Is there a specific reason why the railcars did not work on the South Devon branches?

I would suggest a 45xx class prairie and B set would be more aesthetically pleasing.

Having never owned a Heljan model till recently I seem to have acquired a couple in the last fortnight....

Railcar No. 22 would never have been seen in South Devon and nice as it is , will probably be sold on in the near future.

Evening Robin,

You've flushed me out from my lurking state... :D

Some cracking snaps of late with recent releases from Heljan.

Regarding the railcar's future I'd be tempted to hang on to it. It's a stunning model and screams GWR.

Let TBG work his wonders on it and it will lift it to another level... ;)

I know when I visit the NRM in York I'm drawn to two exhibits. The GWR Streamlined railcar which is a wonderful piece of design in all its GWR glory and loveliness..

Out of interest the other exhibit is O.V Bullied's Q1. Not sure the brakes would have coped with those South Devon Banks mind.. :O

Of course the real excitement lies in the release of the forthcoming Accurascale 78xx Manor Class... ;) (and future 10xx Class County ;) ...)

Looking forwards to some more railcar snaps in the South Hams.. :D

Cheers,

Mark

I have a soft spot for the Kingsbridge branch as some of our favourite walks in Devon are along the trackbed around Loddiswell and Gara Bridge.  I asked the question about the GW railcars as a single BR unit was used in the last days of the branch whilst in the 1900’s a steam railmotor worked round trip from Saltash.  Maybe history could be manipulated so that in 1947 this service was operated by one of the GW diesel units?

I agree that a prairie such as 4561 hauling a B set would be very typical, but to my mind the most aesthetically pleasing locomotive to have worked through Brent was in the 44 number series.

Dear2750 Papyrus

I apologise if this question has been asked before  , but have you read that marvellous book “2750 the legend of a loco” .? It must be 60 years since I found it in the junior library and I remember bits of it still .

On here the other day I posted a pic of my 63XX when it was still 7310 and it didn't have the Lamps for its' appearance on WR Diversions.

So here is the 7311 version (Modelmaster Plates), with Modelu British Railways Lamps, to show they are pretty well to scale.

What I have yet to do is blank off that daft NEM hole and check the Fittings, Screw Coupling etc; sorry about that.

If anyone has 'improved' that not very nice Chimney, I'd appreciate any info along with other mods that are worthwhile. 7311 was an Exeter Engine at the time I require it (1960/61) and it did have external Steam Pipes from my investigations ( I really hope so anyway)?

SR Lamps wouldn't fit on WR Irons; thanks to Jon Dunsignalling.

Yes, like you I found it in the junior library when I was about 9, and it was a major contributor to my love of railways and my choice of pen-name.  It took me many years to source a copy through the specialist book-sellers but it has been recently reprinted as a paperback.

In 2017, a biography of the author was published, "Henry Charles Webster Man of Steam", by Dorrienne Roughley.  If you are interested in the life of a railwayman in the steam age this is "a good read" and the source of some of the stories in the earlier work.

You been Converterated to DCC yet?  I can't stand the suspenders and await the tales of Morphine induced tales of the unexpected (that is a new loco that actually arrives when it is supposed to).

County circa 1960 please with proper Stumpy DC.

Imagine trying to make one of those films today.

A few years back I was chatting to one of my work colleagues about 'Till Death Us Do Part'. One of our apprentices joined in the conversation and just didn't believe what we told him about the series. "It's on YouTube" we told him, "have a look..." Next day the poor lad came in absolutely gobsmaked and very much enlightened!

Hi Robin

As always, super photos.

If you sell the Heljan Railcar on you are stronger willed than I ! The furthest North they got was Stourport in the Midlands** but it really is a fine model…..lots of fun to operate so, not for the first time, Rule 1 has been invoked at Granby.

** Actually thats not quite true …..apparently, during the war, two of the railcars were loaned to the LNER and operated in the Newcastle area!

And there is a published photo somewhere or other of one at Harrogate during its wartime sojourn on the LNER.

I suspect that they weren't used in Devon because of the summer time need to add varying numbers of extra coaches behind them every time there was a sunny day or through coaches from London
