Yes, Up side at the west end of the station looking east.  The small prairie is in what one source calls the 'Up Sidings' and the brakevan is in the dock siding.

Thanks Mike I just wanted to confirm and, of course, 4555 was a local engine even then.

Hello Captain

Wednesday's post part repeated below...

Brian

Here’s what to do…

1 You may vote for any or all of the items listed plus suggestions at 13 (if you so wish).

2 They must be items you would realistically wish to buy if made RTR at ‘affordable prices’.

3 Submit your entries on this thread simply as (for example): 2, 4, 7 – with comments and explanations following. My posting which follows should serve as an example.

4 If you vote by PM, please only list your selection of numbers without explanations.

1  Banana Van (Diag.Y4 of 1922)

2  Fruit Van (Diag.Y3 of 1911)

3  Fruit Van – Fruit C, 22ft long (Diag.Y9 of 1937)

13 Your suggestions of vehicles not listed in the above groups

You may suggest one vehicle only in any or all of the four headings.

Catching this game late!

For me its 8-10 and 12 please :-)

I am sure there were fish at Henley in the 30's, but I doubt they were in dedicated wagons by the time they got to the end of the line....

I think the previous poll was TPO - thats a Yes!

Not sure what the previous ones were....

Sorry Robin, I have a note for my absence somewhere :-)

I'm fairly sure that any fish traffic coming onro the branch would have been in passenger brakevans as there wouldn't have been a vast amount of it even in the 1930s.  There were a couple of wholesale fishmongers in Reading for many years and I expect retailers in Henley would have got their supplies from them or possibly from a wholesaler in London.

I would think that any local commercial fishing in the Thames  - if there had ever been any - would have finished long before then and the town never had a fish market among its various specialist markets so I doubt there'd be any forwarded fish traffic either.   Never any TPOs either but at one time plenty of dining cars stashed away in the carriage sidings during the quieter times of the year.  And at one time, noting  your comment elsewhere, there was regular steam railmotor service between Reading and Henley.

Better get back to South Devon before Rob throws us off the thread

Results – GWR 00 Rolling Stock Mini-Poll No.4: Fruit, Fish, Milk & Meat

Hello everyone

Control advised that a 'Q' path had become available, so the Results are now running about 15 hours early. :)

Many thanks to the 23 voters who took part. The number of votes to each item is shown in the left hand column and Comments Received are appended on a PDF as usual.

Please note that the results reflect the views of those who voted here and may not necessarily reflect those of the wider modelling community.

As per the TPO results, these are pretty clear, too!

High Polling

17        Milk Tank Wagon – 6-wheel, twin tank (Diag.O41 of 1935 & Diag.O50 of 1940)

14        Milk Tank Wagon – 6-wheel, ladders/filler at one end (eg Diags.O57 of 1946 & O60 of 1950)

13        Milk Tank Truck – 6-wheel with Dyson Milk Road Trailer Load (eg Diags.O37, O48, O49, 1932-47)

13        Fruit Van – Fruit C, 22ft long (Diag.Y9 of 1937)

6          Banana Van (Diag.Y4 of 1922)

6          Fruit Van (Diag.Y3 of 1911

Low Polling

2          Fish Van (eg Diag.V13, later S2)

2          Fish Wagon – Tadpole 8-wheel (eg Diag.S2)

Your suggestions of vehicles not listed in the above groups

2          Tevan

1          More accurate version of the Fruit Van Bachmann do.

1          More accurate version of the Fruit Mex done by Dapol.

Matters Arising

There was a slight overlap between this and a future Mini-Poll. Three respondents noted a Cattle Wagon – that has been noted in the appropriate poll, as has the mention of a Cordon which will be in the Departmental Stock Mini-Poll.

Revised Schedule – Forthcoming GWR 00 Rolling Stock Mini-Poll No.5: Minks

As previewed, this will run to the revised schedule of opening tomorrow, Sunday 11 July, closing at midnight on Wednesday 14 July and Results on Thursday 15 July.

GWR 00 Rolling Stock Mini-Poll No.5: Minks

Hello everyone

Welcome to the fifth in our series of GWR 00 Rolling Stock Mini-Polls. I am running them here with my friends, John Lewis, Chris Knowles-Thomas and Ian Taylor on Rob’s behalf.

In order to generate some debate – and some ‘learning opportunities’ – please feel free to explain why you have chosen your selections. I copy all ‘Comments Received’ in order of receipt – but with names removed – and post them as a PDF with the Results.

Please note that we do not welcome comments that act as an excuse to start up the old chestnut of ‘kits vs RTR’!

Here’s what to do…

1 You may vote for any or all of the eight items listed plus a response to 9 (if you so wish).

GWR Mink Vans

1. ‘Iron Mink’ 16ft

2. Mink A. 16ft

3. Mink A. 17ft 6in

4. Mink B. 21ft. Non-ventilated

5. Mink C. 21ft. Ventilated

6. Mink D. 28ft 6in

7. Mink F. 36ft. Bogie

8. Mink G. 30ft

9. If there was only enough plastic available to make just one of the above, which should it be?

(Answer simply as 1 or 3 or 5 etc as usual).

Get your thinking caps on and get voting! I will acknowledge receipt of your vote via the ‘Thx’ tick box.

You have until midnight on Wednesday 14 July. However, I will stop earlier and advise if votes reach 50. I will present the results during the morning of Thursday 15 July.

I look forward to your selections and comments!

Brian

Hello everyone

Most of the Minks are a bit too early for me, but – I have to say – I cannot for the life of me understand why the Mink As at the very least haven’t been made RTR!

Those are all I’m actually voting for on this one, but that’s not to say that I wouldn’t buy any or all of the others if they were made. Many ended their working lives in Departmental Stock, so I’m sure I’d find a use for them!

I’m currently stood in a queue trying to bag some seats in a club to watch tonight’s game.

Thanks again Brian.

I’ll vote for 2 -8 inclusive with 3 as my preferred choice.

Are Coventry playing or something Rob, not seen much on the news about any other games?

Hello everyone

Can anyone tell me the destination of loaded Hopper Wagons from Helston in the late 50s/early 60s?

I posed the question without success on the Helston thread and I don't have any suitable books with that information. Perhaps it's in an Oakwood Publishing Helston Branch history?

Many thanks

Interesting challenge there Brian.  The siding was reportedly reinstated c.1958 and lasted only until 1963. according to Tony Cooke (who is usually punctilious in his research).  the stone that was loaded there would appear to have been serpentine. (presumably Lizardite of some description from that area?) but then the trail goes cold.

Some types of serpentine are a source of asbestos and it can contain elements with good insulation properties but equally the harder types are suitable for use as roadstone and even railway ballast (wrong sort of hoppers in the only photos I can find and in any case ballast came from a quarry at Menheniot).  I doubt there were sufficient quantities sent from there for processing into something else such as asbestos which suggests that it it was most likely used as something like road stone or fill - I think the nearest roadstone coaring plant was at Par but I don't know if it was operational at that time.
