15 years ago - so 2006 - who would have predicted:

  • retailers commissioning or dealing directly with China to get models made
  • Hornby/Bachmann/Heljan/Dapol being challenged by Rapido, Accurascale, Cavalex, KR Models, Revolution, Sonic and others.
  • a healthy - if limited by size of the trains - RTR 7mm/O market
  • almost every class of mainstream diesel loco being available RTR
  • oddballs like the Fell, GT3, ATP-E and others available RTR
  • the other side of the market, steam, pushing backwards from the big 4 into the previous companies

Anything is certainly possible in 15 years, but so far steam doesn't seem to be dead/dying even if it isn't as big as it once was - and my suspicion is that steam will always remain given the visual and other benefits it offers to those who model that era.

and who could of imagined that a manufacturer would shell out £1,000,000 on making a model train.  Which is what I understand Bachmann have shelled out to get their new class 47 into production!

It's an overcast day in the South Hams

For the sake of prototype authenticity, it is even more overcast in the South Hams today, with a light misty drizzle occasionally falling on and around Kernow Towers.

I am minded to do some more work on my next pannier.

You mean that you haven't got your own Tardis - every modern cars eems to come with enough gubbins to indicate they are able to do that as well :jester:

And in my defence, I only gave the closure day and month...not the year!

Now I'm spoiling you all as we see a rare glimpse of a West Country as 34066 Spitfire heads west on a stopping train using austerity brown clerestory stock.

Another typo or two fixed (Rob just needs to correct the photo now)

Seven years now since the diverted ACE with 34066 ran through Brent and a lot has changed on and off the layout.

Tooling up to make a typical Class 47 would probably cost no more than half of that, it's being able to make (almost) any specific Class 47 that Bachmann will have spent the rest on.

Hint hint...

81 years ago the skies above England were a battle ground, the 'Few' were not only downing bombers & fighters to protect our towns, ports and cities - but their aerodromes as well ;)

Regular readers will  remember the troubling incident a few weeks back of a 1366 getting a bit carried away and not listening to its elders and betters (the Beattie Well Tanks).

Well(!), having seen an influx of similar silly WR locos, it seems appropriate to keep them carefully corralled. So it is with great fanfare and much waving of flags I present 3 new Western Region Engine Restrictors:
