Peter Hazell, the local postie, is always a busy man but today he's a happy man. His trusty Morris Z van has finally received the Royal Mail branding.

 

With Oxford Diecast doing a huge range of vehicles this is something to my knowledge they don't do.

 

A big heads up to this transfer concern https://blacksquaredecals.co.uk/. Not familiar with them but found them via another thread on here. They specialise in transfers for old diecast vehicles that some of us had as youngsters, I know I did. I asked him if he did bespoke transfers that I could use on my old P D Marsh kit built years ago but still available.

He took a few dry runs to get the size correct for the raised part of the van but they do fit, just, as shewn here. A coat of matt varnish will hide the carrier film. Also shewn are the transfers that were in his range that he tweaked. ER has been changed to GR [V1] for our period.

Good but maybe not to Railtec standards although no one else does these decals to my knowledge.

Thats very nice Rob so I hesitate to mention it that he should have changed the crown to a kings crown..... but only people as old as I would ever notice. ........and there arent that many of us left!

That's my history lesson for today and does that mean when The Queen passes and Charles takes over all today's RM vans will need changing then.

 

The crown is barely noticeable at normal viewing distance on the model anyway.

My apologies Robin......I really didnt mean to pour cold water on an excellent idea and as you say it can hardly be seen at normal viewing distance.

 

The crown on all logos bearing Charles’s name should be different to his Mothers when  he succeeds. You could/can see Queen Victoria’s initials VR surmounted by a Queens crown on pillar boxes nearby would be a phone box with GVR and a King Crown (the arches are not depressed.)

 

Having said that it may be one of these traditions that dies out. I am in the Royal Vancouver Yacht...very hot on tradition and yet since 1953 we happily wear a queens crown on our blazer and still fly a burgee with the Kings crown.

I realise I didnt answer your question properly.

 

I suspect the changes to existing Royal Mail vehicles etc would be gradual... a bit like GWR logo changes.

 

The armed forces may be quicker. I joined the Army two years after the Coronation (I did say I was old!  ) to the best of my hazy memory,badges of rank that included a crown ..Colonels,Majors, Warrant Officers etc (Generals as well but I never got close enough to them to check) were all Queens crowns even though some of them must have held that rank in the previous reign.

Railtec can be finicky with certain paints. you need a decal setting solution to make the carrier film sit properly over the lumps and bumps

A beautifully restored example, obviously someone’s pride and joy. I seem to remember the London ones, at least, had rubber front wings which would make the finish matt. Similar to the colour of the rear mudguards in this picture.

Not trivial at all John IMO. The Royal Cipher, as you say, changes for each monarch (noting that King George V's cipher was just GR with no V) so the next, who may or may not take the name Charles, will have a new one. Note also that in Scotland the Royal Cipher carries the Scots Crown not the English Crown.

I thought I might choose this moment to return to ANTB after the best part of a year battling the "Black Dog" (Aspergers and Rheumy Arth related) as the "lockdown" seems to have put the "Dog" back in his kennel and I can use my hands and fingers as normal instead of feeling like I'm wearing a pair of wicket keeping gloves (swollen fingers and wrists).

 

So I made a start on something, and although 95% of the work so far is baseboard, track and electrical work, I did have an all day 8 hour "play" opening boxes, plonking stuff down and using blue tack to produce a pastiche montage, it's more Newton Abbot on steroids than the long term somewhere in the sleepy South Hams interchange junction planned.

 

 

To get back on topic ....re Devon vehicle registrations CO, DR,DV, FJ, JY, OD, TA, TT and UO are suitable second and third registration letters for Devon, Exeter and Plymouth and seem to accord with some of my Devon General and Western National bus fleet reg.nos.

Even in the 70s some chaps in REME would acquire old cap badges with the Kings Crown. Most the time they would be ignored but every now and then a sergeant-major would spot one, stating the king had been long dead before the wearer was born. Oddly it was always "My father's cap badge when he was in REME, sir", so the sergeant-major would politely ask them to parade the next day with a new cap badge.
