with the curved quadrant valance between cab and bunker, and lower windows and higher cab eaves than the later locos. Other users included several Welsh quarries, Indian railways and the LMS (NCC).

Does anyone know of a scale drawing of 8400 or the CE class locos, although I can prep a rough sketch from the photo of 8400 and known dimensions?

Great photos and very interesting - does anyone have, or know of, any photos of the cab of the CE / CEDG type sentinel, as seen in the Nu-cats kit of yore? I'm revamping one at the moment and the replacement of the "hopw did it ever run" nucast mechanism with a black beetle bogie has left a big gap which should contain a boiler, cylinders and other controls. However, i just don't know what they look like.

Can anyone help?

Stewart
