Well back at the end of May a few seeds were sown and now it's come to fruition. Inspired by another Norman Lockett photo, we now have a Laira based Austerity in the shape of 77294. This was an eBay purchase and given to @toboldlygoto expertly renumber and weather. It also has the 247 etched trinket for the use of his fire irons fitted too. I need to get a driver from Modelu with his right hand on the regulator and apparently Alan can do mirror image figures using his GWR drivers. More tomorrow. brianusa
I loved these things, perhaps because of their difference and a non British look, despite their ancestry. Saw a few at Laira as we didn't get far in those days. Got an NE region ABC so I could underline them but there wasn't very many to be seen! Brian. 4 1
RMweb Gold Popular Post gwrrob Posted October 24, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted October 24, 2020 It's a filthy day outside but as promised we have a few more of 77294 on a down H class freight with an eclectic mix of vans heading to Tavistock Junction. Although the model dates back twenty years the wealth of detail is superb and has the usual weightiness of a Bachmann model, akin to my 9F workhorse. A splendid accompaniment to the LMS 8F purchased earlier this year.

You could always hear them coming before they clanked ponderously into view.A common sight on the South Wales main line from the 1940’s into the early 1960’s. To get the real WD feeling you do of course need sound. 5

RMweb Gold Ian Hargrave Posted October 24, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 24, 2020 That WD is really dressed for the job. I imagine the inmates of Dartmoor could hear her. At the very least, the noise would scare off the Hound. Great atmosphere. 5

brianusa
Did these actually have gold numbers on the front buffer beam ala GW? I only knew them in BR days. Brian.

I only knew them in BR days. Brian. The WD's did for the most part have buffer beam numbers, until they were renumbered (post 48 to 90xxx) and gained smoke-box number plates, but the font used on the buffer varied from what I can attain from photo's. They certainly didn't get the attention to detail (initially) when they went for major overhaul that even a Pannier would get and be ex-Works and come out pristine. Oh no they'd be cleaned were necessary and would get patch painted were repairs had been made. Irwell's The Book of WD 2-8-0s & 2-10-0s has a few good photos showing this. It's were I got my idea's from for weathering Rob's one. 1 3
RMweb Gold Popular Post gwrrob Posted October 25, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted October 25, 2020 A few leftovers featuring WD 77294 on the van train. As someone who struggles to remember what he did yesterday a post it note or two remind me what vans I've built recently before they're finished. Does anyone else find it annoying having to use a courier to deliver tinlets of paint nowadays. The likes of Precision want an arm or leg to deliver their products. 20

RMweb Gold 88C Posted October 25, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 25, 2020 Robin, have you tried Squires for paint, a minimum order for free postage but these days it doesn’t take much to reach it. Humbrol and Railmatch stocked. Brian 1

The fire iron rack certainly lifts your model to another level. Nice work all round. Good to see the new van builds as well. Out of interest is the Fruit D in the yard your modified Dapol model? With regards to paint it may be worth looking for a suitable Vallejo acrylic colour. Those more knowledgeable may know of a suitable colour With wagons and parcels vans these days I've tended to find a near match and not the specific railway paint. I remember that shade of Dapol plastic well... Nice work Robin on the Fruit D and it will be good to see it in GWR brown eventually.. I've used Tamiya German Grey on GWR stock and Tamiya NATO Brown for bauxite. Otherwise I've done a few home brews with Vallejo paints. Toboldlygo may be worth consulting for suitable matches using Vallejo colours... Cheers, Mark
