24grange
Has anymore progress been made on Loftus Road? There hasn't been an update for months! Looking forward to seeing what's changed. Still has to be my favorite layout Same thing happened with Wells-Green TMD, all of a sudden no more updates. Shame
Harry Lime
Same thing happened with Wells-Green TMD, all of a sudden no more updates. Shame Dear 24Grange, I think that you will find that if you look at post 451, we (I) intimated that there is some work being done on Loftus Road by James (and other members of the club) and that there will be some pictures posted here for all to see when these are ready. Whilst we appreciate that news tends to travel faster in this digital age, time spent on modelling means that we are not always able to keep up with the desire for instant news. Therefore, a little patience and the willingness to read previous posts (even if they are two or three earlier than the latest one - and on the same page) may save some disappointment - as well as not haranguing James to post something. If this reply seems a little rude, please feel free to be slightly miffed. Only mild irritation registered when I read your post. Be thankful I answered first and not some of the other members of the Loftus Road team!
RMweb Premium James Makin Posted September 14, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted September 14, 2017 There are lots more updates coming, promise! As Chris mentions, it takes time both to do the modelling, and then the time taken to do the PR and update RMweb accordingly is often done in lieu of an evening's grabbed-time modelling - often it does seem simpler to actually just get on with the modelling and then just show the combined fruits of your labours every now and then! Not to mention also, Worthing MRC's Loftus Road is a club layout, and like many club layouts, it's often packed away for most of the year in favour of other layouts being worked on, so grabbing time when it's actually up and running are sometimes rare, hence why you'll normally get a flurry of activity in the run up & testing period before our shows, and then nothing for a while, often as we're all knackered and spending time working on our own respective 'home' projects! In the meantime, as a placeholder, I've got a shot of my new Class 58 running on Loftus Road, more details can be found on my Workbench thread (link in signature) - loads more updates there to plough through 58017 by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr We've got the layout up and running ready for Fareham show next month, and I've nearly finished a controversial new scenic addition, so keep the eyes peeled in the coming weeks...! Cheers, James
24grange
I wasn't criticising, but I just pointing out that everyone who follows this thread think loftus is a fantastic layout and( although I appreciate the reasons)was sad at missing recent updates, that's all.
batrapyr
I am one (of many?) who only post on RMWEB infrequently. Indeed there are times when the pressures of everyday life mean that I don't even get the opportunity to 'browse' through postings. However, when I do get time to flick through the latest posts, I am always delighted when I see that someone has posted something on 'Loftus Road'. I can certainly appreciate that other activities can preclude the posting of pictures of the latest developments on this wonderful layout. As an 'armchair' modeller (hopefully this is only temporary) I look to layouts, such as Loftus Road, for inspiration. I am deeply grateful for any updates that you manage to make available. I would really love to be able to see it 'in the flesh' but, so far, every outing has either been too far away or on a day when I am committed to doing something that can't be re-arranged. Please keep up the good work and I really look forward to the next batch of photos - whenever that might be. RMweb Premium Popular Post James Makin Posted September 24, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 24, 2017 We've just come back from our club show this year in Worthing, which went very well, but very knackered, not least our exhibition manager Chris ('Harry Lime' on RMWeb)...Loftus Road wasn't attending our show this year, but in the run up to the general club chaos, I managed to indulge in a nostalgic photo session last week... 4-VEP 3486 being towed by 66555 on Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr One of the very sad but interesting moments of the mid-2000s was seeing our old slam-door EMUs being towed away from their regular Southern metals on their final journeys to far flung destinations like Caerwent or Pigs Bay Shoeburyness for scrapping. This meant for probably the first time ever, you saw your regular commuter unit buffered up to an exotic freight locomotive from 'oop North'! As homage to this, I've butted up my Freightliner '66' to the 4-VEP - this in due course will be joined by more end-of-life EMUs to form a 12-car scrap set. I'll need to strip off the third rail shoe-gear and disconnect the gearing in the EMU power cars, but it'll definitely make for something a bit different! Scratchbuilt Electrostar 377207 by James Makin on Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr The 'new order' can be seen here - Southern's ADtranz-Bombardier Electrostar, in the form of my scratchbuilt Class 377/2. It's hard to believe but 377207 is itself about 13 years old now...crazy stuff! I still sell resin cabs for these units, but I'm amazed that Hornby or Bachmann haven't yet announced these in RTR. Scratchbuilt Electrostar 377207 by James Makin on Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Jumping the clock back further, how about a cheeky Virgin Cross Country service! 47736 and 47702 on Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr In the early years of privatisation, Virgin's own Class 47/8 fleet was notoriously unreliable, seeing all sorts deputising from the likes of 31s, to no-heat 37s and 47s in all colours, a sensational Birmingham 'Deltic' run and a certain red-stripe 56019 famously stepping in on a Reading trip back in the glory days! By the close of the decade, Virgin had largely got their act together, but still regularly hired in '47s' from EWS for failures and additional Summer Saturday cover - so it's appropriate we see my latest addition, 47736 Cambridge Traction & Rolling Stock Depot piloting failed 47702 County of Suffolk on Virgin's southbound 'Sussex Scot' service to Brighton. Ironically, despite the red livery, 47702 belongs to EWS in the first place... In the background can be seen one of my earliest 'proper' modelling jobs - an Airfix Mk2 coach micro-buffet conversion that I'd done back in 2003, the first time I'd completed an airbrush repaint job without it ending in a horrendous fingerprint-ridden messy disaster!! 47736 and 47702 Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr While we're in a retro mood, let's skip back to 1997 and Great Western Trains' 47846 Thor can be seen on a diverted Sleeper service through Loftus Road...that green has got to be one of the classiest liveries of the last 20 years, and stacks cooler than modern day "GWR" I reckon! 47846 on Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr And finally, no nostalgia trip could be complete without appearance of one of the much-loved Railfreight Distribution '47's - once abundant in a wide range of conditions, vulnerable with high engine hours, on their last legs and very much on Ed Burkhardt's hit-list! 47348 St Christopher's Railway Home works a South-bound MOD working through Loftus Road, with only about a year of active life ahead of it before storage following derailment damage in 2000. 47348 on Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr It's really not long now until our next show at Fareham on 7th & 8th October - please do come along - Worthing MRC's Loftus Road will be there along with the amazing Croydon North Street & Oak Road layouts, should be really good fun and plenty of banter! Other than the two I have upstairs (SS Great Britain from a vitrains and an unnamed example from a Heljan model) I don't think I've seen any high spec GWT 47s. Now what I really want is a current generation pair of power cars in GWT, I really must reconvert my GWT set (and my virgin xc one) from P4 back to OO so that I can play with it on Brent
RMweb Premium James Makin Posted September 25, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted September 25, 2017 Thanks very much Rich! Definitely a pair of Merlin HST power cars is called for, I've long had my rake of Merlin Mk3s ready, so just need to get on with the power cars, I've actually got some donors that have been laying around for a while (two will be Merlin, plus two others each in the different Barbie variations) - just need to get on with them basically!! RMweb Premium Popular Post James Makin Posted October 15, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted October 15, 2017 (edited) A week has passed since our most recent show at Fareham, so it's time to share a few images snatched during the weekend... Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr GBRf's 66741 Swanage Railway rumbles through Worthing MRC's Loftus Road with a Network Rail ballast working... Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr ...meanwhile later, 66113 is caught awaiting a clear road through the station on a Northbound coal working. Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr One of the best bits about the show was the big RMWeb layout presence - we were privileged to be cited next to the brand new Oak Road and behind the award-winning Croydon North Street, resulting in a weekend of banter and entertainment! Mike's Oak Road is an incredible layout, but also the first one we've seen that turns up to a show and proceeds to construct a fiddle yard, while open to the public, and not only that, but using borrowed track from a trader's stand!! The best part of course was the temptation to link our fiddle yards together - with both layouts sharing a smattering of First Great Western's dynamic lines... Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr It's way too new for my liking but you can't beat a bit of snazzy Colas taking to the rails - the modern day LoadHaul... Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr I couldn't resist adding something a little different to the layout, and my latest cameo is a road accident memorial scene on Loftus Road - Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Long-time readers may recall that we had a similar scene in the old formation of the layout - this disappeared under the scenery connecting to the new boards, so it was only right that it was re-instated! Inspired originally by a scene we saw on the way to the Ally Pally show in 2007, it can be seen across the country. I've made the flower bouquets from Blue Tak, while the Metropolitan Police witness boards are custom made using real examples for inspiration to get the format correct. I'm still working on the road detailing, it's portrayed as a very recent scene and there's still evidence of sand applied to the road to contain liquid spillage, a large quantity of broken glass in the gulley and a few home-made yellow triangular Police cones added for good measure. Next to follow are some delicate skid marks and Police spray markings from the collision investigation unit. The Police tape is painted, minty white dental floss! Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr One of my own guilty pleasures, EWS's 47467 in 1999 condition on it's very last legs prior to withdrawal - classic traction! Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr We've had some new stock debuting on Loftus Road recently, here's Mark Butcher's Flying Scotsman steaming through - looking very classy in BR Green. Although we're all D&E boys, quite a few of us will admit to owning a fair few steam locos amongst the diesels! Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Pete Hollman's 68014 brings the layout bang up to date, whilst below, Chris Sweeney's new acquisition in the form of 66709 takes to the rails... Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Overall, a cracking show and great to catch up with so many RMWebbers - now we look forward to the Canterbury show in January 2018! RMweb Gold Revolution Mike B Posted October 15, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 15, 2017 It was an absolute pleasure to be parked next to you guys at the Fareham show, along with Croydon North Street and if I'm honest, it made my weekend. Loftus Road has long been an inspiration to my modelling efforts and whilst us modern guys aren't always that popular with the crowds, it's great to see things that I can relate to at 51 years of age. My only regret is that we didn't build the flyover!
