Level crossing stupidity...

BBC South reporting today on the issues with Poole High Street

Reasonable reporting until they reported asking why the train doesn't cross until minutes after the barriers come down

Network Rail response reported as because we have to allow time to ensure the crossing is clear

Granted its not an easy question to answer in a media friendly way but the response from NR simply doesn't sound like credible to the public.

Something more along the lines of "Trains cannot stop quickly, if we wait till the train has got right up to the crossing before lowering it then every train between Bournemouth and Poole will be delayed by 10minutes" is perhaps a better if less snappy answer.

I think what they meant Because we have to wait for the f.....g idiots to behave

Hi,

Level Crossing Strike in points, depend on the type of crossing;

Automatic Half Barriers (AHBs) have strike in points are based on the time it takes to display the road light sequence correctly and lower barriers plus enough time for someone to clear the crossing, these are often shorter waiting times than MCB crossings

Manually Controlled Barriers have strike in points based on ensuring the road light sequence is displayed correctly, lowering the barriers and proving the crossing is clear (either by signaller or obstacle detector) 10 seconds before the train reaches the AWS Magnet of the outer distant signal of the signal that protects the crossing. This is to ensure that  the train is given a green signal. Because of how far the distant could be from the crossing, this can create long waiting periods.

Both strike in points can be adjusted according to local conditions, shortening or lengthening the barrier down time.

37 seconds is the maximum time that must elapse between a train 'striking in' and it passing over the crossing for 85% of trains. If the figure of 85% cannot be met due to the presence of a station slowing trains from linespeed or due to large speed differentials (express passenger and bulk freight) then extra controls (such as stopping / non stopping signalling controls) must be applied to bring the figure back up to 85%.

For clarity this is for an AHBC..

Only problem with that is that it will probably be his insurance company who would foot the bill, therefore, we end up paying not him!

Not if it's a court imposed penalty.

apparently the tram service through oldham had to be suspended on friday night due to too many cars queuing for food due to eid celebrations obstructing the line at several points and it being considered to dangerous

66708 suffered minor damage to the guard which hangs off the bogies in front of the wheels, once this was resolved the train continued - at around 16:15, some 5 hours after the incident.

And to think they used to whinge about having to ride in a modified Freightliner container ;).

It'll take more than T-Cut and elbow grease to sort that out...

...I can't see his insurers being too impressed either

Especially with this..

"It was a lucky escape in that the train was already at the crossing."

An insurance claim along the lines of "I was proceeding along the road without incident until a stationary tree collided with me..."

The owner of the 'Bron Hebog' 009 layout posted on Facebook yesterday that he was thinking of buying a 4mm scale red Ford Puma....

Under the circumstances it might be more appropriate to 'scratch build' one
