LNER4479
Have you got hold of any of Dan Pinnock's kits fo rthese, 4479? IIRC there are quite detailed notes about the different sets and what they were used for. Hi Jonathan, I've written to Danny who sent me a nice reply and his catalogue for the artic sets. What he actually supplies is any combination of his 6-wheel bodies to make 2, 3 or 4 sets - but not the longer brake vehicles (ex-8 wheelers?) shown above. I do have the Isinglass drawing (two sheet set) for the ones I'm after (which gives the info re the sets). Danny's coaches would be fine for the middle two or three but it's the end vehicles I'm struggling with at the moment. Sorry Dave - we've rather hijacked your thread for a moment. It's just such a gem of a picture!
RMweb Gold DaveF Posted March 21, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 21, 2013 I don't mind the hijacking at all - I'm learning a lot! As you may be realising Dad generally took photos of everything he saw, subject to the amount of film he could afford. I think there are around 1800 B/W images of his from this period, though quite a few are not good enough to post, so this could become a long thread unless you all get bored. coachmann
So much of interest comfiming much of what many railway historians know. Nice to see the latest coaches on the block (Thompsons) making up express passenger consists and the A3 carrying LNER apple green livery with an unmarked tender awaiting BR insignia or totem. The lowest shot in post #53 shows but one coach in blood & custard, the remainder being in LMS livery. Edited March 22, 2013 by coachmann

RMweb Gold The Fatadder Posted March 22, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 22, 2013 Some fascinating photos, thanks for sharing! stewartingram
So many shots of my home patch here - thanks. Cambridge South with the J39/D16/E4 - the railings on the left by the old Cattle Market. My lunchtime haunt when at school - just through the bridge on the left. The D15 crossing the River Cam - known better as Chesterton Junction Earlier shots at Trumpington with the school playing fieds on the right, look for the rugby goalposts. Ah, memories....! Sad to see it today though. Stewart
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted March 23, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 23, 2013 Thanks for sharing these Dave - from my point of view the locos and trains get in the way of the signalling but I can see others have different views - it shows how such photos can be lots of things to lots of men - keep 'em coming and please stop apologising for the quality, they are all superb.
Gruffalo
Thanks Dave. As a lad on the Isle of Wight late 50's and early 60's, I never had a camera to record those lazy scenes. Early 60's to the end of steam I was in the Bath area and, although I knew what we were losing, I still somehow never got to photograph railways around there at the time. I missed recording Bath Green Park, the Slow & Dirty and Kings & Castles on mainline GWR steam. I loved watching it all when I could sneak away and now, when I am trying to recreate miniature reflections, all past photographs help to add atmosphere. Beast's *62 comment is good, I am not a signaller nor an LNER / GC follower particularly but the track layouts of the time, platforms and structures all help get the feel for something very long gone. No apologies for the quality, you are taking time and trouble to share them and for that we thank you. Tony

pH
Dave, is that Ivatt class 2 not coming into Cambridge from the north end? - in which case would it not be a Kettering to Cambridge train? Great photographs with, as others have said, much more than the locomotives in the picture. Did your Dad take any at Histon? I lived there for 3 years, when the only trains running were those to Oakington (though we did go on an excursion from there to Yarmouth), and often wondered what it had been like when there was a full service. Many thanks, you are right, I misread Dad's notes (yet again). As yet I don't know if he got to Histon or other locations on the line - there are still over 1500 photos to sort out and match to his notes. Hi Ph The train is coming in from the north, it is just going over the sissors crossing half way down the platform. Normally the Kettering trains terminated in the north bay platform, this one seems to be ending its journey on the southern end of the main platform. Dave's dad must be standing in the yard.
