A Nod To Brent - a friendly thread, filled with frivolity, cream teas and pasties. Longing for the happy days in the South Hams 1947.

Surely they indicate where the uncoupling magnets are installed!

As a newcomer to this thread just like to say how much I’m enjoying it.

Frank

A Nod to Bream?

All to scale though and everyfin in its rightful plaice. I can sea the Dorsal shut on the coach behind so Mike had better stop doing the conger and get his skates on if eel is to get the luggage loaded. Cod only knows where the day goes. He barely has time to hake a break. No good carping on about it though.

Rob

You’re getting to be a haddock with me - no - that’s pollocks

Best I can offer that is scanned.attachicon.gifBfrent 4944.jpgA bit early for your time frame but full of detailattachicon.gifbrent West.jpgMike Wiltshire

What an iconic picture, can any of you guys with encyclopaedic knowledge of things GW run through the identities of the two trains? Is the Express an early Saint? The goods engine must be a Dean, and the first three wagons have different brakes. Also the patina on the van next to the Toad is fascinating

Thanks for posting it Mike.

That photo appears on page 31 of "The Great Western in South Devon" book by Beck and Copsey (WSP) and the accompanying text is :

"An Up Ocean Mails express, behind an unidentified 'Saint' class engine, passing a short Down goods train in the charge of a Dean '2301' class 0-6-0 (probably the 'Pick-up') at the western approaches to Brent"

Guilty as charged. I’m delighted you like our Hungerford layout.

Unfortunately being based in Yorkshire I was unable to drum up enough interest amongst colleagues to build another GW layout to replace it. I’m now involved in building a model of a GN station local to where I live but I enjoy winding up my colleagues with a suggestion that the GN models I’m building are being built in the spirit of Swindon and may appear with copper cap chimneys.

Hopefully I will still find time to build an occassional GW model for Hungerford. I still have a couple of unbuilt Finney and Mitchell kits in the drawer.

Regards,

Frank

With all these fishy goings on, on A Cod to Bream.. a landing Craft is being prepared to transport the White Coat division of the Men in Malachite into Brent, for an emergency evaluation..  :jester:  :jester:

Would look nice on my layout.

But perhaps I'd better built one myself. There are three in my stash. Somewhere...
