Kits from Somerset
The question is as it says on the tin (Topic Title) the Russell part one book shows the 10'0" and the 8'6" both with 4'6" springs but both Blacksmith and Slaters have 4'0" springs for the 8'6" bogies. Has anybody ever checked some of the survives (both wheel bases should be on the South Devon Railway) and the 8'6" at Didcot.
Miss Prism
In case he hasn't read this thread, suggest send a PM to Castle, who will no doubt be able to help on the Didcot front.
Castle
Hi All, No problem - let me know which coaches to go and measure for you and we can post it up later in the week! Coach bogie design is not a strong point of mine... I presume the measurement you want is the of centres of the end pivots? The coach collection is here: http://www.didcotrailwaycentre.org.uk/guide/coaches.html All the best, Castle
Adrian Wintle
933, 1357, 1941 - all should be on the same type of bogie (Dean 8'6"). He needs the length of the spring which, as you say, should be between the pivots. Adrian
Kits from Somerset
Yes please Castle. I had not had time to check the most likely bogies these coaches should have. As it has been said above please can you measure from the centre of the spring pin to the next one and there is a very good chance it will be 4'6" (1321 mm) between them. Il Grifone
There is a General Arrangement Drawing of a suspension bogie in Russell's book IIRC, I'll check and see. There should be a slight difference between the springs, as they were deliberately mismatched to avoid them having the same resonant frequency. EDIT From the above book, the report presented by GJC himself himself mentions 4' 6" in several places. The drawings are printed too small for my eyes to be certain, but appear to specify 4' 6" between hanger centres. The differences in the springs are probably in thickness or length of the lower leaves rather than overall length?
billbedford
I suspect the kit producers have reduced the length of the spring to allow their model to go round normal layout curves.
Dazzler Fan
Michael Harris, "Great Western Coaches 1890-1954" has information and basic line drawings of bogies; but nothing definitive about spring lengths.
Castle
Hi All, I can confirm the measurement of 4' 6" for the spring centres. All the best, Castle
Kits from Somerset
Thank you for that so I will have to use the ones for the Blacksmith 10' bogies as these are the correct length.
billbedford
Then I hope you have 6' curves on your layout as on any smaller curves the springs will foul the scroll irons.
