Tyneside electrics

Recommended Posts

Ive had a passing interest in the 3rd rail Tyneside electrics for a while and whenever ive noticed any interesting shots ive saved them, so ive started this thread for discussion of the system and its trains, including the dock locomotives. I know very little about the trains and the lines they worked on so im interested to learn about them.

to start off, a nice shot of a parcels unit at Newcastle central

EPBs on 'southern' lines, Gresleys on the northern loop (usually).

Superb phots by the way. I have a real soft spot for these electrics from my fleeting holiday visits in the late 50s and up to 1962.

There is a kit of the parcels unit available - Dave Alexander - and there has been an article somewhere in the past about converting a SR EPB to a Tyneside unit (lots of stuff to do to the roof and some work on the front).

Ive only ever seen one build of an ex LNER set in green, 4mm but not sure who it was.

parcel kit would be something nice to build but i best stop myself, I do however plan to model PLV E68000 as M68000m during its time on Merseyside, one of the reasons for my interest in the tyneside system. hoping to find some more photos of it.

edit, quick google, Alexander models does the kit of the LNER parcels unit.

The parcels unit is available from Dave Alexander (I don't think he has a website but is at most North East shows) - I can't recall if it's the LNER version or the original NER version though. Could you point me in the direction of the article on converting an EPB to a Tyneside unit? It's been a long-held ambition of mine to build a layout depicting a 'what-if' of the Collywell Bay branch being opened and the electrics surviving into the 1970s.

out of interest, and for other readers,  what is the Alexander models kit like?

what is it construced of? ie brass?

is it a difficult one?

price etc.

just trying to find where I seen someone who scratchbuilt an articulated unit, was on the web and it looked really nice.

These old Piullman units from the Boston MBTA Red Line have a lot of simularities to the old LNER Tyneside stock however they are not articulated. What a shame that one of the Tynside articulated sets was not preserved

I have fond memories of these units, travelling to Newcastle Central on my first trainspotting expeditions in the early 60s. From the Blyth & Tyne we had a choice of Met Camm Class 101 DMU to Manors then changing onto the electrics for one stop to Newcastle, or, DMU to Backworth and changing onto the electrics for a direct run into Newcastle.

Of course, they were totally derided by us then, we couldn't wait to arrive at Newcastle to see the 'new' Deltics and, of course, steam!

Happy days,

Mal

ps. Chris Pendleton's superb 'North Shields' was featured in issue no 58 of MRJ, a 29 page article with loads of pics

Some of my scratchbuilt Tyneside electrics. I build one of Dave's MetCamm parcels vans but can't find a photo of it at the moment, not a bad kit, bit heavy and the motor bogie mount is a bit weak, it's whitemetal and tends to sag!

Long trips wouldn't necessarily be in revenue earning service. Maybe they went on a jolly jaunt for testing when they were new, or after a major overhaul - or even for driver training?

It would be nice to see one hauling an excursion or a railtour - even if only in model form ;)
