Hello all,

I did say that Ivor would get brighter, and I think that he has, the next job is to throw some gloss varnish over him. Then the yellow lining, the buffers and the shiny bits. after that it's the transfers.

Hello all,

now I remember why I don't do paint work, if it can go wrong it will go wrong with me. Got the red and black on OK.

Then it started to go wrong,

1st, mixed up the varnish, spilt some on the work bench,

2nd, started to spray it, it came out like candy floss.

3rd, thinks that I'll bush paint it, that sort of worked,

4th, putting it back in to the spray booth, knocked it to the floor of the spray booth.

5th, picked it up off the paint booth floor, sh!t all over one side.

So it now looks like a complete strip down in cellulose thinners and a repaint. What else can go wrong? The resin casting melt, all of the lead shot comes out, burn the house down, fall down the stairs, etc. etc.

One p!!sed off

So sorry to hear this Ozzy - but tbh part of me is relieved to know that this kind of falling-at-the-last-fence varnishing nightmare also happens to people who know what they're doing, and not just to me.  I've been building a 16mm scale FR George England 0-4-0 STT - took me bl**dy hours to paint and line the tender with those intricate Ffestinog double-lined corners - final coat of varnish goes on and bang: exactly the same problems you've had today.  Makes you want to scream/weep/throw the model out of the workshop/kick the cat.  So maximum sympathy from me - these toy trains can be a right bu**er sometimes.

Hi Ozzyo,

Been there myself - lovely coach, fully finished and spilt a pot of black paint on it...

I think Homer said it best when he went D'oh!

You will no doubt pull it round - if I can, you certainly will!

All the best,

Castle

Hello all,

thanks for all of the words of support.

Ivor has now been striped as you will see in the following photos. I was a bit apprehensive about using cellulose thinners with the resin parts, but after a quick chat with Pete H. about them he reckoned that it would be OK. So in the bath he went, a nice green engine. He came out a nice dull brass.

Then it was a wash in Cilit Bang and a grit blast just to remove any last bits of paint. Then it was another wash in the ultrasonic cleaner just to get rid of any last bits. Then it was club time. So he was left to dry.

After getting back from the club (railway not drink type) I decided to apply some primer to him, so this is what he now looks like. With a bit of luck I'll get the top half done before I go to bed and then Ill be able to start applying the green tomorrow.

PS what else can go wrong?

Hello all,

before I went to bed last night I got the primer on to Ivor's top side, so that I could get the green on early this morning,

The last time I painted Ivor I did not mask off the front buffer beam, I decided to do that this time. Looking at some of the photos I may have a few thin spots in the green so once I'm off the puter I'll touch them in,

Is that's Coat 1?

!st coat, it had a few thin spots in some of the corners.

Looking good again.  That must be a great relief Ozzyo, especially the resin parts surviving the cellulose treatment.  There is a saying that goes along the line of "He who never made a mistake never made anything."  C#ck-ups are, I'm afraid, part of the territory when one is a practical modeller as opposed to the armchair variety.

I am interested in your references to your Grit Blaster; is it specifically for hobbyists as opposed to an industrial one?

The one I have is for small industries, I got it from Machine Mart a few years back. I would not be without it now. To help with size the drawing in the background in the first photo is A3 size.

The rule that you can see is 12" to give an idea of size.

I think that there is a thread about grit blasting and grit blasters on Rmweb.

That looks far more vivid this time.

Grief, that's bright........

I think that Ivor should be bright, this is the drawing that I've been working off for colours, just wait till I start on the lining!

It looks like I've missed just under the rim of the chimney again!

I reckon the colour is spot on. It's a shame the shiny brass bits on the "real" Ivor are resin parts on the kit (chimney and safety valve tops). They would've looked nice polished up.

See my workbench thread and the wrong way round J77 smokebox door...

Why when you want a job to be finished do things go wrong? It says on the can the paint will be dry in 3 hours. It's had all day on the radiator and it's still sticky, the house has been like an oven.

Maybe that's the next place to try? 3 hours at 80 deg.?

A nice roasted Ivor, tank anyone?

Hello Garry all,

all in all a good day out at Telford meeting up with Rmwebbers old and new, I was a bit surprised that I did not see Andy Y at the show.

Ivor is not ready so you did not miss him at the show.

I was at Leamington yesterday but I'll be at Telford today, probably gassing rather than doing anything useful.
