Kintbury Jon's Layout

Here we go on a clockwise circular tour of my layout.

The layout is essentially 4 loops with various sidings coming off them. The 2 main lines run for the majority around the edge of the layout except at 'Kintbury'. The 2 nearside lines rise up and over the 2 main lines and come back down. There are two spurs off the inside line that have terminus platforms giving the option of a end to end service (units only as there are no run round facilities.

Emphasis is on 'running trains' and therefore everything is loosely based on places and no real research has been done! I have tried to place a few trains in the picture to give you an idea of the stuff I like.

Starting off with the parcels area. Seemed like a good use of space. In it, you can see (left to right) 47476, 47588 and 47465

Round the corner you can see the carriage sidings.

A view of the main station. 56032 is on the metals, 58041 on the MGR's, 47500 on a GW Intercity, 33114 on the West of England rake, 37035 on the Seacows, 33004 on a blue/grey rake, and on the right, Robert's (my 5 year old son) 57301 on a Virgin rake.

A view of the far end with a small stabling point (dumping ground!) 33207 and 37507 await.

Round the corner...

The junction area where the 2 nearside lines ascend with a spur off to a terminus. This is the start of a section of ballasting I have done. Robert's freight siding is on the right.

Round the next corner where the spur ends at a single platform.

Looking frm the other angle, 153303 awaits its next service. Robert has named it Looe after our holiday in cornwall. He enjoyed his 153 down there!

At this point, the raised lines cross over to the back. 31201 passes 60009. Both engines have been renumbered and resectored (from 31130 and 60066)

165121 waits at Kintbury whilst 166202 arrives. This area needs a lot of work!

An overview of the section. I have most of the buildings that I want in primer. Many of them are Airfix kits that my dad made in the 70's!

Moving on round (spot the RMWeb mug!)

Looking back to the other spur off the raised lines. A 158 waits in the platform with class 108 B964 sat in the stabling road. The lower level shows the DMU stabling point with L120,L127,L840,55992 and 159001.

Looking the other way 56049 and 47010 stand at the end of the depot area.

And finally a view of the main dumping ground, the depot. The hand of god moves in here at regular intervals.

Left road back to front, 50031, 37414, 33118, 47298, 33008, next row, 37888, 47620, 33201, 08800, then, 73209, 73128, 58048, then 47831, 37???, 50007, 73126, 50004,then 09012, 20??? (63 or 217!), 50027. Roberts 57008 is lurking at the back.

It's too cold to be in the loft at the moment so i've brought some things to do downstairs in the warmth. My dad passed on to me some old Hornby Dublo crescent signals and some Airfix buildings that all required some sorting out.

I quite like the look of the crescent signals and whilst I may in the future install colour light signals around the layout I thought I would use these to start with. I have some old Hornby Dublo Colour light signals that I will use in the main station, so the semaphores will be used in all the other areas. Some have lost their manual switches so these will go on the running lines where they can be permanently set to clear. The posts have required a repaint and I think they have scrubbed up rather nicely!

The kits are very old but worth using. Whilst there is some satisfaction in painting them, I am starting to wonder whether I should have taken the easy option of Hornby Skaledale! All these buildings will be for the scenic 'Kintbury' section.

  • 2 years later...

  • 5 years later...

Very little in 6 years i'm afraid.

The layout is still there and is used.  The main change is that the inside branch line is now DCC so that I can run sound stock.  I have a few British Sound fitted items as well as some HO French items. I have got to the stage where the actual detailing of the layout is not important to me and all I am interested in is running stuff.

A lot of stock has changed with the Turbos no more but more SR based units.  I'll try and put some photos up when I have some time.

Nowt wrong with that. It’s all about enjoying where you are.

Paul.
