Nice shots. More please.

Nice to see an LNER WD renumbered by BR before it was put into 90000 series.

Being pedantic my information sources show 43040 wasn't built until July 1949 and 62000 didn't get it's BR number until Jan 50 (note "Cycling Lion" on tender)

Keith,

Many thanks for the date information. Please do give me better dates whenever you know them, it's always useful.   Dad only  dated some of his earlier photos, and they are not in his albums in chronological order so I often have to make an (educated) guess.

Your dad and my dad (or my uncle they both took photos and I am not sure whose is whose) must have been knocking about at Nottingham Victoria at pretty much the same time!

I have his rather poor shot of 62000 there in that livery at around the same time. I wonder if it spent some time there as a station pilot?

It is my favourite part of the world for railways so many thanks for posting.

As at 1/1/48 2000 (62000) was allocated to Grantham (again from my sources of research!)

It was withdrawn Oct 51 from there

Used on a local service to/from Nottingham?

I have a number of photos yet to be scanned of 2000 (62000) at Grantham.  I think Dad once told me it was often used on inspection saloon workings as well as some local passenger services.

Excellent work Dave F.

for people like me who are often quite focussed on a particular area or region, it is really nice to look at something different. The D3 for example - had no idea such a class existed, although I believe there is a plan to build a replica 4-4-0 which maybe similarto this.

B2 "Royal Sovereign" looks very nice. I am guessing a B2is similar to a B1 maybe.

Nice stuff Dave and please feel free to "bore us" with many more !!

62000 looks in pretty good condition, considering it hasn't too long to go.

The paintwork appears to be glossy.

I wonder what livery it was? It looks lined out from the photo.

It's one of those elderly survivors which made early BR so interesting.

Phil

good spot

indeed 61671 was a Thompson rebuild from the B17 Manchester City. Used on Royal train duties, until scrapping then nameplate was put on 61632 e Belvoir Castle ( another B2). Add to which KGV funeral train was hauled by 61617 yet another B2.

A lot of people are under the illusion that the B17 class were the 'Royal Engines' Nothing can be further from the truth. As far as i am awar no B17 was rostered as the Royal Engine. The LNER used two Clauds D16 8783 and 8787 and these were directly replaced by 61671 in April 1946. In fact the only 'Royal' connection is that KGV was asked by the LNER to name the first engine Sandringham. The reason behind thisi s that it was the intention to name the class after stately homes in the LNER region. However several owners did decline LNER overtures. The naming of the later B17/4 sub class as football clubs was a good move,It was suggested that the names of the four FA Cup semi finalists would be used, but there were some amendments during to  the build run. Newcastle Unted brief appearance being one of them. A story has the rounds on this but as yet i cannot find any substantive proof. however it is a good yarn.

From "Locomotives of British Railways" (Casserley and Asher):

62000: Class D3. GNR Ivatt 6'8" 4-4-0, built 1897. Formerly LNER 4075, it was modified in 1944 for working officers' saloons, repainted green and renumbered 2000. For a short time it carried the number 1.

Interesting pictures, David - did you select those ones specially, or are they all as good? Apart from those already mentioned, I like the double-chimney Ivatt 4MT.

Some are not very sharp, but there are many nice ones, especially in the albums I'll be doing later.

It's amazing what you can to do to old photos in Photoshop.

Hi Dave

Thanks for sharing these with us. I like the photo of 8000 shunting, not only because it is a diesel but the PO wagons in their wartime/postwar liveries of replacement planks and the owner details on the black panel in the bottom left hand corner. This was of course painted over and a P number applied soon after this photo was taken.

Dad's photo shows the loco standing in the sidings at the back of Nottingham Victoria and I have seen at least one other shot of her apparently standing light engine in a platform there. That plus the odd lamp code (looks like Class K - pick up freight) made me wonder if she was pottering about the station and doing a bit of local trip working. Maybe filling in between Grantham locals.

Cheers,

Tony

Gold dust for me David that picture, thanks very much for posting. Although slightly after my timeframe, the mix of hopper wagons interests me greatly as there are so few pictures of these trains in my era (which pre-dates the much more well-known iron-ore tippler wagons (that looked liked 16T mineral wagons) which dominated the BR era). :good: Interesting to see the loco tender first as well, I wonder if the picture taken during the time when the Grantham turntable was out of action (where the locos on the iron ore workings were turned, there being no turntable at High Dyke), prior to the triangle being installed?
