treggyman
Bill, most of my original pics are now back up here: http://ukrailwaypics.smugmug.com/UKRailwayPics-2/Wessex-Trains/Wessex-Trains-class-150/ Hi What a fantastic set of pictures......Now sadly all history.... Would you have any objection if I were to use them to do some Decals for myself..... Also.....Transfers....I bought some inkjet transfer/decal paper from I think Crafty Computer Co a few years ago & have had mixed results recently.....Whether the paper has 'Gone Off' or not I don't know but it doesn't seem to 'stick' any more..... & also what colour precision paint was it...... Thanks in anticipation Cheers Bill
Melangoose
Hi The paint used was P262 Northern Spirit Purple for the body and a mix of P262 and white for the lilac doors. I Did try the craft transfer paper as I know various modellers have used this method in the past. Unfortunately I didn't get on to well with it (maybe because the transfer had to cover the full height of the body - found they would start to stretch and when you had cut the transfer to go around the windows and then found out it was a good fit on one window but not the other - No Good). The Matt Vinyl (they are very thin) was recommended by David Lund (bmthtrains) he had done various liveries this way on his Ring Road layout. The Vinyl has been varnished with 2 coats, the only concern is will this last the sands of time. Hope this helps, good luck if you decide to have a go (it took me 6 months on and off, but I am well made up with the result) Nigel
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted January 21, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 21, 2014 You'll have to make a cassette to minimise handling. I've made one out of large plastic electrical conduit that works well for HOm and should be able to find some wide enough for OO too.

Your use of Matt Vinyl is not something I've come across before but sounds very interesting.... I googled bmthtrains but just got Bournemouth train times.....Is there a shop/site that it can be purchased from..... Apologies for going off track in this great thread thread but it sounds an interesting method of producing unique liveries.... Cheers Bill

Melangoose
Hi Guys Couple of pics of loco arrivals at Melangoose, with the arrival of the Class 150 in Wessex Trains livery we have moved the timescale to 2000 - 2003 47843 Vulcan ex Virgin livery but now a Freightliner loco. By 2003 Cement traffic was handled by Freightliner (Heavyhaul) Fact - On Wednesday the 12th November 2003 47843 hauled the Cement train to Moorswater (Fiction - it then carried out a trip working to Melangoose). 66546, in 2003 would have been a few months old, hence not much in the way of weathering. 60017 Shrotton Works Centenary Just to show you that just as we have some new traction that we are not forgetting about the staple diet 37708 on an Engineers train Nigel

Grimleygrid
What a lovely layout, whilst I prefer the 80s stock as that is my era, the modern stock really suits Melangoose as well. 37708 looks superb!

Melangoose
Hi Folks Getting Melangoose ready for a trip to the Nottingham / East Midlands Model Railway Exhibition this coming weekend. Any Rmweb members attending please come and say hello. a Wessex Trains Class 150 awaits the road for a return trip to Par, 66166 has just return from the maintenance depot at Leaford where some electrical rewiring has just taken place (thanks to the Hampshire Hog). The loco is a renumbered first generation Bachmann EWS Class 66 (ex 66135), I have 2 of these and they both failed during the Southampton Exhibition, the removal of the capacitors has made a huge difference no more jerky starts. Due to the Seawall collapse at Dawlish, the JIA Bulk Clay wagons are unable to return back to Cornwall. There is currently 21 in a siding at Exeter Yard Regards Nigel
stivesnick
Saw layout at Nottingham today - excellent layout, with good detail, and unlike many layouts at the show, something moving! Regards St Ives Nick
RMweb Gold griffgriff Posted March 15, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 15, 2014 I agree. It looked very impressive today. I particularly thought your stock storage solution was brilliant. Loads of stock in the minimum of space

RMweb Premium Steve Purves Posted March 19, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 19, 2014 Saw the layout on saturday at Nottingham, Was very impressed. I didnt get much time to look at layouts because son number 2 was grumpy and I was grumpy for having to carry son number 2 and associated pushchair up and downs stairs every 10 yards. S--- poo poo venue, good layouts (for what I saw of them)
Melangoose
Hi Guys The weekend before last I was asked by a Manager at Southwest Trains (my employer) to bring Melangoose to an open day at Salisbury station (this event was for the Stars Appeal charity which is for the child support unit at Salisbury Hospital), so I couldn't say no. Now when we did a charity event before at Salisbury station we ran a Southwest Trains class 158 (I now the layout is based in Cornwall), but we ran this to please the kids as the real 158's and 159's rolled past. The problem is that the platform on Melangoose is a bit tight for a Bachmann Class 158. So out of some plasticard I made a platform extension, just to add a couple of inches and save my blushes if I got it wrong. When we attend exhibitions, I try to keep Melangoose as prototypical as possible (Wessex Trains Class 150 & 153, EWS Class 08, 37 & 66 and Freightliner Class 66 are the norm and we occasionally run an EWS Class 60 or Freightliner Class 47). Now my Dad, "Dennis" ("Jim" for short) and my son "James" have been saying over the last few months about running a Steam Special (my dad has fond memories of the Steam Special on Kevin Broadhurst's Leaway Park back in the 1990's) Dad and James So with the Salisbury Station event in mind I said that a Steam Loco and a couple of coaches could run on Melangoose. Dad had a 4MT tank so a sound chip was installed by H-Hog sounds of Andover, now I have seen/heard sound locos before, but this loco with the way it has been set up is the best I have seen (total professional job) as the pistons move the beat of the chuff is at the same place - totally amazing bit of kit. Last month Temeraire, Pitbull, Paul RHB, Hampshire Hog and myself set off to ride on the Saturdays only First Great Western additional Loco Hauled train from Par to Exeter Pendennis Castle seen by myself at Exeter St David's at the end of July sadly our trip did not go to plan as the Loco Hauled train was cancelled but ran from Plymouth with a Class 150, so we moved onto Dawlish to walk the remains of Brunel's sea wall Also in August my family had a day trip to Swindon to visit the retail outlet situated in the remains of the old Swindon works, good for the railway enthusiast as there is a Hornby store in the outlet and the Steam Museum next door. Very impressed with the Steam Museum, in my mind I enjoyed it more than the NRM at York Dad its time to go !!!!!!! Next month sees Melangoose at the Wilmington Model Railway Exhibition on the 11th and 12th Regards Nigel Edited September 8, 2014 by Melangoose
treggyman
Hi Nigel Great set of pictures...... I would really like to see Melangoose one day....... It looks really good....... As regards 159's in Cornwall.....They did run...... Used to run down on a Saturday evening passing Redruth at about 8pm en route to Penzance, where they were stabled in the station overnight, returning to Waterloo passing Redruth around 2pm on the Sunday...... A couple of pics taken between Camborne & Redruth......The first one shows Redruth in the background with an old Stack visible above the bridge.......The third one has South Crofty mine in the background..... So perhaps a shortage of stock South west trains persuaded to lend a train & crew or even a special charter of the unit..... I'm sure a reason could be made up !!!! It was good to meet up with you in July and at least you saw the '57 & day coaches then even though your later trip was in vain to grab a ride on it......I had a similar problem in June !!!!!!!
Melangoose
Hi Guys Thanks to Bill for the post above, some fantastic pictures of SWT 159's in Cornwall. I remember these services west of Exeter well, the Penzance service was crewed west of St David's by FGW staff. But we (SWT staff) worked the trains to Paignton and Plymouth. The Paignton trip was the best as the Guard had to lower the crossing after the station to get into Goodrington Sidings. I remember being there on a Summer Saturday alongside an FGW Pacer talking to the FGW crew, I remarked that in the sidings at Goodrington the trackside signs were on huge bits of funny shaped metal (instead of the usual tubular poles), "that's old broad gauge track the reply came back from the elderly driver - wow. So parts of IKB's legacy still survive on the modern day railway. Sadly services west of Exeter ceased on 12 December 2009, but I was luckily enough to be crewing the early service to Paignton on the last day of operation. 159013 at Paignton on the 12th December 2009 Southwest Trains do lend First Great Western a Class 158 and a Class 159 on a daily basis, this means that they came pop up unexpected anywhere on the western. 159107 seen at Filton Abbey Wood working an extra service to Castle Cary (for the Glastonbury Festival) I have a class 08 and 09 (both Hornby) and they have not featured much on Melangoose as they both had a bad habit of stalling on the baseboard joint (very embarrassing when at exhibitions), the 09 was modified by Hampshire Hog, by being permanently coupled to a brake van with extra pick ups so that sorted out one of them. in the Summer we changed the DCC system from the Bachmann EZ command to an NCE Power Cab, and the funny thing is the 08 now runs perfectly (has never stalled to date). Funny that. We are "Out and About" this weekend as Melangoose will be at the Wilmington Model Railway Exhibition, this is an charity fund raising event organised by Rev Richard Arding. So it will be nice to be there and give the trains a run and spend some time with Dad. Melangoose is scheduled to attend Stafford at the end of Jan 2015, Brokenhurst in May 2015, and Cheltenham in Apr 2016 and Weymouth in Nov 2016. Bill I know that you being in Cornwall and that you would like to see Melangoose but we have nothing booked in your area, if you know any friendly exhibition managers in your area, we are open to future invites.
