DavidMcKenzie
Hi David, I don't know how I've managed to miss this, right up my street. I will be following with interest it looks like a wonderful project and that building is just brilliant. All the best, Dave
bmthtrains - David
Thanks both, A little more progress today - the panel painting has begun, and the window louvres have been assembled. David
RMweb Premium njee20 Posted May 8, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 8, 2021 Superb! Forgive me if I’ve missed it, how big have you made it? IIRC it scales to about 55cm long? I thought about 35cm would still look imposing!
bmthtrains - David
Just over 35cm in fact - it was scaled down quite a lot as it will be a lot ‘nearer’ than in reality so at full size dwarfed the rest of the layout! David
St. Simon
Hi David, As others have said, superb! Network Rail would probably like one as a display model! Simon
bmthtrains - David
More roof detail now - various vents and panels, and an engineer or project manager checking the plans. As my layout is set roughly 2005-2015 the real ROC would be barely months old at this point so the builders are probably still working through the snagging list... RMweb Gold Revolution Ben Posted May 8, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 8, 2021 Hi David That looks fab. Have you biffed the green panels, or are you going to paint them onto the completed building? cheers Ben A.
bmthtrains - David
Hi Ben, Masking up the green panels is today’s task. Getting them right is taking time, the light green had to be bright but slightly desaturated, and I think mixing the dark green will be the most difficult. Waiting a good six hours now for this to dry before masking the final panels ready for spraying. David 11
bmthtrains - David
The final green has come out a bit darker than I was aiming for, but the overall effect works I think. Tomorrow I can attach the cladding to the main structure, and then it’s just the guard rail to add to the roof - waiting for an order to be delivered before I can do this. Popular Post bmthtrains - David
As everything has dried nicely I’ve attached the panels and so I’m just waiting on the guard rail now. I think this captures the feel of the real building and should stand out nicely on the layout. David 19 9

RMweb Premium 37058 Posted May 12, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 12, 2021 Jesus! That's some work that fella. My home depot too! Sadly it's a far cry from my first depot, which was in fact Rugby PSB, sadly now confined to history... Just one pointer, the photo where the transit van is parked, where the access door is, is in fact a roller shutter door, but please don't feel I'm nit picking, obviously without having close up access it's probably hard to tell from photos. Really is amazing work!! Cheers Anthony
bmthtrains - David
Thanks everyone, Today I have added the etched railings on the front edge of the roof. I still need to add the missing letters on the other end, a T and an A, but that can wait until I do the next bit of laser cutting for the next building. bmthtrains - David
My next project is a bit of rolling stock work. I’ve never been happy with the gap on the 350s once the front coupling is removed, so I’ve installed some Dapol shaufenberg couplers. And I’ve started a slow process of revisiting some of my 3D prints. Coming up to 10 years old now, there has been some crystallisation on the surface of a couple of them, and my painting of them was done in haste. To begin with I’ve stripped down and sanded back the 09-3X bodies. Once painted a better match for NR yellow I will begin to re-detail them and put the motor back in. After that, the Harsco Rail Grinder will get the same treatment, and some new decals as you can now buy them commercially, so much higher quality than my home printed versions. The UFM 160 will also be revisited. These should look good parked on the layout next to the ROC or trundling through the yard. David
bmthtrains - David
With several months at least before the railway room will be ready for me to start building the baseboards, I’ve been getting a bit frustrated as there is very little modelling that I can do until then. I have a full box of OHLE parts, signals, lamps, fences, buffers, and other assorted trackside details, and can’t think of anything else that I can get making - other than more buildings, which I really want to see the actual spaces on the layout before committing to. Other than gathering some bits together and imagining trains passing by, I’ve been making lists of my existing stock and thinking about how I will use the storage yard, but when I do finally get started on the baseboards I think there’s a lot of pent up modelling that is likely to burst forth and speed things along! bmthtrains - David
To get back to ‘playing trains’ while I wait for construction of the layout to start, I’ve invested in a Kato Unitrack elevated 2 track circuit. The whole thing clips together very easily and has given me somewhere to run my stock. Unbelievably the Pendolino still hadn’t had a proper run in so both that and the 92 have been stretching their legs today. I also have a rake of Network Rail falcons, the IPA car carriers and a pair of Freightliner box wagons to test out. David 14
bmthtrains - David
Having been staying near Peterborough for a week, I called into Trains4U and was pleasantly surprised by the n gauge selection. There was actually stock to browse, which is rare in shops these days. In an excellent 2nd hand cabinet I spotted this Mk2 in Network Rail which had completely passed me by as I had no idea Farish had ever released it. It will look great with my Mk1 and class 37 but the difference in ride height compared to the Mk1 is a little alarming! BernardTPM
The bogies appear to be too close to the bodywork; the reverse of 1960s Tri-ang Mk.1s. I'd suggest a washer on the pivot to shim it up.
bmthtrains - David
Progress at last! The requirement for a home office has meant a rethink regarding where the layout will live and is now going to be 2 portable boards instead of being permanently up. It will be set up in the second bedroom unless someone is staying and will just get propped against the wall. The design is the same just 6 inches shorter. Baseboards have been ordered and so finally construction is imminent! Before I start laying track I’m experimenting with painting Peco points to represent concrete. The layout will use code 55 track but as I have some code 80 points what won’t be used in testing with these. The hard part to know is which bits can be painted without fouling their operation. So far I’ve done a single coat of enamel (2nd to follow) on a few patches of 2 points - 1 has had a puff of plastic primer first. I am also going to try airbrushing the sleepers as this should get a thinner and more even coat around the mechanisms. David
bmthtrains - David
And so it begins… Today I collected the baseboards from Model Railway Solutions in Poole. Very pleased with them, lightweight and easy to move around. There is a bit of torsional movement so a couple of diagonal braces will be added but having them made has saved me a lot of time. Next task is to make a start on the fast tracks - these have no points so a cheap place to start. With 17 points in total this is going to be expensive! bmthtrains - David
Track laying has commenced! Having been nocked out by booster jab side effects since Tuesday I’ve felt well enough to start on the track. I’ve been using a jig to ensure parallel track spacing on the scenic section, then laying the track across the baseboard joint, glueing and pinning as I go and then slicing the rails with a Dremel. This seems to have worked a treat and was a lot quicker to get right than expected. David
bmthtrains - David
And all four tracks are in on one half of one board now David 11
